Good pickup at a position at need. Love it. He's great a ton of things... nice and solid all around.

Badger's return from his mission will help bolster our number again... he'll also give us a John Lynch-esque hard hitting safety that we havn't had since the Burris days.

When does Badger return? I forgot about him...

Very good day for us Irish faithful. Happy that we got this great kid! Looks like we are doing an excellent job early in the recruiting process on the Defensive Secondary front. Couldn't be more pleased.

Nick played safety a few games sophomore year before being moved to RB. Junior year he took over QB and did a pretty good job, leading the team into the playoffs. Texas Tech brought their staff down to a game to scout him, he's talked with Chip Kelly, etc but as you can see he ultimately he went with the Irish. I like him bulking up to play OLB. He's a good kid that has some wheels and a big frame. I don't know how good he is in coverage so I think he'd be better served as an OLB, but I may be wrong. It's a good addition nonetheless. It is my understanding that his high school coach will have him play some defense this year to help his transition into ND's secondary.

Check out this tape YouTube - Sherman Oaks Notre Dame vs. Klein Oak Football Game September 7, 2009 he wears #2

You can see him at the :40, :51, 1:52, 3:11, 3:23, and maybe other points. And all those plays he looks extremely unimpressive. However..he is a competitive player and one of the best athletes on the field and he was probably 15 during that game. He is more experienced and stronger now, although technique and nastiness is lacking from that film. He's a better WR or OLB in my opinion. Maybe the coaches will get him into shape for defense.

Thanks for posting that here!

Thanks NDinLA, I know that you guys don't like B/R but I posted my Tee Shepard, Ronald Darby and I think my Tom Srtobel interviews here too. All these kids are really something special. Really happy about their opportunities. I will try to track down Justin Ferguson this week.

I don't believe that it is your work that any of the other veterans on this blog distrust. Your stuff is very interesting, as it is "primary documentation" and not rumor. Please keep us up on what you're finding out.

This kid is a tackling machine at safety. Rivals produced some video of his sophomore year. Really excited about him at safety.

When asked where Nicky was in regards to the Rivals 250, Farrell and Co. replied that they had simply not seen enough of him at Safety to give him 4 stars, but he has been impressive so far this spring and a good fall with have his stock rising.

I am not trying to start a brouhaha or anything but honestly I couldn't care less what Rivals thinks of him.

Rivals and Scout and all the rest of them are very accurate with the 5 star guys that everybody has known about forever...after that they are hit and miss. First off they don't actually scout most kids in person, so their ratings are of questionable validity. Secondly the blanket ratings regardless of system makes their evaluation of limited use. Finally, they frequently crank up a recruit's rating the moment he commits to Alabama or Florida, based (I suppose) strictly on that commitment.

I don't see why we should care one way or the other whether Rivals or Lemming or whomever adds stars to a prospect's rating. To me, it is enough that the staff has carefully evaluated this kid and offered him early...so he is obviously near the top of their board. I saw too many 5 star guys go absolutely nowhere under the Weis regime to even think twice about it. If Kelly and company see a young man who they can develop into a player, that means infinitely more than the recruitnik's stars.

Don't get me wrong, those no-brainer 5 star guys are great to get, provided they have the academic potential to be successful at ND...but I don't think Rivals or Scout or whomever has clue one about half of these the 3 and 4 star kids. Their star ranking is mostly based on second hand info and I guarantee that Baratti's rating will improve based solely on his verbal to ND. If he had verballed to Alabama it would have risen even further...so after the top tier the rankings are irrelevant.

Fair enough, but understand that it's because of rivals and scout, etc that half of us follow recruiting... We wouldn't know much beyond 'somebody signed' if it weren't for those sites. And if we don't follow/want the guys that they deem 5*'s, then how would we actually know who we're hoping ND signs? It's not like you, or I, or anyone else on here ACTUALLY knows who a player is, or how good he's going to be... The recruiting sites might not be spot on, but take them for what they're worth. Personally, I'm EXTREMELY glad we have them.

Whether we like it or not, a hell of a lot more 5*'s end up being studs than 3*'s... Of course it's not a given, but you let me take 100 5*'s and you pick your best 100 3*'s and we'll see who ends up with more kids in the NFL. I'll trust the recruiting sites/experts more than anyone else, simply because I have no one else to differ to.

I haven't seen video of him playing safety since his sophomore year. He'll play there again this year. The ratings services will adjust accordingly.

From an article I read (I believe it was the Bleacher Report one posted in this very thread), it sounded like he wasn't going to play a whole lot of safety this year.
