Cam Newton Paid to go to Auburn?

For those of you who haven't seen it, a story broke late last night that someone claiming to represent Cameron Newton was soliciting a $200,000 payment from Mississippi St. in return from Cameron Newton signing there.

The second story also makes reference to the problems his father's church was having until recently which suddenly cleared up.

An NCAA investigation is ongoing, but Auburn has been aware of this since before the season and has continued to play him, putting their entire team in danger if he is ruled ineligible. Newton also apparently favoured Mississippi St., but decided to let his father choose where he went to school.

To my mind, where there is smoke there's fire. Seeing Auburn as a dirty program is sad, because I really like Gus Malzhan.

I would love to see the best SEC program this year be exposed for cheating. But I don't think there's enough to go on here... The guy was close to the Newtons, but there's zero proof he could deliver what he was selling or that they knew. Mississippi St. reported the incident to the SEC, which seems exactly like what they were supposed to do. The SEC then, presumably would have let its other member schools know that they'd better not play this guys game...

I guess it does warrant an investigation, but I don't think this story has legs.

I played at Blinn Junior College where Cam played...( more than a decade before) and there is ZERO reason for anyone to ever go to Brenham, TX (Blinn's location) except for two things...... ICE CREAM (Blue Bell) and Football. I can tell you stories about the D1 recruiters that came to our practices and games..... some really seedy stuff happens.... this one sounds pretty legit from what I have seen in my past.

Wonder what it will do to his Heisman campaign, the Heismanpundit seems to think it will hurt him if it drags on. Maybe Kellen Moore wins if Newton fades into oblivion over this.

That's probably a lot harder to prove as anyone can donate money to a church. If it's true, and if the people who did this have brains, it should be impossible for them to prove anything.

No matter the amount of $$$$ they all do this down here, semi pro football boys plain and simple. You know these guys are not at their school for the education. With that said I'm on record for a few changes at Notre Dame but not outright cheating. I wish the SEC would publish these guys major or line of study. I'll bet its all 'sports managemnet' or parks and recreation sprinkled with some general studies.

Nice article. The only thing I don't like is the part where he worships SEC football and says the stories about why Newton left Florida are irrelevant (because, cheating in the classroom should not effect your eligibility, right?).

Forget death penalty, if that article is even close to the mark then some of Auburn's key power players could be looking at some serious jail time.

NCAA Compliance requires a school to investigate itself first. Sounds like Auburn has already informally proclaimed its innocence.

If Auburn drags its heels, this could set up a USC situation compliance-wise.

IrishinSyria is right about jail time possibilities for power brokers. Usual scenario is to lawyer up, distance yourself, look to see if enough proof has been gathered and cut the best deal possible while biting the bullet.
