So much as we know, dude. Who knows what's going on behind the scenes and what's really on the table... as a fan I'd like to know as much as possible, but I believe that there are certainly things that Kelly and co. don't want paraded around to the public. It wouldn't be all that surprising if there's an unspoken agreement between the staff and Mauk that they are waiting to hear from Kiel first.

Not saying that's true, but it wouldn't shock me. Elite universities such as Notre Dame are capable of doing these things, and the Irish look to be back near the top of the recruiting world with our recent gains.

Maybe, but I'm not just talking out of my arse here. I agree that we don't know everything; not even close actually, but I'm talking from a perspective of what ND insiders say and what Mauk's camp is saying. ND just went to visit Mauk (one of their first visits) at his school and according to his dad (also his coach) they are still heavily recruiting him. He also said that Mauk will make a decision sooner rather than later, and most guess it'll be withing the next month. Kiel won't decide until the summer.

Soooooo...if Mauk (by many accounts) has ND as his leader, and is going to announce before Kiel does, and many insiders say that ND is high on Mauk and will take his commitment, it's safe to say IMO that he has a commitable offer.

NDinLA, agree with you.

Mauk is considered one of the elite QBs of this class....highly unlikely that ND would be one dimensional and have Kiel their one only and tell someone like Mauk you are second fiddle.

Well, I got a bit of an update on Kiel today at Easter dinner. I was in Columbus for a family get together today. My cousins attended East and my uncle was a coach with the Columbus East varsity squad until last fall. Anyway, my cousins were in the same grades as, and played ball with Gunner's older brothers.

One of my cousins had been talking to Gunner's brother Drew recently and in talking about Gunner the older brother said Gunner has genuine interest in ND, but the depth chart is sort of an issue. Not in the sense that he doesn't want to compete; he realizes he will have to compete anywhere he goes. However, if he can go to a school where he can play soon, that's his goal. I guess Oklahoma and Alabama both have been in his ear about potentially playing early on. Gunner also really wants to get to ND and is really disappointed that he wasn't able to make trips earlier due to winter weather a few months back. BK and his staff are doing a great job here and GK really likes the staff and how personable and caring they seem. The no BS approach is one thing he really likes.

I know it's not a great update, but from my blood "source," I can tell you that Gunner does have genuine interest, really loves ND, but is putting his obvious ties to ND aside and looking for the situation that best suits him. He does not want to commit until he is 100% certain of his choice. And, in today's recruiting climate, I can totally dig that.

Been waiting for a gem like this for awhile. Thank you. If Mauk pulls the trigger first and Kiel goes elsewhere to get early PT so be it.

We had every one of these indications already. It's nice to hear it though. He'll be a great QB. By the time he heads to the NFL, we'll have won an NC... Unfortunately for him, probably without him.

at this point, looking at the depth chart, I'd be very surprised to see him come to ND...he's got a really good chance to go to either of the two other schools he's favoring and play early. one thing is for sure if he comes to ND and earns the starting position let's say as a sophomore, you know he's the real deal and was able to beat out 3-4 very good QBs.

I could definently see our QB competition right now maybe hindering our chances at landing him. This kid is special and should be an outstanding QB at the next level but the more I think about it, I really don't see him coming to ND. I would LOVE to have this kid, but at the moment we have some very talented QBs on the roster battling it out to see who will start. I really don't think this kid would be scared of some competitiveness, but at the same time the competition at the QB position at ND is ridiculous. I honestly see him going somewhere where he has a shot at some play time early as opposed to here where he would be lucky to get some play time by his Junior year.

He'll sit at least 2 years at either Oklahoma or Alabama. Coaches promising him anything different are liars.

At ND he could potentially sit only one year... if Crist keeps the job, stays through 2012 and then he beats out Hendrix/Golson.

I brought this same point up before. I had many people disagree with me, but I am with ya, brutha. Kiel would get 2-3 years of starting at ND in my opinion. I like our current QB's, but Kiel would be hard to keep off of the field.

We are in better shape at QB than we've been in some time with regard to depth. But, to say we are rock solid at QB for the the next four years is a bit of an overstatement. I look at ND's QB depth and see some nice potential, but nothing that screams "can't miss." We have an incumbent starter who is very injury prone and highly inconsistent. We have a backup from last year who doens't have a particularly strong arm and is very immobile. Then, we have a true frosh and a soph who haven't played a down of football at ND yet. I would think that the top QB in the class wouldn't see that situation as a brige too far. In fact, I would think it might give him confidence that he could, indeed, compete for early playing time.

