hmm... I guess we'll just wait and see... I'd be kinda surprised to see him leave... but at the same time Kelly half-joked "if you interview for another job you better get that job." I much more expect the former NU QB to take it.

That was for a lateral move. OC would be a promotion.

Does anyone have any idea of who could be a likely replacement for ND if he does leave? I admit that I have no idea of the likelihood of what he'll do.

Could be possible. People forget Warriner was an OC before coming to ND. He wouldn't be a big loss like Diaco or Alford.

Molnar seems like a guy who will leave within the next 1 or 2 years. I wonder if Kelly would hire a new OC, or keep the title himself. You'd think he would hire someone if just to boost recruiting.

Would you have said Diaco wouldn't be a big loss after the Navy game? You may have defended him then, I can't recall anyone doing so. He was as popular with ND fans as Mubarak is in Cairo.

Both Warinner and Molnar have about 25 years of coaching. Both have been OC's. Warinner for 3 at KU when they suddenly had a record setting offense and Molnar for 10 all, I believe, with Kelly. Both could be career assistants. Both need their tickets punched if they plan on moving up the career ladder.

I should think Kelly would be more comrfortable with Molnar as OC because of their past association with the same system. I don't know what kind of offense Warinner ran at KU. But both of them did well with lesser talent. And Warinner did it against tougher competition (Big 12 v Big East).

Both have had successes in recruiting, Warinner in Big 12 country and Molnar in the East. Both areas ND needs to pursue.

I thought the OLine played better this year. Less sacks, less "is that my man or yours". They didn't look like a CF (does the autocensor delete Cluster?). I don't know if the better OLine play was just better execution, more veteran chemistry, better conditioning, smarter players, or a better OLine coach. A bit of all I suspect but I give credit to Warinner. I wouldn't want to lose him and see the OLine regress.

I think it's premature for any of these guys to jump to another job based on last season. Pile up a bunch of W's in '11, win a BCS game, show consistency and not just a 4 game win streak. After '12 would probably make a better case for demonstrating excellence.
They'd have 2 more years in ND's media fishbowl to gain more experience vital to moving up eventually to an HC job. Experience Charlie Weis fatally lacked.

Slightly OT, but a lot of people (myself included) were fans of Diaco all season and did not throw him under the bus "Mubarak style." Yeah, maybe he caught more criticism for that game, who wouldn't? When you lose in that fashion everyone catches criticism.

I don't know why some people on this board have to sensationalize and generalize the opinions of posters here. I am sure there are plenty of logical people, regardless of opinions on one game months ago, that feel that losing a coordinator would be worse than losing a position coach. It is a totally reasonable conclusion to come to. So feel free to disagree with Rocket on him "not being a big loss" but I seriously do not see how his (or anyones) opinions on Diaco at a past point have any bearing on the validity that he would be a bigger loss than Warriner.

Just my 2 cents.

Wow but could you imagine Kelly and Meyer coming into some kids house to recruit him. Thats would be scary for other schools.

This is coming from a reformed dback, wide receiver, so this is hard for me (reformed in that I look more like an Olineman these days...:) )...seriously, though, its taken me some time to accept it, but the O-line is where you start to build a team...I started leaning that way over the years, and then it crystalized for me '07, as I watched how badly ALL facets of the game are stressed when your O-line sucks...

...Yes, defense wins championships, but there is a pre-requisite to that. You gotta at least have an Oline that can move the ball (or allow the QB to), and flip the field with a couple drives and score some...to illustrate what I'm saying, think about this, we could have had an NFL all Pro defense in '07, and we still would have gotten spanked.

If Wariner was the reason for what I saw as a quantum leap in Oline play this year (discipline, execution, stamina (e.g. USC)), give him a raise, buy him a puppy, give him an office with a view...whatever, but do not let him leave...we need a few years of stability there...

This is the price of success, there will be coaching changes, BK will get qualified people in to replace......I really don't see a need to worry about this.

I think Warriner would be a serious loss [this is not to say that Kelly MIGHT not be able to effectively replace him, but he is doing a great job]. Our line-play got continuously better all season and is poised to be elite next year---that has to be coaching. Also, my memory is that Warriner significantly helped close recruiting with several of the early recruiting "deals" for this class. Having a veteran once-head-coach in the "living room" has to add to the glitter and authority. Wish we could keep all our guys, at least until we get four/five years of solidity.

p.s. West Virginia has had two outstanding O-line coaches in a row, and both of them got poached by other programs. The WVU line has degenerated each year since the second of them left, from being listed as the outstanding unit in the nation a couple of years ago to mediocrity. These guys make a he*l of a difference and are not a dime a dozen.

