I know everybody will think I am crazy, but I can feel a big year coming. This reminds of the Holtz days. We bring back most starters on offensive and defense, and just imagine the developement of last year class, they will be big time this season. Our quarterbacks competition will bread a leader of the likes we havent seen since Tony Rice. We are no longer soft, we will not wilt in the 4th, we are dominating on the "D" side, again, finally. Our frosh coming in are going to be the depth weve lacked since Davies was muddling things up. We are back, no longer will we be an afterthought in college football, we are college football.

I don't believe we will. We have a couple tough games. Stanford,USC, are going to be tough games. ANd don't look to hard past Mich State and MD. And then you have Navy. it speaks for it self until we beat them it will keep coming up.

All the pieces are not in place yet. Love Tommy Rees but he hasn't developed enough yet. Remember Tony Rice? it takes time. But after some more player development with Kelly's staff and Longo they will be right there. Having said that, we are talking about the ND Spirit, so you never no.

We don't even know who our quarterback will be this year. Kind of a key position on the football field. Rees limits our offense with a weak arm and an inability to run the football. Crist struggles with accuracy and I highly doubt he will have 100% of his mobility. As much as we talk about Hendrix, nobody has seen him on a college football field.

#2

We return a runningback that will likely start, but that has one year of experiance sharing carries with other backs. We don't have an established every down running back. Cameron Roberson could step in, but nobody knows what kind of production we will get.

#3

Losing Kyle Rudolph will hurt. Tyler Eifert looks to be a very capable fill in, however you don't replace a game changer like Kyle Rudolph. We will have to see if Ragone is granted a 5th year and how new comers like Alex Welch and Ben Koyack step in.

#4

Our defense looked good in the last 5-6 games of the season but lets not jump the gun. We need to see it for a full year before we praise our defense. We are quick to jump on the idea of Louis Nix filling in for Ian and dominating but we have seen anything on the field.

We still have a ton of "what ifs" before the season begins. Do we have potential and a ton of promise coming in with recruiting? No doubt but all of what we are banking on right now is unproven. We go from 6-6 to 8-5 and now we are talking about championships? I think we need to pump the brakes just a little bit. Let's see who steps up at quaterback to lead out team. Let's see who fills in for Armando and Robert? We are losing our best defensive player in Ian Williams. Our seconday still has questions floating around.

On the other side, we are killing it with recruiting right now on the defensive side of the ball especially. Our schedule is on our side in my mind. Michigan will be in rebuilding mode, as will Pittsburgh. If we don't win 9+ games next year it has to be considered a disapointment. But when we're talking about championships, that's a jump. Let's talk about a possible BCS birth or a Capital One bowl birth before we start talking about having to go undefeated to make a BCS Championship.

To pull off such a big upset, Kelly will have to pull out his magic wand and accelerate certain things that we have no right to expect this soon. But to do it, these things have to happen:

1]. Some quarterback has to emerge as a fully polished Kelly-system QB who understands not only the "System" but the idiosyncrasies of all his dangerous receivers. This is far and away the biggest requirement. The business of working out the chemistry between QB and receiving corps might be the toughest thing to expect;
2]. Cierre Wood needs to step up and be the CONSISTENT elite back that we know he can be. If he doesn't do so, then we need a surprise from Gray, Roberson, or, less likely, a freshman [currently McDaniel];
3]. The O-line and receiving corps are already there---just no injuries and normal yearly growth;
4]. No injuries to the vets in the defensive backfield. If none, they will be great;
5]. A settled linebacking corps and player rotation to take advantage of the different run-stopping abilities and pass-defending abilities of players who are not yet complete football players but have great upsides. Diaco may have to be a prophet to get the right mixes on the field play-to-play;
6]. serious stepping up of the defensive line play to push the line-of-scrimmage, disrupt things like Navy's option, and constrict the opposing QBs time and space. As most know, we were not very good at this last year, but got better. Even the superkids coming in may not develop fast enough to help on this next year;
7]. No schedule surprises [i.e. the sudden appearance of a monster team on the schedule --- something which gels without warning];
8]. No sleep-walking upsets. Hard to be at your best every single game.

