i wish the kid the best if he does leave, but if he does it's not a very big loss.
this kid was completely counterproductive last season.
any time we needed a big catch from a wr he always dropped passes.
i think he did some promotion work for Butterfinger during the offseason.

But seriously,It's not a loss.

Yes, very good point.

I could totally tell in the three games that he played as a true freshman that he has terrible hands and would never have contributed. Boy, it was clear in those three games he played as a true freshman that he just couldn't get it done.

Very good point.

He was a FRESHMAN. You guys are awfully quick to dismiss a kid who has played one year. Always dropped passes? Some of you need a reality check.

He was a talented kid that didn't mesh well with the team. I wish him the best. I hope he beats SC up a few times.

I like our depth at WR. Toma, Riddick, Goodman, TJ, Jackson, and Smith are all solid.

If you're going to criticize the kid before you know why he left, keep it to yourself. No one else wants to read your stupid unwarranted opinion

See I wouldn't judge him off what he did as a freshamn. My gripe was he's not willing and wanting to compete for a spot.

He is a kid with potential despite what some of you have said (sour grapes?). But he has obviously not stepped up to the plate. TJ has passed him on the depth chart and i don't recall BK saying anything about him during camp. Also, his drama queen performance last season "I'm leaving...I'm not" has worn thin. Best of luck to him, he may yet turn into an impact player on a team with a bit less depth at wide out. I think Bennett Jackson brings a similar skill set to the team and HAS impressed BK.

This really doesn't hurt ND all that much.

I don't mind people saying it probably doesn't hurt much because of our depth. I believe in the guys we have there.

I take exception to the accusations that he was a baby, drama queen, or that he wasn't any good anyway. We don't know what was going on internally. That's how it's supposed to be. If he was such a cancer, why would Kelly try to keep him from transferring?

Think what you think, but please post on the high road.

Coach Kelly confirmed Shaq is no longer on the team and has been given a release to transfer.

One more thing: OldManMike had it right. The kid is just trying to make it through life. It gets (incredibly) old criticizing every player who doesn't drop lock step into one’s particular fantasy.

The next stop is a sort of cult of the personality. We need this player to win; that is when you have some incredibly non-productive players taking up a starting position from time to time.

With the current system, they will just develop and reload. Who doesn’t agree that linebacker productivity is improved under this regime? With wide receivers, there are several freshmen, (Smith, Jackson, and Collinsworth), who will be able to step up, as well as those already on the roster.

the kid obviously just couldnt cut it.
case in point being he saw no playing time last year, and when he did he dropped a lot of passes, even as a freshman.he is even quoted as saying as he wanted to transfer last season.
now,he has a chance to make an impression on a new coach and a WR pass-happy offense, and he just didnt get it done, at best he was scout team material.
this is exactly why *'s on high school player ratings mean shit.

i hold no ill will for the kid...hopefully he plays for someone and does well.
but this kid was obviously not in love with ND like we all are.I, and many of you I know would give your right nut to play for the scout team, and he whines of playing time. That is primadonna attitude at its finest.

Yeah you could feel this coming too much expected by the young man of himself to sit the bench, I wish him well and most likely will see him on the field against southern cal. Good luck except against Notre Dame.

I only hope his decision isn't ONLY football related. I have no idea if there is personal things going on or whatever. I just hope he understands the NFL is a long shot and passing up on a Notre Dame education is far more of an impact than not cracking the two deep.

I don't care what the reason for his leaving might be. I wish him all the best and hope he finds success and happiness no matter where he goes.

If I remember correctly he and Byron Moore were good friends. Shaq tried hard to get Moore to come to Notre Dame, I thought we would get him. Interestingly enough they both are transferring from the schools they signed with.

Really Moore is leaving USC?

Before I state facts that I'm unclear about, I understand Shaq has to sit out a year but does his scholarship become available immediately? I was under the understanding that it did.

If he transfers to a school that has yet to start classes (Probably a quarter school) he can play all of this year.

