Today Notre Dame received their 21st verbal commitment when OLB Ishaq Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lincoln) committed to Notre Dame. Williams, an Army All-American, becomes the seventh commitment for Notre Dame along their defensive front seven.
"Ishaq is Irish," said Shaun Williams. "See you in South Bend."
Williams was a defensive end in high school, but he will play outside linebacker for the Irish. As an early enrollee he will begin taking classes on Monday, January 18.
The commitment of Williams to Notre Dame is huge in several regards. First, he is an extremely talented football player. Although his specialty is rushing the quarterback, he is a well-rounded football player, which the Cat linebacker must be. But his ability to get after the quarterback is a huge boost for Notre Dame.
In the commitments of both Williams and Anthony Rabasa, the Irish now have two Cat linebacker prospects that excel at rushing the quarterback. They will give Notre Dame, who finished No. 54 nationally in sacks in 2010, two players that should be able to help out very early on in their careers.
Williams, who is ESPN.com’s No. 29 player nationally, also gives Notre Dame the northeast’s top football player. This region is where Notre Dame will have to make a living in the future, as Brian Kelly and his staff look to rebuild the Irish into a nationally elite program. Williams provides Notre Dame with an elite talent from a crucial part of the country.
More to come later.
