From II:

IrishIllustrated.com - Kelly: Playing hard isn't good enough anymore

Quarterback Dayne Crist did not suffer a concussion against Michigan in the first series of the game, but he did take a rather nasty blow to the face.

"He had swelling in the left side of his face when he hit (the ground)," said Kelly of Crist's 19-yard run, which occurred several plays prior to the opening touchdown. "He kind of hit the ground and a helmet hit him at the same time. He picked up some swelling after the game. It was more of a contusion that got him a little bit off-balance."

Although Crist was lucid and speaking logically to the doctors and trainers, his vision was blurred.

"It wasn't a concussed situation, but he wasn't cleared," Kelly said. "We took a look at him (Sunday) and he was really clear."

Once Crist was back to his old self, he took his game to another level.

"At the end of the day, the evaluation of it is he grew up in the second half," Kelly said. "He was poised in the pocket that he hadn't shown (up) to that point. He really matured in the second half of this football game."

Kelly's last statement is exactly what I was thinking during the game. Crist looked like a different QB in the second half. I think (with the performance of the back up QB's) Crist finally started to believe that he was "the guy" and that this is his team. Granted this is probably what led him to take a risk on the interception rather than just checking down to Allen. If this young man continues to grow this much each week (and stay healthy) we are going to win a lot of football games.

I'm not saying Dayne's injury prone, but it's a bit frustrating that he can't consistently stay on the field. Kelly's offense won't completely take off until he's got a quarterback who can run. I know Dayne's got the ability to do this, but we're really limited by the lack of depth.

Reading that top post made me realize, yeah he missed a couple of throws long, but he really did show up and look like the leader we need in the 2nd half, that bomb to rudy from the endzone, amazing. If he would have won that game for us in the last seconds, his legacy would have been solidified after 2 games starting.

I just hope he's not injury prone.

Sounds like the Tyson quote someone has on here. "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." Crist took the punch in the mouth and came back stronger. I am very pleased they took proper precautions to make sure there was not a concussion and do not fault Crist for that. Next time he will channel Rocky Balboa and say "cut it Mick!"

The whole team took a punch in the mouth and came back stronger. This game was one where the team will be stronger because of it. I bet the back-ups start upping their game too.

Gosh..its terrifying to think of ND without Crist! I mean...what if he gets hurt? We ARE screwed!... Man I just hope/pray he stays healthy...cause with him we can go far I believe.

From another point of view, I bet the back ups are re-thinking their role right now on this football team. Up to the Michigan game they were probably practicing like back-ups, and I would be willing to bet they are putting forth the effort of a starter now.