The typical laughable overhype of good but not great (or certainly unproven) players at ND notwithstanding, Keil has a great shot at coming in and competing if he is as good as reports say he is. If he looks at ND's depth chart and the question marks that are peppered through it and is afraid to come in and compete, I'm not sure he is right for ND anyway. Now, I'm not saying that is the case, as this argument seems to made almost exclusively through speculation on message boards. But, he seems like a bright guy. He probably watched our spring game and last year's season. How could he think he couldn't compete against our depth chart?

To echo wooly, this is spot on and what a lot of people have been saying. Ignoring Tommy Rees for a second, according to the "experts" and "scouts" he shouldn't be worried about Hendrix for the same reason Clausen wasn't worried about Frazier. His only concern should be a guy like Golson who has some unique abilities Gunner doesn't have... and even then if Gunner is as good as he is rated it shouldn't be much of a concern at all.

At the end of the day, I just hope that he is aware that the only school where he could be guaranteed early PT is Indiana. Alabama and Oklahoma will give him plenty of competition and any guarantees of early PT are a total farse.

Sorry bro, but I have to chuckle at this. You have a kid who has only played up to his junior year in high school, vs 2 guys who were very highly recruited by some of the top schools in the nation, guys who we saw play their senior years in high school, and guys who we have already seen play AT NOTRE DAME as college players and do some VERY NICE things (albeit in practice and a spring game). Yet the junior is 'can't miss' and those other guys have nice potential. Give me the bird in hand (2 excellent ones in this case made for Brian Kelly's spread in this case) over the 'can't miss junior' who may or may not even come to ND. (And I hope that Kiel does come to ND, then sits for 2 years until he masters the system and is mature enough to lead us to multiple BCS games. Veteran talented QBs win MUCH more than talented inexperienced ones!)

I agree that he could compete for playing time, just like Golson and Hendrix are, but that goes for any good QB and that goes for Kiel at the other places as well. But the point remains that he will still have to learn a completely new system and compete against VERY talented players who are already ingrained in the system, players who built rapports with their receivers, their RBs and their line. I get the feeling that some people think that Kiel will step on campus and immediately start (they're not coming out and saying it straight out, but the implication is there), which I will bet my bottom dollar that he won't. It's too damn tough of a position.

And Wooly, I already know that you're saying he'll start as a redshirt freshman, so no need to rebut and say you never said he'd start as a true freshman - we've been down that argument before!

There is not one 'can't miss' prospect in the country because everyone has a chance of busting, but the number one quarterback in his class is certainly as close as it comes to that label. You're over-thinking what GoIrish said.

Anyways, from everything that I've heard Oklahoma is VERY high on Blake Bell and Alabama fans were all expecting McCarron to secure the starting job for the next three years (and then there's Phillip Sims, the second rated quarterback in the '10 class) before Kiel came around. I don't know how Kiel could be intimated by our depth and not by those two schools'... especially when our quarterbacks were all much lower rated than him coming out of high school, except for Crist who I fully expect to still be the starter next season. If he chose Notre Dame, it's expected that he would be given a shot at winning the starting job in his redshirt freshman year.

On this point, would he have a better chance of starting as a RS frosh at Alabama or Oklahoma? I don't know if people are trying to imply that it's probable he'll start as a RS frosh (I know I certainly am not) but I do think it is fair to say he has as good of a chance here as anywhere of being a multi-year starter or playing early.

Think of guys like Matt Barkely (a comparably rated recruit) who went into situations with a more stacked depth chart of senior talent but won the job as a true frosh. Jimmy Clausen beat out Jones and Frazer (both top 10 level recruits with a comparable experience edge to Hendrix and Golson). With top rated guys (a la Pryor, Clausen, Barkely, Stafford, Mallet, etc. etc.) they often crack the depth chart early even with talented guys on the roster in front of them with more experience.

Just my two cents. I think that he will have comparable competition at Alabama and Oklahoma to what he will face at ND and that there is no guarantee that he will play early at any of those schools. There will be competition against other skilled players at every school on his list but Indiana; if he is the best QB he will play, if he isn't he won't.

I'm glad that you remembered my stance on it, but who exactly do you think assumes Kiel will start day one? I don't know of anybody on this site. I think most people on this site that are high on Gunner look at it from the standpoint IrishLAX states above. There is an overwhelming amount of historical data regarding #1 overall QB's and when they end up overtaking their competition and earn the starting gig. To assume that will be different at ND because we like our current roster is a tad niave.

I think that if Gunner chooses OU or Alabama, its because he wants to play there more than at Notre Dame. By the time he chooses his school, he will fully understand that competition will be part of any major program.