I went to the trouble to make a long list just to demonstrate that an awful lot has to happen, especially when you have a team which hasn't nearly solidified yet, in order to go undefeated or anything approximating such. Others on this board can grow that list longer.

I don't expect an undefeated season this quickly or even a BCS one, but I realize that it is possible. The problems of the QB<---> receivers "chemistry" and the consistent "stud performance" at RB make this seem like a bit much to ask of Kelly in his second year.

If you want a legit shot at a championship, maybe Te'o's senior year, but I'd say the year after when these young studs are juniors or in Henrix/Rees/Massa's et al cases seniors. And that despite the strength of schedule. We "gunna be Beast" by then, and the schedule might be irrelevant. Having said that, I expect us to be VERY good every one of these years.

In this day and age in college football, with the high turnaround of players and coaches, we have a shot at a NC game. Auburn was off the map the year before, and they had frosh all over the field contributing.

I think all will be resolved in the spring/fall camps, and you are underestimating the talent we already have.

It is going to come down to how whoever is the starting QB is going to perform. We know the defense is going to be improve and ready to go next season. The offense should be able to execute a lot better next year. The only question mark we have is at the QB position. We have enough talent there, but a lot of ifs...

Oregon freshmen QB, Auburn JC transfer= BCS tittle game. This isnt the 70's, changes happen fast, watch, this team is already special, they have went through the growing and pains, last year was a time capsule of the last 20 years of ND football, we started strong, faded a little, then finished stronger.

I do not normally call people names but you are a homer. this is why ND football has become a joke. People think evey year this should be in the running for National chapionship game. Dude this is Kellys second year here. they are just now comfortable with the offense and we a 2 Qbs that have played half a season.

At least we are debating how quick the meteoric rise is going to take, not if!
That is truly welcomed after the past 20 yrs.
It might not or probably won't happen next year, but if the biggest question is the QB pos then we have the right coach to make it happen sooner than anticipated.

We have two QBs right now I have faith in. Crist or Rees could be the starter and Im cool. But look at the running game at the end of the season, that is what we are going to watch all season. Our Qb just needs to mansge the game, we have play makers at every position, even on the defense.

Its been proven that to win a championship you need a top 10 defense, a top 20 running game, and a top 20 passing attack. we currently have 1 of those things, we also need an elite QB, this could be rees, hendrix or golson but not in only 1 spring. plus you have to remember that other teams on our schedule are getting better (Stanford, MSU,ect) In short, we wont win a championship next year HOWEVER i do think that the incoming freshman class will leave ND with a championship ring.

We totally have a chance to win out our schedule. It will NOT be easy in the least and is more than likely not going to happen, but it is possible. If we do win out I can't see us being up to the competition of who ever we play in the Championship.
Its the Secondary I worry about mostly. That we can get beat deep.

I don`t believe a NC is in the works for next year. I do believe a BCS game is. MSU, UM, and Tulsa are all games that should have been won this year. One or two plays in each of these determined outcome. Depth at quarterback in 2011 isn`t as big an issue as this last season. That alone is huge. The defense seemed to be getting the scheme the last 4 games. With 8 returning starters on offense and 9 on defense, with the depth that we have due to injuries and playing time in 2010, a BCS game should be reachable.

To the best of my recollections, Florida, Texas, Ohio State and Auburn all won with second year coaches.
"Yes, but they inherited a lot of great talent." (And Kelly inherited a bunch of bums?)
But to win it all you must be very lucky. Remember, Ara lost it in his first year when his reliable corner back fell and allowed U$C to win in the closing seconds of the last game; Holtz lost it when his best and most reliable line backer dropped an easy interception that bounced off his chest just before the winning field goal.
So it is possible but I think only if we have a running QB.
Off the subject, but whatever happened to the past perfect verb tense? I think we need a grammar checker in addition to a spell checker on every computer.

