Good question, Mike. In addition to the variables mentioned above, add in number of scholarships and QB recruits for 2012. Clausen came because we did not recruit any QB the prior year, could be an EE and had the chance to start soon.

We don't know if the rumor about Dayne is true or not. If not, we would sure have a lot of QBs on scholarship in front of Mauk or Crow. Maybe some would convert to other positions.

Guys, I need some of your wisdom here. We have Crist still on the roster. We have a young kid [Rees] who has looked pretty good for a raw rookie, and who is apparently one of those types of coach's son/ gym rats that just knows how to do things. We have two more fairly highly regarded scout team freshmen, one of whom has been roundly praised by Kelly. And Montana is still on scholarship. I can see why we're chasing 2012s, but why are we chasing 2011s?? Believe me, I know that I'm an ignoramus on this area, but my long-winded question is an attempt to get help understanding this.

A few thoughts....

1. A dual threat QB makes this offense click. It improves the rushing attack ten fold with the defense accounting for the QB as a runner on every play. With the exception of perhaps Hendrix, there is no such commodity on this team.

2. I agree we are loaded at QB right now, that doesnt mean we can't add "TALENT." With respect to the 3 QB's brought it in, the only one that was hand picked by B Kells was MAssa, and I still believe he was a bit of a throw in deal to sweeten the pot for M. James (RIP).

3. Kelly needs to win now, or there will be no 2012 QBs. I am a firm believer at a QB in every recruiting cycle, right Mr. Weis? I hear the argument that you already have three freshmen from this year, but there is too much uncertainty at the position. I quite frankly do not have time to listen to people complain about how Montana this, and Hendrix that. Bring in some athletes and let the best player play?? If you do not like it, transfer to Tulsa!

Brissett, with your size and athleticism you would be a hoss in this offense!

Bottom line: he is 6'5" and runs a 4.5 forty. You want players like that on your team. If he's the best QB, he'll play and we'll be a better team for it. If not, I'm sure Kelly will find a way to utilize a kid like that.

Having too many players at one position and it's impact on recruiting is a common issue and it's more complicated with QBs, because you have less ability to predict how they will turn out. With a high end OL, DL or LB, you know they are huge and you should be able to teach them the mental aspect. With QBs, it's more mental than physical, and you don't know if you can teach them. Look at the NFL, they spend millions of dollars scouting QBs, and still more than half of first round picks are busts.

Maybe every QB we have on the roster fails to pan out and we need someone quick. Maybe one of them turns out to be a superstar, I don't know. Those decisions are based on information that's only really available to the coaching staff.

However, assuming we had confidence in the QBs on the roster I certainly wouldn't be going after anyone this year given that Dayne (potentially) has two years left, our (current) starter has three and a highly touted scout team QB has four. If Tommy and Hendrix pan out, one of them is going to transfer for sure (and that's ignoring Massa altogether).

All that happens if you over recruit as a position is you (ultimately) lose scholarships when one of them transfers. Sure, that opens up another spot in the future, but the net result is a younger less experienced team.

Gentlemen: thank you. Assuming what we may suspect about Dayne's fragility [or perhaps complete inability to get ready for 2011 in time, and thereby a lost career here] and a likely transfer by one of the frosh, your scenarios make sense. The enhanced "public" awareness of the press on Golson and Brissett seems eerily coincidental with the Crist injury and the de-commits to me. It would be interesting to be in Kelly's War Room when the recruiting discussions were happening over the last two weeks. ------- This discussion is the Irish Envy board at its best. Thanks again.

I don't know if çrist will return or ever reach. Is full potential while in South Bend. I do however know that if we can get a Golson or Brisset in your recruiting cycle then you take him no matter if you need him or not. We brought in three good QBs last year and we needed to because we had nothing in the pot to throw out in case of an emergenc.

I'm certainly not too impressed with Reeses arm strength. But the thing that makes the spread truly work is the QBs ability to escape the rush and his running ability. I'm not sure who has that package on the roster right now.

I don't get the Crist is transferring crap.

He has been the glue of his recruiting class. The guy is a great leader. For the past two years he has had injuries. He is the f'ing quarterback., literally and figuratively. If you listen to the interviews of the other players, you can tell the other players respect him. He loves ND and does not want to be elsewhere. IMHO he is not going anywhere. Kelly beams about his abilities. Dayne is clearly the best QB on the roster.