Not at all saying Kiel is can't miss. Saying that he IF Keil is afraid of our depth chart, even if some of the players on it have done some nice things in practice and the spring game, I would question his confidence in his own ability. And again, I'm not saying this is what he is thinking at all, just that IF what is being said on message boards about his preference for a weaker depth chart, he might be better served looking to Miami of Ohio or Indiana, because nothing is going to be handed to him in a top tier program. At ND he will have to compete against talented QBs, for sure. But, the Irish depth chart certainly is not such that there is no way he could get on the field as a frosh. While I'd prefer that didn't happen, I'd think that if I were the top QB in the incoming class that I'd be confident enough that I'd give them all a serious run for their money. I personally would much rather QBs have AT LEAST a year in the system before they think about seeing the field. My post was more about confidence and attitude of a recruit than it was about who is more valuable to the team and who will play when.

I would really hope that Kiel didn't come in and start from day 1. That would be disappointing if that happened because it would appear that we didn't do a good job of developing the other guys. I think Kiel like any other kid really shouldn't play until their junior year unless they are simply the best we have and give us a chance to win. Kiel would benefit from sitting a couple years and learning how to play, to become an NFL prospect, if that's what he truly wants.

Regarding #1 QBs, I don't doubt that at all. I also think very highly of our 2 guys (much higher on Hendrix now than I was simply b/c I never saw him in action), and I think both Kiel and Mauk will have a tough time coming in and competing for a STARTING spot in their first 2 yrs on campus. And I also don't want them to because of what I said earlier about inexperienced starting QBs. Now if they were good enough, then you have to be go with them. But hopefully those veterans are good enough to hold off the talented upstart. But yeah, I agree with your post and IrishLax's posts.

So let me ask, then i'll leave it alone. Is this a viewpoint built on your opinion of Hendrix/Golson or your opinion of Kiel?

The reason I ask is, as IrishLAX pointed out, historically #1 QB's beat out their counterparts within 2 seasons. If you go through previous #1 QB's, you will see that almost all of them beat out guys with similar or higher rankings to Golson/Hendrix. For instance, Barkley had to beat out Corp and Mustain, both of whom where much higher regarded than Golson or Hendrix. I'm not saying that one situation predetermines another, but i'm interested in whether your break in opinion, even with history against you, is based on your view of Kiel or our current QB's.

No offense meant, btw

I might be wrong but I think it was pretty clear that it was because of his impression of Hendrix/Golson. Which is a very valid opinion to have.

That was my assumption as well***, but you know what they say about a$$-u-me (ing).

***Like yourself, I don't necessarily agree with that premise, but I think that having that much belief in our QB's is not only admirable, but great to hear.

I agree with Ironman8. Its to quiet on are end.

I don't know fellas, it's been pretty quite for all of the teams involved. He hasn't been a fountain of quotes throughout his commitment. He said at the beginning that he was going to take his time and really think it out. I believe him. After all, according to most recruitnik sites, we are still in it.

Plus, he wouldn't break my heart like that. Would he?

Great ESPN article on Gunner:

Some of the nation's top quarterbacks have personal coaches, but not Under Armour All-American Gunner Kiel.

He doesn't need one considering he can get answers to all his questions right at the dinner table.

Gunner's father, Kip, played at Butler University; his oldest brother, Drew, played at Illinois State; and his other older brother, Dusty, currently plays at Indiana. If Gunner wants another opinion, his uncle Blair was a four-year starter at Notre Dame in the early 1980s before embarking on a nine-year NFL career.

"My dad and my two brothers have basically been my QB coaches," Gunner Kiel said. "They have passed on the knowledge they have learned in college and from the camps they went to while I was younger. They always worked with me on my drops and getting the ball out quicker. ... All of the things necessary to be the best quarterback I can be."

Kiel, 6-foot-3, 215-pounds and a member of the ESPNU 150 Watch List, has received scholarship offers from Oklahoma, Alabama, Colorado, Indiana, Michigan, TCU, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Notre Dame and a host of others. The attention isn't surprising after Kiel accounted for more than 3,000 yards of offense and 46 touchdowns as a junior.

While each Kiel has went through the similar rigors of recruiting, Drew Kiel understands why his younger brother is such a coveted prospect.

"I would probably say he's the best out of all of us, there's probably no question about that," Drew said. "He's learned a lot from us and he's also has a lot of natural talent."

Drew elaborates further by saying that his younger brother's current recruiting situation should help him continue to improve as a quarterback.

"In [Gunner's] case, he can be a lot more relaxed with the process because he doesn't have to worry about the stress of getting the offers," he added. "He can focus on just becoming a better quarterback and that's going to be an advantage for him."

While Kip Kiel isn't necessarily going to call Gunner the best of the bunch yet, he also credits the ability to learn from his two older brothers as an element to his success.

"I wouldn't call him the ultimate Kiel because I've got three sons that are all excellent players and each one does something a little better than the others," Kip said. "Gunner still has a long way to go but he's fortunate to have two older brothers that know the game and love the game, and he's been smart enough pick their brains along the way."

