That's honestly one of the more practical solutions people float around... to completely separate "big time" football from everything else. There would be about 40-60 that could afford it. Notre Dame would likely stay out of it... as would most academics-first places like Stanford, Vandy, Northwestern. In general, there has been a lot of support to separate football from Title IX requirements for some years now.

I, personnally, think the most practical solution is to simply sanction things this way:
1. Allow for a couple thousand dollars in "living expenses" to cover full cost of attendance. Some cash in pocket would go a really long way to some guys.
2. Force EA or whoever to pay athletes whom they want to use their likeness, cover photo, etc... this is just a no brainer. Therefor, if EA sees 'value added' in your likeness, you'll get paid... or you won't be used. One or the other. Problem solved. Right now it's just weird how a 3rd party can use someone like that without paying them. You would never see that with, say, Kobe Bryant.

-So now we're stuck with garbage football games because of your plan...thanks. HAHAH! EA will just find a way around it.

What "living" expenses do they need? Money for an Escalade? Xbox? New iPhone?? Come on. You have everything you need when you're on a college campus and an athlete...you know that. Work during the offseason and save your money you earn. Simple.

The only way to fiscally make this work would be to provide higher pay to the sports with the Best ROI. This would totally kill title 9 thus won't happen.

I'm just saying that for some guys they don't even have the money to travel to and from school among other things. That is where a lot of the pressure to take money comes from and also why a lot of guys are sometimes forced to stay close to home or go to a school they don't want.

A perfect example is a kid (name escapes me right now) who was a foster child.. he wanted to go to Auburn but his adoptive parents really pushed him to Florida. He hated Florida and decided to transfer. His parents kicked him out of the house leaving him homeless; with no money and no job... and having to pay his way at Auburn for a year because he was transferring in conference. Luckily, his old high school coach took him in and helped him land on his feet... but for a guy like this an extra $5k or so to cover travel/living/laundry can go a long way for someone who doesn't have a support structure on the home front.

Just my humble opinion though... and this is a very debatable subject because it is a very gray area where you would draw the line.

That is because people realize that FBS football is little more than minor league football. If you rule over athletes too harshly, some billionaire may come along and pay them legally to play on his minor league team.

Wisdom from the almighty Lou:

Holtz also is adamantly opposed to South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier’s recent suggestion of paying college football players a stipend per game. Holtz said very few college players make it to the pros, and a four-year scholarship is a more than fair trade-off

“When you start paying a [college] athlete, that is absolute nonsense,” Holtz said. “ … Come here because you want to get an education, want to be part of our university and want to graduate. If you don’t, like my grandma used to say: ‘p!ss on you.’ ”

You should not miss your entire final season for having lunch with someone. That is bull****.

No one can lose a season simply for having lunch with someone. They might lose a season for knowing that they cannot have lunch with someone, and doing it anyways. People (not saying you, or anyone in particular) are constantly complaining that College Athletics is corrupted beyond repair. They scream for individuals Universities to hold athletes accountable to the established standards of behavior. Then, when a University, or the NCAA, says to a kid, "You knew that you were not allowed to accept that benefit from "Booster A", but you did it anyway. Now, you have to be accountable and face the consequences.", people raise holy hell about the NCAA "exploiting" athletes.

Keep in mind; the punishment is generally based not just on the actual violation, but the circumstances surrounding whether or not it was an honest mistake, or an intentional act designed to "game" the system.