Warinner leaving means 4 o line coaches in 4 years under 2 different schemes. I know it's a business for these guys and they aren't emotionally attached, but one year and jump? Come on

Other schools will come after our coaches... it will only get worse if the current trend of success on the field and in recruiting continues. As long as it's a promotion at a top tier program I have no problem with it.

Stability of the coaching staff is important. ND should pay their coaches well so that none of them even consider lower to mid level coaching jobs... these guys seem to have come to ND to accomplish something special... pay them well and I see most of them staying at least a couple years to see what they can accomplish at ND.

You would think that there would be an unwritten understanding between Kelly and his coaches, he brought them to ND and created the opportunities for them. Coaching stability at ND is one of the things this program needs right now and for a coach to put in a year and run shows no loyalty or appreciation. I'm not bashing any coach, and sure won't blame someone for trying to better themselves but I personally wouldn't invest only one year at a program that I was brought in to help rebuild.

I agree but if ND doesn't pay their coaches you can't blame them for moving for substantially more cash. It seems like ND has finally agreed to pay their head coach a competitive salary... they need to pay ALL their coaches like other top programs do to make sure no one is even tempted to leave for a job that is not substantially better. For the next couple years a coach at ND should not be even interested by any job that isn't at a top tier program.

Wasn't one of the reason people mentioned the LSU coach didn't move to Michigan was that they wouldn't be willing to pay his top coaches what they made at LSU?

Yes, I have always been behind Diaco 100% ever since he was hired to coach at Notre Dame. In fact, I would say that I have been one of his biggest fans/defenders since the Navy debacle. I could talk for a long time about what he did wrong against the Middies, but there is no doubt in my mind that Diaco will have a Muschamp-like rise in college football. There are many things that I really like about him including his personality, his attention to detail, his past playing days, and his rather impressive young coaching past. He has star written all over him.

On Molnar, he hasn't been an OC in something like 10 years, he's never been an OC at even a middling school, and he doesn't call the plays at ND. I do believe his entire time with Kelly he has been a position coach working with receivers and quarterbacks. I am sure he is a great coach who works well with position players, but I'm not really sure how big of a role he has on this staff. He's been mentioned on a handful of occassions for some job openings and there weren't many stories about him on the recruiting trail like many of the other coaches. As such, he is probably viewed as being somewhat expendable and replaceable since Kelly calls the plays anyway.

Warriner could be a big loss, but I have faith that Kelly will be able to effectively replace a offensive line coach. I don't think it was the coaching per se that was the problem during the Weis era so much as the lack of a focus on a SYSTEM that doomed the O-line. If Warriner leaves, Kelly will bring in another coach who will know right away exactly how his lineman have to play and can go out and teach that from day one. That never happened under Weis who wanted his linemen to be lighter and more agile pass blockers one day and heavy road graters the next day.

I agree that we probably won't see any of these coaches jump ship right now, mostly because they likely smell the success coming and a lot of these guys do want to be here as Kelly takes Notre Dame up and up. But at the same time, we're starting to see other places be rumoring to take our coaches, which is also a good sign that we're doing something right and others are confident in what Kelly is doing.

Personally, I'd be shocked if any coaches leave before this time next year, but losing Warriner wouldn't be a huge blow. Kelly has a system and any coach that comes in is going to understand that...whereas Weis' coaching staff was a **** show of differing philosophies. There will always be problems when 3, 4, or 5 assistans leave as we see with even the most dominant programs, but replacing one O-line coach can be easy.

Given Warriner's past success as an OC during Kansas' hey day a few years ago, I would expect he'll leave for another similar job anyway sometime in the next year or two. I am sure Kelly understands that and has a plan to replace him if that does occur.

Oh yeah, and don't ever doubt my loyalty to Diaco. I'll be the last one to jump off his bandwagon.

Looks like the sky is falling........so are you comparing BK to RRod or Bill Stewart, b/c I surely hope is better than either of those guys.....realistically, many of these coaches will have other opportunities in the coming years. You don't think Alfords work in recruiting isn't going unnoticed? He will be an O-Coordinator somewhere shortly, if not a head coach at a smaller school.......I think you need to trust the head chef here, BK is a man that has a plan for everything, some of you guys worry too much......relax and enjoy the offseason.

Bad news... apparently the job doesn't have play calling responsibilities and because of that Frost is out leaving only Warriner. Would Warinner really take a job that is an upgrade in title only? Maybe... and it might pay more... and he has connections to some coaches on that roster.

I'll put it at 50/50.

I hope that Warriner and this entire coaching staff returns in tact. If however we are going to lose a coach, would it be considered a silver lining if it happened now (only from a recruiting cycle perspective)? I love where this entire staff is going from blocking and tackling fundamentals to strength and conditioning to recruiting. Any loss from this staff should be considered a loss, period.

No play caliing responsibilities??? then why would anyone established take that job to work for that phsyco pellini if it was OC by title only job???
