lol good pick up. Just shows how little due diligence some people put in their analysis.
Phil Steele ranks ND's schedule as 17th toughest, between #15 Alabama, #16 PSU, and #18 Florida, and #22 Oklahoma.
ND doesn't face an Alabama or Florida on the schedule but there no New Hampshire, Coastal Carolina, Norfolk St, Samford, Youngstown St, Massachusetts, Idaho St, South Dakota St, James Madison, Weber St, Presbyterian, Sacramento St, or Florida A&M.
Steele Power Poll ranks ND & opponents as:
#14 USC
#24 Stanford
#27 Notre Dame
#37 BC
#38 MSU
#39 Michigan
#40 Pit
#43 Utah
#53 Tulsa
#56 Navy
#67 Purdue
#73 Western Michigan
#99 Army
ND has the potential this year of beating anyone on the schedule. But only Army and Western Michigan are gimmies, 10 of the 12 likewise
could take the ND of 2009.
ND doesn't need a Top 10 defense to run the table. Dropping the 25.9 ppg given up last year by 6 ppg would drop ND from the 63rd best Scoring Defense to the 23rd Best. Last year ND gave up 14 points on Special Teams Kick Returns for scores and another 13 points in Overtime scoring. They make up about 40% of the objective. Eliminating the ineffective blitz burns would cover the rest. There will be less blown assignments this year and more effective tackling. I don't anticipate a stifling defense but simply reducing the mental errors and sloppy tackling would go a long way. A disciplined defense will stop Navy's ground game. The D is stronger, quicker, older, and deeper. The communication should be vastly improved.
I except a bigger improvement in Defense and Special Teams efficiencies than in the Offense. There's more room for improvement in those areas.
