Man hindsight is 20/20. It seems like weis got softer and softer as the program went straight into the ground.

I never saw the video before. I thought the program was on the upswing. I think CW was rebuilding from the basement where the previous coach left us. I think CW is the warrior who took on an impossible situation.

Your right in the sense that he returned talent to certain areas of the team, and proved everyone wrong who thought the academic standards were too high to get the best players. He gave us a small glimpse of the power Notre Dame football can be when it's at the top. More importantly, we will likely see the foundation he placed play a huge role in the success Brian Kelly will have. Weis couldn't get the job done, but he certainly set it up for his successor to start winning again. One could even go farther and argue that Weis' failure was a wake up call to the University and forced it to really come to terms with what it will take to return to glory i.e. let the next coach make the necessary changes to become competitive again.

I'm not convinced that Weis failed, but I kind of agree with the "wake up call" idea. But what the hell do I know?

Weis was hired late in the recruiting process. So in my mind, his first class was not part of his plan. He won right away with what was left, something the previous guy could not do. The program was nosediving at light speed.

After CW's first two years (as I see it) he had to start FROM SCRATCH. And that is the FAULT of the previous coach. I don't think fans understand the difference between freshman playing against seniors. They were tiny pups taking on the world. I don't care how many stars were attached to their résumés. And I swear the center on the team Jimmy's first year was screwing the team. (Just my angry opinion - how can a center consistently f.uck up a snap?). I think CW left the program in the right direction.

I was one of the first, if not the first, to call for his firing. For no other reason than he was just not head coach material. There was no improvement coming on the defense and with Comedy Hour that was our DCs, it wasn't going to come.

Charlie Weis is a great guy. He is an offensive genius. One hell of a charitable fellow. A dedicated family man. An ND Alum who would die for this school. Just not a head coach.
Florida is going to be crazy good once he gets his teeth in there. Muschamp defense with Weis offence? God help us all.

On Coach Weis: I liked most everything about Coach but the one thing that Coach Lou REALLY didn't like. Coach Weis played the upperclassmen "to death" in his first two years without any plan to what was going to happen replacement-wise in the next two. This philosophy is exactly the correct one in the pros [go for the Superbowl when you have the shot], but not when everyone leaves next year. Lou was REALLY angry about how "unmanned" Coach Weis had left us for his third season. And wow, it was painful.

Exactly right. How many times have you heard a football coach moan and groan about how bad it is that he has no replacement with any experience and yet he will play his stars with a 30 point lead?

I could have quoted Mick or any other posts on this subject-as far as I am concerned this was the most irresponsible piece of sports journalism I had seen in a very long time. It was totally intended to sully Notre Dame and its reputation. What the $%#@ do you think goes on on the sideline or in the dugout or on a basketball floor much of the time. I want gentlemen off the field but on it I dont care what they do as long as its within the rules-as far as I can remember cussing even to this degree was not a penalty. The guy just came from the NFL and most likely toned it down later but this was just a shot at Notre Dame- it had very little to do with Charlie Weis. Its like zooming in on Tiger when he misses a putt that tears his guts out-get a life and try to understand whats going on with the people who are actually in the arena. Of course its not good thats why they show it-we all did it in whatever sport we played to some degree. Charlie (as Gen George S Patton once said) was just a little more eloquint.

As mentioned by different posters above, Charlie's two biggest problems were lack of experience in managing a program and the lack of talented underclassmen on the roster he inherited. These two problems coalesced and eventually forced him use players far too young, inexperienced and physically unprepared. That problem snowballed and never allowed him to right the ship. In terms of X's and O's, I'm still a big believer in Charlie, but there is so much more to running a college football program than recruiting talented players, installing an offense and calling plays. You can see how Kelly really excels in a lot of these "program management" areas, and ultimately that is what will make him more successful at ND than Charlie. On the other hand, I'd still take Charlie to call my plays over just about anyone at the college or NFL level. Different skill sets, though.

With the type of athletes Florida is able to recruit from their own back yard, they will be really scary.

