The intensity, tempo, involvement, and fun of practice...

Something that was missing for years, before Kelly.

1:57 to 2:02 with Diaco is awesome. I replayed that about 10 times, I love it.

I'd be more worried about that if he looked that way in practice 12-14, remember he still basically a high school senior.

Hope Robo Cam is ok, would be a huge blow, I was looking forward to seeing how he's developed this spring.

Saw big Nix throw a Olineman out of the way in 3 on 3s with ease (dudes a monster)

Also, nice to see Welch #82 make plays in the passing game, he could be a sleeper contributor.

I saw an awful lot of great stuff going on already. But I want to make a little BS on the running back situation now that Cam Roberson looks like he's gone down for a significant time.

1). Toma was obviously in there to give Cierre and Jonas some relief;

2).Kelly's jokes about the reporters trying out were not entirely jokes, as, again, all he is really saying is that he needs a couple of people to simulate running back play to give Cierre and Jonas rest. He basically said exactly that at a shortly later time;

3).Kelly stated before CamR was hurt that he was not ready to play [he meant mentally/systemically not physically]. His response to such a question about Roberson was an instant and emotive "No!!". This probably means that this injury will set CamR back far more than we would think as Kelly already thought that he had much work to do;

4).Kelly hinted that he needed two of these "filler" backs to join the team "until we get help in the fall", meaning August practice. Which TWO running backs would be coming in August?? Cam McDaniel and, one supposes that he's thinking of GAIII as the other. I mention the possibility because GAIII may be placed as an RB more than we've suspected if CamR can't go;

5).A statement was made and repped as to doubts that Cam McDaniel would be up to the task as a back-up RB. Particular doubt was expressed as to Blitz Pick-up. Everything that I've read and had told to be about CamM says "negative" to all that. CamM is a freak of hard work AND football study. The idea of him not understanding Blitz pick-up is almost beyond imagining. And he might well turn out to be one of the best "football gymrats" on the team, and capable of catching up to things as fast as anyone. I believe almost everyone is REALLY underrating him, almost in every way.

Summation: I don't like losing CamR for any length of time, especially since I haven't seen Jonas "prove it" yet. BUT, even with that, if coach wants to give CamM some reps, AND give GAIII a real shot at RB, I think we'll survive quite excellently.

I really like Cam and am very excited about him coming to Notre Dame but you say that he is a "gymrat" and yet his listed bench was only 210 during football season which is not very good at all. I am sure it has went up since then but still, that is pretty low

NDIRISH: you may be correct, but in many places in Texas they are dumping any emphasis on bench pressing as being WAY overrated as to athletic skills and even the best power producing exercises.

My brother, the head weightlifting coach of Team Houston and an Olympic national coach hardly has his athletes [even the non-olympic lifters] pay any attention to benching at all. He has gone so far as saying that it is a waste of time if it is taking away from more productive weight-training.

Benching is so thoroughly ensconced in everyone's ideas about training that it is tough to get it out of there. Cam McDaniel IS a Gymrat as his training films show---we had one earlier on this blog. And everyone referred to him that way.

There are many things that you can train on rather than the bench, and develop huge athletic gains. To the people who are on the front edge of weight training, in fact, almost any serious "on your feet" and "in athletic position" work is better.

Just because Kelly wants two walk-on RBs doesn't mean that he'll have two RBs among the group of incoming freshman. I don't think he's going to convert GAIII.

Bench Press does not give a good example of a FB players exposivess. Now if you said his squat was 210...then I would think there was an issue. CAM is going to turn some heads....

Not to be a dickhead, but WTF does a bench press have to do with playing runningback?

Love the intensity and athleticism. I don't remember seeing anything like it at ND recently. We're gonna put the hurt on some people next season.

To Dillon: I hope that you're correct, and I don't want any "conversion" either. I believe that GAIII is a destroyer at slot and probably Kelly thinks so too. But if say Roberson can't go, and Jonas doesn't step it up enough, then those RB backups to Cierre become a BIG deal. I believe that McDaniel is up to it, but think that Kelly, in such a desperate strait, might well put GAIII into play there as well. We just have to hope that Cierre is superstud, especially work-volume-wise, that Jonas comes of age as a truly competent all-around back, and that CamR can make it back too. Kelly has shown us that he WILL shake up a player's position if that's what gives the team more security, so wants and needs may get to be two different things.