That is exactly why we are clearly pursuing other quarterbacks.

Does anyone know if Massa ran the Spread in HS?

Does anyone know if Massa ran the Spread in HS?

Reis did. Hendrix did not. I don't know about Massa. ND needs to get dual threat QB's, starting now. Brissett or Golson would be great to get. Is Kelly going to let Golson play basketball? IMHO, Kelly would not let Starling play baseball.

Massa ran the spread but he did not run more of just a pocket passer

Brissett on Notre Dame, Spurrier and playoffs

Brissett on Notre Dame, Spurrier and playoffs

*

Palm Beach Gardens (FL) Dwyer quarterback Jacoby Brissett just completed his third official visit, this one to Notre Dame.

“It’s one of the most historic schools in college football,” Brissett said. “It was one of the nicest campuses I’ve been to.”

Irish coach Brian Kelly told the 6-foot-5, 225-pound signal caller what he expects from Brissett if he were to play his college ball in South Bend.

“He just told me straight up he wanted me to come in and compete for the starting spot, and be able to run the offense he wants to be able to run because with this quarterback now they can’t really run the ball with the quarterback and stuff,” Brissett said. “He wants me to be able to come in and add that dimension to the team.”

Those words resonated with Brissett, especially at a program that was at the top of the college football landscape.

“That was a big thing for me to hear, going in and starting a quarterback and taking Notre Dame back to the level they were at before is pretty big,” said Brissett.

Brissett’s other official visits to date have been to Wisconsin and LSU. When asked if he had scheduled any other official visits Brissett admitted to not having a date, but did have another destination in mind.

“I don’t have them set up, but I’m thinking about taking a visit to South Carolina,” Brissett said. “You are playing for one of the greatest coaches to ever coach college football in Steve Spurrier. Playing for him, being an offensive coordinator and quarterback coach, having him leave a mark on you is second to none in college football.”

Florida State is another school heavily in the mix for Brissett. He has been on campus numerous times.

“The opportunity (at Florida State) is pretty much everywhere else,” Brissett said. “I feel with my skillset and the workout program we have I can go anywhere and compete for the starting spot and eventually get reps and hopefully get in the game.”

Brissett and his Dwyer teammates begin defense of their 4A Florida state title Friday night when they host Stranahan (Ft. Lauderdale, FL). In Brissett’s eyes it’s a clean slate for every team including his one.

“I don’t really think of it as a repeat because it’s over from last year. We just like the other teams. We’re gunning for them just like they are gunning for us. We are trying to go for a state title.”

Dwyer quarterback Jacoby Brissett talks on a wide variety of topics including his Notre Dame visit, coach Steve Spurrier, and his upcoming playoffs.

Sounds like Kelly is not exactly laying praise at the feet of his QBs to recruits.

Or just stating the obvious. Rees isn't a runner and Kelly wants his offense going 500 mph, which we can't do right now. Right now we have a 4 cylinder under the hood of our Corvette, Brissett or Golson would be the big block V8.

or, simpler than that: Kelly can't foresee the future so he has to cover as many bases as he can. He could easily see the chance that Dayne can't stay in one piece, that one frosh QB transfers, that Montana isn't skilled enough, and that he's left with only two functioning QBs period. In that scenario, getting another QB into the arsenal is good generalship. And telling the kid that he's got a real chance of playing [given that no one's an obvious perfect fit yet] ain't [Urban] lying.

Its what I have been saying all along, BKells wants to runner at QB to compliment the drop back passers.

Its not very complicated....

I don't he could play right away, but down the road this guy could be very explosive in Kelly's offense.

What we really need is Michael Vick. What a BAMF. I say we can pull an Auburn, turn a blind eye to his ineligibility as a multi-year NFL veteran and pay him more than the Eagles. Recruiting closed.

His first pass last night might be the most impressive throw I have ever seen. He threw the ball from the 4 yard line and hit his receiver in stride at the Skin's 35 yardline-- 61 yards in the air.

Vick is a ridiculous athlete, he just humiliated the Redskins last night.

Sadly, talents like that are once in a generation, and I don't think we could combine any two QBs on the roster or going through recruitment to come up with a skill set like his.