They just need a qb who doesnt wet the bed each time a rush is on him.

To people that don't like/understand sports, the "internal" culture will never sit well with them. They view it as barbaric. But they don't understand the mentality of the athlete or the value those in sports place on winning. And it is impossible to make them understand. Taking that into account, though, people in sports should probably be a little more guarded of their "internal" culture. Giving access to high-minded media types that don't understand the culture will most likely lead to getting excoriated.

These faux-intellectuals with a hard on for sports are just looking for a reason to vilify athletes and their culture. They only pay attention to sports when something like the Lizzy Seeberg thing happens; that is the only time anything athletic-related gets on their radar, and that is how they think of athletes and sports in general.

If I were a coach and ESPN wanted to bring their cameras in for a few days to put together a special, I'd be OK with it. 60 Minutes? That is a different story. You at least have to retain the right to have final approval of what they air, in my opinion. The 60 Minutes audience doesn't look at things the same way the ESPN audience does. Some of that stuff we may think of as routine, but it is shocking to the uninitiated.

I completely agree with you. Coach Weis is a quality human being and I am certain he is the first one to tell you he didn't do a very good job and the buck stops with him. As Neutered said as well, he left the program in a much better state than when he arrived.

A contract, incidentally provided by the former AD who left shortly after signing the contract. Lets see how he does at FL where, incidentally, he got another sweetheart deal of a contract which inclueds Charlie Jr. being on the sidelines in some official capacity that noone can explain.

Appreciate the feeling but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone walking away from $7M except the really rich. Just my opinion...

And he also used a significant portion of his earnings to build a facility for his charity. What a bastard! He re-instituted traditions like singing the alma mater with the student section after games. Jerk! He made sure the proper respect was always given to service academies. A-hole!

I guess some people will criticize no matter what. I am still grateful to many things Coach Weis did during his tenure at ND and I think he is still a good representative of the University.

I agree with all the nice things said here about Coach Weis. I believe that he is a great guy and will always be warm towards Notre Dame. But, having said that, once I had been immediately picked up by the Chiefs and knew my salary situation was safe, I would have left most of the money behind and given the rest to my assistant coaches to tide them over between jobs. That makes me "counter-culture" I guess, but loyalty and friendship are big spiritual driving forces for me. [And, yes, on my smaller scale I have done these things.]

um didn't he distribute the his remaining money on contract to his assistant coaches after he was fired? I'm pretty sure I heard that somewhere during that period of time. I heard something like 1 million to most of the coaches.

Yes, Weis did bring talent like Te'o, Clausen, Golden, etc. But he couldn't win with them! The worst part about it is that we witnessed losses to Navy, 8 loss syracuse, Uconn, Duke, Purdue, blowout losses to USC, near loss to SAN DIEGO STATE. Horrific losses.

I don't care who the coach is. Such performances are inexcusable against many of those teams. Keep it in perspective, guys. Weis delivered the worst years in ND football history to the Irish faithful. My class will graduate as the losingest class in Notre Dame history. I don't think I want to thank Charlie for that.

How do you know he got $7 million was that reported? Or just speculation?

I don't think Weis got softer. His play calling may have gotten more conservative but he was pretty insane with it in '05. I just think he couldn't recruit defensively. I know he pulled in a few big names most notably Manti, but the difference in defensive recruiting with Kelly is night and day. Maybe a better defensive coaching staff could have made his teams more successful but talent was what was really lacking.

You're totally right about the defensive recruiting and coaching, but when I say soft, I'm talking about the fact that he stopped chewing out his players like he did in his first two years (As seen in the video). He got really soft in approach and demeanor of interacting with his players, kinda buddy buddy with them. The fact that we never had a running game speaks volumes about how soft he was. A team generally takes on the personality of its coach. We never had tough guys in the trenches who punched people in the mouth because Weis simply failed to develop that in them.

Our team looked soft most of the time. We didn't see the team ever stomp on anyone. It was more like us getting punched in the mouth and then reacting by folding up like a beach chair. At times, we shamefully looked like garbage. And that's on the coach.
