Anarin, do you remember the horror that was the 2007 GT game? It was a bloodbath for DJ and only for the reason that Weis didn't want to get Jimmy slaughtered in week one of his freshman year. Sacrificial lamb is exactly the correct term.

As far as Kiel goes, I've heard no news from my cousins in Columbus who are close with Gunner's brothers. He's been pretty quiet about ND lately, but they (cousins) did tell me that Stevie Brown (DB) and former Columbus East football player under Carr & RichRod for 1 year has spoken a bit to Gunner about how he enjoyed Michigan outside the football program. Stevie Brown was a genuine STUD at East and Gunner would have been in 7th or 8th grade at the time and kids worshiped him. Gunner certainly won't take Stevie's word as the be all-end all, but its another voice not working in our favor, for sure.

unfortunately so... I'd rather erase that season from memory haha

Where he couldn't beat out Tony Pike. Is that really that disgraceful? I am by no means saying that Demitrius Jones would have been good, but we never really got to find out either.

He also transferred to central state university (FCS or DII for you old timers) and still couldnt crack the starting QB job, he became a wideout and a tight end. I mean I get what you are saying that he never had a fair shake, but he wasnt good dude... the quicker you accept it, the better off you'll be =)

FWIW, a poster on II who lives in Columbus and has personal sources in the school at East has stated that Kiel will make his choice June 1.

Demetrious Jones played LB at Cincinnati. Central State is in Ohio and actually produced some good football players before the program went away in 1997. Hugh Douglas was one of those players. Central State is a division 2 school.

Rumor on the main board that he visiting Michigan again this week. Honestly i dont think this kid has interest in Notre Dame and i know there is people on this board who don't want to hear that. I dont know how many times he has visited Michigan this spring but i know this will be more than his second visit up there.

He seems genuinely interested in the Wolverines among some others. I also think that he really does not have a lot of interest in us either. Slim to none is what our chances are if I had to guess.

I think he wants to walk in the door and start. And he can do that at Michigan. But, he has 4 guys who are pretty good sitting there. 1 will be a senior, 1 a junior, 1 a soph, and 1 a freshman. You do the math.

Let him go there. Lynch, Ishaq, Rabassa, Councel and Tuitt (maybe Niklas) will eat his dinner for 3 years.

My buddy who is a HUGE Missouri fan told me a couple hours ago that Kiel is in Columbus today, and that this is his 3rd time there. Take it for what it's worth...

Given our system and current depth chart, this really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

I agree with you. This shouldn't be a huge surprise at all. We have pretty good depth at the position right now and I think he realistically didn't see himself playing much in the first couple of years. I think he wants a chance to start right away or soon afterwards and that opportunity is greater at a few other places.

Kelly's preference for dual threat QBs is no secret, and people are already talking about the ascendency of Golson/ Hendrix as a foregone conclusion.

What pro-style QB in his right mind would walk into a situation like that? (particularly one as highly rated and heavily recruited as Kiel)

Edit: Honestly, if it weren't for Kiel's legacy and his status as a "local" prospect, I doubt there would have been much mutual interest at all.

Well if we can't have Kiel, I hope he chooses Mizzou.

How long before we put a few more QB offers out there? Chad Kelly anyone?

The rumors swirling at Mizzou (and again, take this with a grain of salt - you know how fans are; ND fans can read a tweet by Keith Marshall saying he likes Kentucky Fried Chicken and they automatically scream that he's committing to Kentucky) is that Gabbert transferred out of Mizzou b/c he had heard that Kiel loved Mizzou and was going to commit there. Even my buddy was skeptical of that one LOL. But still, if I were a Mizzou fan, I'd be dreaming of a Kiel to Green-Beckham (sp) future combination. Might sound far-fetched, but DGB is a local product, and their offense is very attractive to QB's...

I am taking this with a grain of salt, but I thought the same thing when the whole Missouri visit came up. It actually makes sense with Gabbert gone, the possibility of early playing time is very real. Anything is possible and at this point it's just speculation, but I can see this because it makes a little sense when you step back and think about it. Missouri might be a good fit for him.

It may make our chances with DGB a little slimmer if Gunner commits there. Top QB going to his home state team....it just adds another PRO to his Missouri list.

If they both committ to Mizzou good for them. It's got to be a cool feeling to represent your home state. Having said that, I doubt they both do.

Why does any of this matter when he's obviously going to commit to Michigan this week?

And Brady Hoke can do what Weis did.. Bring in the #1 QB and some solid surrounding peices and stink it up for a handful of years.

I'm going to venture to guess Hoke has more success than Weis for two reasons. 1) He has head coaching experience. 2) He isn't just recruiting top skill position recruits like Weis. Do you see all of the DE's/LB's Michigan has already?

Agreed. Expecting Hoke to squander talent in Weis-like fashion strikes me as very wishful thinking.

Kiel to Michigan would definitely be a cause for Irish concern.

In all fairness to Weis, he did recruit 4* OL and DL guys in the 08 and 09 classes (Cave, Clelland, Trob, Bullard, ZMartin, Watt, Newman, EJohnson, Kapron, Stockton) but it was partly his lack of developing players and sticking with arguably lesser talented upper-classmen that led to his demise. Hoke is getting the trench players in his first recruiting cycle so if he can develop he will reap the rewards earlier.

hopefully mizzou...don't surprise me to not see us on that list. he was not even in my top 10 for this class anyway, not saying i wouldn't take him, but i'm not heartbroken (like i'm sure someone else on this site is who is probably on his way to the liquor store as we speak) all this does is make it easier for mauk to make his decision at his own time table and i would expect another offer or two to go out to a QB if this is official.

in regards to weis i don't believe his problem was as much about players as it was about player development...simply turns into another bob davie situation, he can get the players, but he can't coach them.
