Sounds like Kelly is shifting quite a few guys around.

Riddick will return kicks along with a freshman (possibly Daniels). Riddick will also return punts.

Heggie now an OL

Matthias Farley now a WR

Atkinson III will audition at RB

Eilar Hardy a FS, not CB

(btw, I cut and pasted the above from a poster on another site.)

I was going to do the exact same thing. Quick one you are.

I am surprised Bennett Jackson wasn't a choice for one of the kick return players.

The most important change to me if I were a perspective athlete would be Heggie. That would tell me the coaching staff is looking for the most from everybody.

Think of Golson to Farley. When that gets cookin' I doubt anyone in the country will be able to stop it. Mark my words.

Overal, the attention to detail that these moves, at this time of year shows is absolutely phenomenal. Think of it, when have the Irish seen this (since Ara's first year.)

heggie's move was inevitable...Hardy has the potential to start out at safety and move to corner if need be, but the move to safety definitely puts him in the realm of possibly playing right away this year.

Wasn't Hardy told he would probably start at safety last year when they picked up Atkinson and Brown?

Also. Isn't there another thread about this from like last month?

I think we all thought Hardy was going to safety.

I am a little suprised they are keeping Theo back to return kicks. I guess with GAIII moving to RB they figure they have to worry less about him not beeing available for RB depth.

The only new change was Heggie to the OL. Hopefully this opens a new opportunity for him. He was buried beneath all the stud DEs we have now but you have to love his work ethic and motor. I want to see him pull on some RB sweeps and let him cream some helpless LB or CB.

if harrell could be our next center at 6'5" i'd say he's got a shot...personally i think hanratty will be a center and if i remember right i think i remember reading something about that.

if he's only 270 that probably means he will take part in the offseason nutrition program to gain weight...prolly better to put on weight than take it off.

How heavy would Heggie huck wood if Heggie could huck wood?

270 pounds

man, i was thinking the same thing! lol! thanks, for the info on his weight...as far as being too tall i dont think it matters as much(being a tall center that is) when you are in the gun most of the time.

Don't think 6'5 over 6'3" makes much of a difference, except BK's staff do like offensive linemen long. Centers need to be particularly moblie, and as I remember Heggie was capable of moving. if Bruce can put on the muscle and not lose the speed . . .

Bruce Heggie

Bruce Heggie

BRUCE HEGGIE was 1st team All County (Central Florida) Offensive Line/Tight End
in his senior year. Also all State Academic All Star.

He is big and getting bigger and he can move. Putting him on offence may be a very good
decision-----he has 4 years of eligibility and a year of scout team experience on defense.
He is a smart, hard-nosed guy, but caught up in the Defensive End explosion of 2010.

Regarding Heggie at center: if so, he would, on first crude glance, be "tall". Outstanding centers average about 6'3" [see NFL rosters]. Weight-wise, there would not, ultimately be a difficulty as centers tend to be lighter --- many if not most are still [slightly] under 300lbs, and at least a half-dozen of the top college centers are/were in the 280s. Heggie is about there already. The Texas A&M center was, I believe listed as 281.

On the issue of "tall" however, Heggie would be going a bit against the grain. No outstanding college center was over 6'5", although about a handful were that height. The physics of this you know: center-of-gravity=ease of leverage. Depending on Heggie's actual build, however, his height measurement may be only a crude estimate of center of gravity. All people are not cut top vs bottom like a Greek sculpture. Some are, as Howie Long described himself, "bridge trolls" [long tops and short legs]. Long was a great example as to how that build could get low and still be very powerful with the extended top lever. Whether Heggie is a "bridge troll" or not, I don't know.

My guess is that the staff realizes that the Lombard/Nichols class still has a lot of catching up to do as far as O-line numbers are concerned, and that they will see if Bruce can grow into some help somewhere. My wild, untutored guess would be tackle rather than center [height] or guard [weight/mass]. If he's strong enough, he could max-out his superior agility and attitude there. If, however, we're getting away from the recent trend towards massive guards vs mobile tackles, then maybe guard is the place afterall.

Nice explanation Mike.

Thats kinda where I was was coming from with my question about his height. I guess I always think of the "bridge troll" body style when I think of centers. I dont know how many times we will play against 3-4's, but I know that a lot of the D's we play dont line a NT over the center (ie 4-3's) and he will be in pass protection most of the time. So that will probably mitigate any issues with his height.

I could be wrong here but if he plays tackle, which I assume he will, then shouldn't he be in the 270-280 range because I thought in the spread you want your tackles to be tall, lean, and mobile

To give credit where credit is due (and this is no slight to Wooley...thanks for posting), Ironman PM'd me early this week stating that these moves would happen (the news began trickling in later in the week), but he didn't want to go public yet just in case he got bad info. Well done Ironboy, errrrrr, Ironman (you've earned the 'man' moniker LOL)...

I would say more like 290-300 but it can vary by individual. Some people are still really mobile at 310.

All very interesting and informative, but I must say I'm a tad disappointed ...

When I saw the thread title I thought this was going to be a spirited discussion of the Kama Sutra ...

dshans role-played in the Kama Sutra at 6'6" 290lbs in the center position, so this is all possible.

Sorry Ironman, I just saw it on another site and wanted to share some info. Didn't mean to steal your thunder, dude.

Kinda funny that I joked about it though. I really didn't know that you were planning on sharing it, I wouldn't of posted it if I did.
