Lunacy?

When bowls were local exhibition games to fill hotel rooms during the offseason nobody cared.

When they became the method of determining the National Championship they became of significance. (The NC used to be awarded at the end of the season.)

When the conferences struck exclusive deals with bowls guaranteeing slots for their members to teh exclusion of better teams and then redistributed that revenue to their members to the exclusion of others that was anti-trust territory.

When the BCS's first czar was the Commission of the SEC at the same time setting up Conference Division Championship it was to manipulate the NC game selection process.

When the coaches in the selection process vote secretly about who gets to play in the BCS games while their schools, conferences, and own pockets (performance guarantees) benefit something stinks.

Kudos to Hatch for lighting the fire under the Justice Department.

Now let's see if he has the balls to take them on over illegal immigration.

Are they already done sifting through the intel from the bin laden raid?
I would think they have places to allocate their resources.

Total crap, man. You think they can only do 1 or 2 things?

Another poster said has it right: The money involved makes it imperitive that the feds monitor this stuff.

Look at Boise? Look at Auburn in 2005? Everyyear(it seems) some school that is part of the same division as the other BCS bowl teams and just finds itself outside of the big dollar conferences get screwed over.

Hell, if Notre Dame fans can't support the likes of Boise State and the like, then what the hell does our independence really mean?\

Screw the NCAA and screw the BCS and screw the lil guys getting shafted by the big conferences.

Go Justice Dept and Go those who are looking out for the lil guys.

First off............. NO ONE who is eligible for bowl season play is excluded from the BCS. Since the 2004 regular season, the following Non-AQ schools have played in BCS bowl games.

Utah (2004, 2008)
Boise State (2006, 2009)
TCU (2009, 2010)
Hell, even Hawaii got a BCS berth, after the 2007 regular season.

How is that exclusion? Not having an automatic seat at the table is not the same as being excluded from the table.

Secondly; I'm not a lawyer, but I'm pretty sure that, to prove anti-trust, you have to be able to prove that the entity is doing something to stifle legitimate competition. I'm not sure that the BCS Conferences have ever done anything that would keep the Non-AQ schools from forming their own alliance, and naming their own National Champion?

Really? First of all, the gov't wasn't too busy to pass a budget, it's just that there is far too much partisanship for agreement to be reached on one. As for the 2nd point, well, you lost me. If your point is that our government just needs to keeps it's hands off of everything, I say, stop asking for help after tornadoes, floods, terrorist attacks, etc, etc, you can't have it both ways my friend. Do you also want the DOJ to not look into the Wall Streeters that are speculating on the price of oil and driving the price up as a result, is that too intrusive and over reaching, or does that suit you? The BCS needs to have their cage rattled. If they can't do things right on their own, they'll get a nudge.

1st point... there was no partisanship in October when one party controlled every aspect of the Gov. and now says it had too much on it's hands to worry about it... the point being maybe the Gov. should handle the basics of their job for once before getting involved in their next disater.

2nd... you're actually comparing the BCS to terror attacks and floods victums??? really? give me a break.

If you have any real interest in this problem, read Death of the BCS by Wetzel, Peter, and Passan.
They report $600,000+ salaries for the Bowl CFOs (for an event that last at most one week) and payoffs to college ADs of $60,000+ while colleges are loosing millions.
The bowl system stinks and persists only because of these payoff to the ADs, the stupidity of the college presidents, and the maleficence of the university boards of trustees.
I hope the Justice Department chews their ****. (the board won't let me say what I want, but most people would recognize which end of the horse it is that is facing South when the horse is walking North)

I wasn't for a minute comparing the 2, just stating what we hear all the time. Keep your damn gov't hands out of my business... until and unless it suits me. I do actually believe in limited government, and fiscal responsibility, my point is you can't scream one minute to have the government back off and the next scream that they aren't involved enough.

I'm torn.

Yup. I feel strongly either way.

So I'll omit my opinion. We know what the bible says about lukewarm...

Far far far more pressing needs which our Dept. of Justice needs to be exaimning than a game. The game makes money, but it isn't going to dent that 14 Trillion that is constantly growing either. Absolutely ludicrous that a game is something that is deemed important with our nation in the state it is.

I'm as fervent a BCS and NCAA hater as anyone. I also think folks can walk and chew gum at the same time...but seriously. Seeing the insanity of some of things happening in Utah, and on the national scene...this is just not that important.

Let me tell you about Mr. Shurtleff from Utah...

He has failed to prosecute the two biggest organized crime syndicates in the state of Utah, polygamists and illegal aliens...simply because he shrinks from the challenge. Both groups conspire and utilize a systematic approach to defraud the state and federal government of aid dollars set aside for law abiding citizens in need...he's yet another "politician" that won't deal with the things that matter. And now he wants to take on professional mafioso in the BCS and NCAA...Come on Mark, pack it in.

Add that to the insane idea of distracting the complete idiots in DC who have, for decades, been unable to understand the simple concept of a BUDGET!

To me, this is an issue worth discussing when unemployment is 4.5, and the trade defecit with China is gone, we've determined a freaking coherent energy policy, and the national debt is in the 10s of Bs not Ts...oh, yea and we aren't fighting an asymetrical war on self- igniting stoneage zealots.