I don't think that's true. If he wants to play this year, I thought he had to go to an FCS school.

regardless, he has to sit the entire 2010 season... Not sure about the scholarship, but my guess is its available for the current '11 recruiting class (counting towards the 85)

This is correct, the only way you can play in the same season you xfer is to drop down a division.

Who told you that? Regardless of sport, in the NCAA you must sit out one year if you transfer. This rule is in effect to discourage kids from making impulsive decision and transferring every which way as the wind blows.

EDIT: There are certain exceptions though. However, in Shaq's case none that I know of apply.

Any division II school does not require a year of probation, (from Div I or within Div II). He cannot play anywhere in Div I in 2010. He can play all of 2011 if he transfers to a school that has yet to start class. BK gave Shaq an open release, so he could go anywhere in Div I. All articles have stated that he is still attending classes. As soon as he withdraws, his scholarship is available.

It's too bad he didn't find what he was looking for at ND, but I wish him luck (as long as he doesn't go to U$C). It makes me feel pretty good about our talent at WR if he couldn't crack the top 6.

I stand by my post 100%. I take exception to you implying that I suggested he "wasn't any good anyway".

I was as jacked as any Irish fan when Weis landed Shaq. I think he has real potential. I also know that last year he was PUBLICLY discussing transferring and in fact aired his grievances on facebook. Then he comes back and apparently is over his homesickness until he is beaten out for a spot in the 2 deeps. If that is not prima donna behavior, I don't know what is.

The kid needs to grow up a little, but he IS a 19 year old kid, so there is plenty of time for him. I wish him well. These 4 and 5 star recruits (not Shaq Evans in particular) are bound to develop inflated egos during the recruiting process. What with coaches making a million bucks lining up to have their turn to flatter and impress them, what 17 year old wouldn't develop a sense of entitlement? But some kids adapt when they figure out they are not "the man" on their new team. Some buckle down and compete for playing time, others, want instant gratification. Unfortunately, I have to count Shaq Evans in the latter group.

I don't think my post was a low blow and furthermore, I don't think you have any business lecturing people about the "high road".

Didn't mean to imply that you did. I was lumping several posts together in my head. Others did.

That's fine. It's nothing personal. I'm in favor of not being personal...in our posts about each other and about the players. It simply rubs me the wrong way when we make assumptions and bag on a young kid. There could be a thousand things going on that we don't know about. People are making lots of assumptions and we just don't know.

Even if people are right about him, I still don't want to bag on him. Want to talk about the pros? It's a totally different ballgame. But I remember being 19...things weren't always that clear.

I certainly don't think your post was ridiculous. I just think we need to be careful.

I wonder what the thread would look like if he had gone to USC only to transfer to Notre Dame. Would we be talking about how fickle he is, or would we be praising a kid for doing what's best for himself?

Evans position coach was Alford who is considered to be ND's best recruiter. One who relates well to the athletes. He was Evans primary contact not Kelly. Alford was the mentor.

The Position Coach tells the OC who of his players are ready to play.

The Offensive Coordinator picks the personnel he wants to suit the plays he calls. If the OC likes the way the #8 WR runs the pattern HE can plug that player in.

Kelly has overall say and reads out the Depth Chart but it is the product of at least 3 coaches.

It's a motivational tool.

Evans probably has a better grasp of who will return to the team next year and who won't then we do. PT next year wasn't his concern. He wanted the PT - now. Not next month, not next week. Now. He apparently didn't earn it on the practice field and now he's gone.

Joe Montana didn't earn it on the practice field either. It took injuries and lack of execution by others to get his shot. And unlike Lou Gehrig, Montana didn't stay #1 when he got to play. He was a roller coaster on the field. The difference was Joe Montana stayed to get his shot.

I have not been a fan of Nate Montana as #2 QB. His community college performance wasn't good to say the least. But he persisted as a walk on, and a did the incredible thing of leaving school for a trip to the "minors" to get practice time and playing time, and today was awarded a scholarship that came available from a more gifted athlete.

Kudos to Kelly for a very positive message to his players.

I find it sad when any of them leave ND without a degree. He had a much bigger prize in his grasp. I hope Evan finds his happiness.
