If we beat Utah, is it our greatest victory in 10 years?

especially if Utah wins against TCU tonight.

Yea, if they lose tonight and they lose to us, they could very well drop out of the top 25. And we have beat a lot of teams that ended up dropping out because of us, so no, especially given the context of the season. UCLA or Michigan St in 05 and 06 would be bigger.

But regardless, it would be a huge win. Give us a good shot at bowl eligibility and it would be great for the team to win one on senior day for once.

Even though they were clearly declining, the win over FSU in 2002 was nice. Maybe Michigan in 2005 due to their ranking. Michigan in 2004 after the BYU game too.

IMO, it would be the biggest ND win in the last 10 years (if Utah wins today). That said, I give ND a 0% chance of a win next week if Utah loses today and a 10% chance of an ND win if Utah wins today.

Call me a pessimist or a Negative Ned but thats the way I see it. This Irish team is sprialing out of control. I hate to say this but I'm starting to wonder if the so called pundits are right about ND (no speed, no talent on D except for Teo, etc). I was at the game last week (read - without the benefit of replays and analysis) and I saw #3 outrun the ND defense consistently. A QB outrun and out-physical the ND defense and a LB outrun the entire ND offense on an INT return. Hence my prediction of a lopsided Utah win next Saturday.

Just curious what you guys think.

I think it would be a toss-up between beating Utah and the suddenly rare win over Navy in 2008. J/K

Maybe ND will catch Utah on a let down. FSN Rocky Mountain was showing interviews last night with Utah players. One of the lineman was asked "looking beyond this week's big game for a moment, are you looking forward to the opportunity to play in South Bend next weekend?". His response...."No big deal. We need to beat TCU. If we beat TCU I think we'll be in great shape in terms of running the table".

Wow! It just tells you that it's been a while since ND was truly relevant....the current generation thinks it's no big deal to play in SB.

He has a point though.

Did you mean MSU in 2006, not 2005?

Anyway, MSU was 4-8 in 2006. UCLA was 7-6...so a win over Utah would blow those victories out of the water.

Some other games that are in the discussion:

Purdue 2000
Maryland 2002
Michigan 2002
FSU 2002
Michigan 2004
Tennessee 2004

Look at Willingham represent!!!

Probably our biggest was 2004 Michigan. We were coming off of an embarrassing loss to BYU and we beat a Michigan team that eventually ended up in the Rose Bowl.

Might have been in the discussion if not for their destruction today.

They'll still end up no worse than 10-3 (assuming we beat them) and ranked.

With our collection of wins over the years, beating Utah is like winning a BCS game.

10-3 won't be ranked for Utah. After today they'll be in the teens. Non-AQs drop like rocks in rankings.

On a side note, Navy just dropped 76 on ECU :p

Navy is so schizophrenic. And we always seem to get their best.

Rather, ECU dropped 35 on Navy.

...based on where the Utah program has been the last few years, and where we've been...I'd say yea.

We had some great comeback wins with BQ at the helm, but strictly looking at utah's rank, and the fact that its late in the year, it'd be a huge win.

Now that Utah got Shilacked (thanks Mr. President), I'm not liking our chances...I was hoping to catch them flat after a big win...but now they are going to be angry and fired up...needing to prove something...I just don't see it.

...But I'll be parked in fron tof the TV with equal parts hope and profanity...

In my opinion, a win doesn't count as a "big win" unless it leads to something more. Great we beat Michigan in '04, and finished 6-6.

It would be a great win over Utah if it propelled this team to a blowout of Army, and great team effort vs. USC and a bowl win. Otherwise, it is another example of the random inconsistency this program has had for 15 years.

I believe that we have been very consistant in losing to teams ranked in the top 25. A win against Utah would be huge because it would put us in a bowl game and get coach Kelly the extra practices that he threw away against Tulsa. Would it be the biggest in 10 years, maybe.

This thread makes me sad. Even 10 years ago, a thread with this title would have been unthinkable. Not only would it be a HUGE upset, it would be the biggest win we've had since a BQ-led team beat highly-ranked Tennessee on the road, would be the first time we've won on Senior day in a while, first time we've beaten a ranked team in while....

All of these facts show how badly the program has fallen off. :(

It is sad and I agree with you. I think we are in the process of turning this thing around.., only time will tell. As for winning against Utah..., Sadly, this would be the biggest win in recent memory for sure. In years actually. We have not played a ranked opponent and won in a very long time. I actually forgot almost what it feels like to upset somebody. I would be elated to get a victory this Saturday and enjoy the moment.

That was my first time seeing the Irish in South Bend. I remember the flight from Portland to Chicago, thinking, "Wow!! We just lost to BYU. My first game at Notre Dame Stadium, and we are probably going to get housed." Plus, my buddy (a HUGE Michigan fan) went to the game with me. He was, of course, decked out in his maize and blue. I was really impressed with how gracious everyone was to him, about the win.
