Per IrishEyes:

Pressure Turns To Hounshell

With Notre Dame earning a verbal pledge from Ishaq Williams and odds high that Aaron Lynch could be a pledge by the end of the weekend, Chase Hounshell knows the clock is ticking. Sunday and Monday are set to be the final days before he makes a college choice.

Rest of the article is premium, but it seems Hounshell knows spots are filling up in this class pretty quick. If he wants in, he needs to act quick.

At this point, do we have room for him? (Assuming that Lynch commits)

Would be nice to steal one from Florida. If the staff is not feeling the love from Niklas, that could be why they are after Chase.

I'll be surprised if Kelly gives him a scholarship at this stage. All signs point to Lynch coming. All ranking services see Hounsell as a DE not an O-line. Build seems more DE, but Warinner is the recruiter [I put that down just to regional administration though]. IF Hounsell actually wanted to play O-line, then this becomes marginally more understandable, but I've not seen this. Does Kelly/Diaco want three DEs other than Carrico/Springmann [since with Tuitt/Lynch he'll have the two biggest bad-a*ses in the country] in this class. Maybe....

If we can get Niklas, I say we pass on Chase. I have watched highlights of both and Niklas is much more physical player. He shows good speed too.

Don't need Chase with a lynch commit
True with a Lynch commit he's not a need but he should be a want. He's a very good talent who extremely versatile as he's a very good DE, much better than Carrico and he's a good fit as a OL in a spread offense.

It's nothing personal but I've never thought Carrico as a DE was in class of talent that he would ever see any playing time. I like him much better on the offensive line as OG.

IMO ND has to get good DL when they can because there aren't many and there are even less that can get into ND and the pool gets that much smaller as only so many will have interest in ND.

If you have room and the needs are filled you don't pass up versatile talent of Hounshell and especially of a Niklas.

I think either way all 3 of the guys you mentioned would end up on offense regardless of where they came in, if we land LYnch. you're right both Hounshell and Carrico are protypical guard/tackle type of guys and would really help along the oline. I really have a hard time believing that Springmann won't end up on offense shortly after he arrives as well.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it part of Kelly's recruiting strategy to get jumbo athletes (6'6"ers) on board and then find a place to put them later.

I want this guy for the same reasons I want Lynch, Tuitt, Williams, Councell, Niklas, etc. Because they are big nasty beastly athletes! Don't care if they end up on the o-line, the d-line, or as linebackers. The coaches are gonna find the best fit for them and turn the Irish into a smashmouth football team.

I'm just gonna sit back and enjoy the show.

I totally agree we should take as many talented bigs as we can. I'm hoping we at least land one of the two.

not be rude ricochet but what are you basing your belief that hounshell is better than carrico on? Game film? I live in the area and Carrico plays division 1 football and Houshell plays division 3(top end d3 but d3 none the less) so the game film may be a bit deceiving. imo carrico will be more battle tested and ready to take the next step from a physicality standpoint but who knows...just askin.

Personally, I find Carrico to be a little slow coming off the snap. He is, though, a very physical player. I think he might be an outstanding OL, or DE if he can fix what I just talked about.

keep in mind he was playing on a bad knee but he probably does need a summer at luongo's beach...

This why ranking miss a lot of player and we see players that are 2 and 3 stars become stars because people go to the well that some come from non football power states or aren't playing in a top division. Just because schools in the top division doesn't mean it's better it's because they have a larger enrollment.

Talent is talent and it doesn't matter if they are playing in a top division or a smaller one the only difference is that it's harder to evaluate against lesser competition,

As for why I think Hounshell is better than Carrico is because I have eye's and it has nothing to do with the competition it what they can do physically. Hounshell is a much better athlete IMO.

My hate for Carrico is only as a DE, so remember that. I'm not hating on the kid I just think he's not anywhere near explosive and athletic enough to be a quality DE. I think he's best suited to be an OG.

Hounshell is a good versatile talent and you can never have to many of them. He can be a good DE or a good OT.

However I think Niklas is far superior to both.

I would love to see ND bring in both Niklas and Hounshell and while I think Niklas is a better as a DE and OT I would rather have him as a DE and have the other versatile DL/OL prospects to have there first opportunity as OL.

i agree that carrico is probably better suited to play guard and hounshell definately has a higher ceiling from an athleticism standpoint. also, the recruiting services are an absolute joke. i guess in the end i put more stock in carrico being battle tested but it isnt apples to apples because at this point there is no way carrico sees the defensive side of the ball. hopefully hounshelll and niklas both come to ND in addition to carrico because you can never have too many quality lineman. again thanks for the response!

Terry's news says 1]. that we really want this guy; and 2]. Kelly doesn't see any scholarship cap problem. So...go for it guys. And, note the DEFENSIVE orientation to the visit, which casts more slant on where Carrico and Springmann would likely play.

Tidbit on Hounshell from a Florida site:

First, muschamp is going to see chase today. second, here's a post relating to chase:

Hey guys just wanted to pass along some info on Chase. I met his brother Chad tonight who plays for UCF and took a few minutes to ask about his brother. He didnt tell me much other than his brother backed off with complete understanding from CWM based solely on staff change. He said he doesn't know whether he will fit into our more pro-style offense because right now is is a little small. The reason Notre Dame is so involved is because Brian Kelly recruited Chad to Cincinnati and had a good relationship with their family so Chase feels real comfortable with him. Also he said that their sister is a big time basketball player and that she is trying to go to Notre Dame so that would work out well for them. Chase will be announcing on signing day and Chad said anyone elses guess is as good as his right now. Go Gators!
