So my girlfriend and her family came over to my place for dinner tonight. Her 7 year old brother wanted to get on the computer so she told him the password to get on her profile. When I setup her profile on the computer I put her as an administrator also. Well he gets on the computer and deletes my profile. Luckily the school years over cause everything on there is gone. But now I have to redownload over 1,000 songs, tons of movies/shows and a boat load of other stuff. So yeah not happy. Just needed to type out my frustration. Lol

I realize my gallows humor doesn't help get the data back. I'd try a local computer repair place to see if they can rescue all or some of your stuff. They've got to be cheaper than recollecting it all.

It made me laugh.

I'm not sure what he did, but I got some music and movies back. Now I can't get yahoo messenger to redownload. I'll get back at it tomorrow when I'm less tired and irratated

re. External hard drive

Anyone know if the external hard drive can be hooked up to the TV to view movie collection?

That sucks. I would refinement take your computer to the shop. I'm sure they could square you away and get those lost files back.

I know this won't help your situation, but I have to ask: is this kid some kind computer whiz kid? It seems difficult to accidentally delete someone's profile. Do you think he knew what he was doing? And if so, am I mistaken in my belief that that is pretty impressive for a seven year old, in a strange way?

Data Recovery Software Products - Runtime Software Products - Get Data Back for NTFS

^This is verified as working good. I have used it at work, and in personal bidness. I know it works. you can even recover files after a drive has been formatted.

That being said, as someone suggested, investing in a external HDD would be a good solution looking forward. You can get a 2TB HDD nowadays relatively cheap, if you need more storage check out a Drobo. I have a local domain, where all user files from any computer in my house are saved on a local server, but an external HDD will give you the same redunduncy.

I agree with TDHeysus; that should work. Remember, though, the more you use the computer before trying to recover, the fewer items are going to be retrievable.

I have had whole partitions wiped out and able to get my stuff back. PR (Partition Recovery) is a great tool.

For whole computer online backup I would suggest: Easiest Online Backup Service - Backblaze $5/month (or cheaper if you pay in advance) for unlimited storage.

Pictures: Photo Sharing. Your Photos Look Better Here. $55/year nets you a pro account, unlimited storage of pictures and videos (Ask me for a referral, we both get $$ off our subscriptions)

General backups, use Amazon or Microsoft has 25GB of cloud storage for free at SkyDrive.

I avoid External HDs and DVD backups, because they are not infallible. In the event of a fire or house loss, you lose all that as well.

You should always create a guest profile for this type of situation. Also, if you bought music you wouldn't have to re-download, now would you (bitter former record label employee rant).
