Here's my question.

What do you guys predict Golson ends up doing this season?

1) Sits out and preserves a year.
2) Starts out sitting but comes in late in the season (ala Tommy Rees this past season)
3) Kelly frequently uses him as wildcat type of package.
4) Golson wows the coaches in spring/summer ball and is the outright starter this season (or shares time off the bat).

I'm going with #1, because I think Crist, Rees, and Hendrix are in a better position to lead ND. Seems most likely Kelly would end up saving Golson.

However, I'd love to see Golson to be to effective to not be able to keep off the field.

I hope 1. But I hope it's a really tough decision. I want him to be the QB in the future, but right now I think we have some guys who could do the job and I'd rather not see players or years of eligibility go to waste.

I suppose the answer is: who could say with anything but a wild guess?? To add a small amount of fact to possible speculations, though: This last year's class was 23 scholarships. For a variety of reasons it shrunk to 19. Of those 19, Kelly played about half of them in year one [9]. Of the guys he played, several were because of speed on special teams. Two were considered too good to leave off the field defensively [Shembo & Schwenke] but did not start. Two played offensively: one starting due to emergency [Rees], and one due to non-deniable skill [TJ].

This says to me that Kelly WILL play someone, even regularly, if their skill set is too much to ignore [always in relationship with the other options at the position], but that skill set better be terrific and definitely needed. It also tells me that Kelly would rather NOT play a youngster just to get a marginally better player on the depth chart.

Does Golson fit this scenario?? I don't know how'd anyone could put up much of an opinion until we see everyone in Spring ball.

I would. No way he beats out Crist, Rees (4-0 as starter), and Hendrix. At least not this early

I'm seeing Crist as the starter. Golson getting the red shirt. And despite Rees 4-0 resume, Hendrix getting the 2nd spot behind Crist. It'll all be very close though.

I agree, but it would be nice if Golson just wowed Kelly over.

Making him not able to red-shirt him.

i just think that if Golson CAN beat out Crist, Rees, and Hendrix then he could be HUGE

Well honestly, if he is better than them all after just this summer then we should easily win every game haha

Lol at this post from II. Just wow

Maybe Golson can move over to defensive cornerback since ND has so many quality QB's and so few DB's with great athletic ability. If he moves now by this fall he could be ready to play. Gray can be his mentor along with the Atkinson kids.

I wondered - Rivals seemed to be off a bit this year. You put your finger on it; they are smoking crack.