We don't have the right to expect a NC next year. My expectations are high but I have learned through the years to temper them (I am 30).

I remember gloating to everyone about our 07 and 08 classes that were FULL of 5 and 4 stars (Clausen, Tate, Gray, Crist, Floyd, Fleming, Rudolph, Slaughter).. Don't we all remember how exciting those classes were? They pretty much guaranteed us a NC by now. That did not happen. That did not even come close to happening. I know it had alot to do with Weis' inability to develop players and surround himself with capable coaches.

I see BK developing players already and compiling a great class. But because of Weis, Willingham and Davie I cannot and will not get over-hyped until I see it. "It" being a stud defense and a consistent offense week after week.

Any program in the country who finished with more than 2 wins in a row probably thinks they have a shot at the championship right now. Like others have said, we have had teams that were much better on paper in the very recent past that flat out fell on their face. Inflated expectations certainly played a role in that.

If there's one thing we should know by now, it's not to confuse a good recruiting class with future success. Remember when Shaq Evans was going to be the next big thing?

I completely agree. I am way too excited about what Kelly and Co. are doing right now. But after the last 23 years of disappointment, we should all be very cautiously optimistic.

I really don't think he is too far off here fellas. If you think this year we should have won 3 more games, and had we won them it would have an 11-2 year. BCS game is not out of the question. Especially if the defense keeps improving.

You would have to be a fool to think Notre Dame will win a national championship next season. Hell, you'd be a fool to think one particular team will win the championship in 2011. This is not 2002 or 2005.

This team has questions, mainly at quarterback. To me, that is really the only large question mark. Everywhere else (Wood, Eifert, etc.) I am fairly confident in saying Notre Dame will be just fine.

That said, crazier things have happened. But anyone who has watched football in 2007 should realize it's about taking it one game at a time, not judging a whole season. Do I personally think Notre Dame could go undefeated? Yes, absolutely. They were painfully close to 10-2 and even 11-1 last season.

Look at some of the nation's top coaches and their first records at big-time programs:

Jim Tressel
2001: 7-5
2002: 14-1

Bob Stoops
1999: 7-5
2000: 13-0

Pete Carroll
2001: 6-6
2002: 11-2

Urban Meyer
2005: 9-3
2006: 13-1

Nick Saban
2007: 7-6
2008: 12-2
2009: 14-0

Gene Chizik
2009: 8-5
2010: 14-0

Brian Kelly
2010: 8-5
2011: ????

If anything, an ~11-1 Irish team in 2011 would only be the norm for all of the great coaches' tenures throughout the country. Many of them to have instant success. If I had to compare Brian Kelly's first year at Notre Dame to anyone's, it would be Jim Tressel's first year at Ohio State. Jim Tressel went 7-5 in 2001, but looked relatively good during it. And most importantly, he beat Michigan (like Kelly beating USC). Tressel's phenomenal 2002 recruiting class had an instant impact and helped them go 14-0 in 2002.

But, it took luck. You can't say Notre Dame will or won't do something in 2011 because on top of X's and O's and Hendrix's and Lynch's....it takes a good amount of luck.

Everything people are saying here about someone stepping up at quarterback, defense improving, etc. is true.

And while I don't think we will win a title next year, it's really not that crazy.

What he's saying about things changing really quickly in college football and teams getting really good, really fast is true.

Auburn was ranked #22 to start the season and finished with the 60th total defense and 53rd scoring defense...and they won a title two years removed from a 5 win season.

No one outside of Alabama woud have thought Auburn would win the title back in 2008. And we'll be ranked next year just about where Auburn was to start 2010.

Again, that's not me saying we will win a title next year, and we certainly don't have a Cam Newton-type player on our roster, but it's really not that crazy of an idea.