Despite his older brother's declaration, the youngest Kiel remains a tough critic of his game on the field and his leadership skills -- both of which he works diligently to improve.

"I've tried to be a better leader for my team and try to be with them as much as possible," he said. "We're working on putting in the extra effort and doing everything as a team. I still need to be more vocal and be the person that people can rely on. I try to be upbeat about everything -- workouts, conditioning, studying the playbook. We've got a young team so it's a great opportunity to instill positive work ethics. So far everything has been going well. The more we talk about it the more positive the reactions have been. We're going to be a better football team this fall."

Kiel's leadership skills are what he feels will put him over the top as a prospect and a teammate. That and his will to win every time he steps on the field.

"I'm a great competitor, I hate to lose," Kiel said. "I'm going to work as hard as possible and try to make the other players on the team better every single day. Hopefully I can be the consummate teammate."

Not surprisingly the competitive gene runs in the Kiel family.

"The competition as far as being the best quarterback, I never saw that," Kip Kiel said. "But you put them on the basketball court here and it's a brawl."

He goes further into the competitive environment mentioning that Dusty got upset after losing in a video game during the past weekend.

"It's typical brother stuff," Kip adds. "All three are very close and they communicate with each other every day. They are happy with each other's success. My wife and I are very lucky."

When it comes to discussing other aspects of recruiting, Gunner Kiel is coy about which colleges he has visited and exactly what his future plans are. He visited Missouri last season and he's been to Oklahoma at least once.

"I've taken a few visits and I'm just trying to enjoy the spring and stay low key, for the most part," Kiel said. "But I've been to a few places."

As for what style of offense Kiel prefers, he believes he can adjust to any.

"I think I can fit in anywhere at the next level. And although there are always some changes and that's why I'm very open on recruiting, I think I can learn any offense," Kiel added. "I can do the three-, five- and seven-step drops. I feel like I'm a strong enough quarterback that I can develop into the right player for whichever scheme."

Much of Kiel's low-key approach to recruiting fits his personality. He might be receiving a lot of attention, but he isn't allowing the process to get too much for him to handle.

"He's a pretty laid-back kid and I think he's kind of embarrassed by all the attention," Kip Kiel said. "He doesn't like to get on the phone and talk about it too much. I think he avoids it actually. He's a humble kid and he has a lot of friends that he likes to hang out with.

"His older brothers went through the process and they tell him that all these people are going to tell you what you want to hear and it's up to you to go find the right school that fits what you want. And know that wherever you go you're going to have to compete hard and bust your butt."

One of the main things that Drew cautions his brother about is time management and how rigorous the schedule can be for a quarterback at the next level.

"Being able to balance the school side of it with football is very difficult," he said. "Just the schedule was a huge shock for me from workouts in the morning to school all day and practice in the evening. It's a grind. And the whole mental side of the game is much different, especially for a quarterback."

However strong the warnings are, the best way to understand it is through experience.

"He knows it's not going to be fun, it's a job, his brothers tell him that," Kip Kiel said. "But you really don't understand it until you experience it. When Drew and Dusty went through those first practices they said they felt like the worst quarterbacks in the world. Gunner will feel the same way and that's part of the process."

As for the near future, Kiel expects to participate in the Elite 11 national showcase in California later this summer. Whether or not Kiel is committed to a program by then remains to be seen, but he's in no rush.

"Whenever the time is right and I get that gut feeling that this is the right place, I'll make the decision," Kiel said. "But right now I'm just looking at what's out there and how it fits into what I'm looking for."

FAB FOUR?

ESPNU 150 Watch List QB isn't real talkative about what schools he likes, or who he's favoring. But he did talk about a few schools that are recruiting him.

Michigan: "They have a new coaching staff and they are bringing a new offense on the table that's going to feature the passing game a lot. It's going to be a good system and they will be successful."

Indiana: "Coach [Kevin] Wilson is very intense. The type of offense they run is very quick and high tech. My brother is there and he's really likes how everything is going so far."

Oklahoma: "Coach [Josh] Heupel and Coach [Bob] Stoops expect a lot from their players and especially their quarterbacks. It shows in the championships and the teams that have come through the program."

Notre Dame: "Their program is very family oriented and there are a lot of good people there. I've known Coach [Brian] Kelly and Coach [Charley] Molnar for a little while now. I like what they are doing."

If he ends up at Michigan I will flip out. I personally think, just based on a hunch from something he said months ago, that he will not end up at Oklahoma or Alabama because of the distance.

While a lot of you are ready to count us out... I truly feel that if we have a great season with Dayne Crist at QB and he really enjoys a visit that we will get him as long as Mauk doesn't commit first. Time will tell.
