Hostile vs. Family Friendly Environment

I was listening to ESPN Radio here in Dallas, and they were on the discussion about if they want the new Rangers stadium to be hostile or family friendly.

there definition was this...

Hostile: being rude to everyone that was from the opponents team, and just making the whole experience suck for visiting teams.

Family Friendly: everyone cheers when the "right" time is to cheer and you just sit and enjoy your hot dog and drink.

my question is which would you rather want for an ND game?

i would want the most hostile environmental that i could possibly choose for a visitor, even though i know most visitors love our friendliness, but then again i would rather win games.

while also keeping a friendly environment for the fans but making it hectic for the opposing players

We have always been a smash-mouth classy program. Our work ethic on the field should get the job done. Our mouths can do nothing jawing off to other fans.

I want a family environment. To me, this encompasses what it means to be a fan of Notre Dame. A loud crowd can certainly still be achievable, regardless of the atmosphere's stance towards visiting fans. And then, this allows other fans to see the light, rendering them likely to hop on the ND ban wagon which will be coming soon. Their money will be good for our program in the future.

no doubt about every thing u said. heard really bad things about gainsville, from uf fans. i think we should be above thugs and hulligans. but still rock the stadium when needed.

Come on in, sit down, watch your team have their hat handed to them and then we'll invite you back to do it again.

yeah fuck em, coming into our house. best believe I will be the first one throwing sunflower seeds at their fat heads for wearing contraband. cheer for the other team, that definitely warrants some shit talking and maybe a few mustard stains.

especially those fuck head Charger fans going to a Raiders home game. you are just asking for it.

Peace out, brotha. Flare up a fatty and chill. Until you take your seat in the stadium, that is. Then jump up and down and scream your ass off. No kicking, though. No crude taunting. No fighting, no biting. Let the players handle the smash-mouth ... it's their job, not yours.

The last time I was on campus for a game I was stretched out under a tree on the south quad (I miss the majestic, elder elms) trying to catch a few winks since I'd driven 8 hours straight from Minneapolis to hit South Bend at 6 AM. I was meeting a classmate and his family at 10 AM and had a few hours to kill. An older (not older than me, perhaps, but you get the picture) USC couple were strolling by just as a group of student pipers came by.

I overheard the wife telling her husband "They must be The Irish Guard we've heard about" I chuckled and then caught their attention. "They are NOT the Irish Guard – you'll know them when you see them! They are just some spirited and adventurous students having fun."

I recommended that they hit the K of C for a nosh and gave them directions to the Grotto and Basilica. We chatted, we laughed. They left with smiles on their faces, impressed with the campus, the traditions and the friendly students and fans.

I don't imagine they were smiling when they left. The Irish won ...

Be loud, be passionate and cheer for your team. No need to be rude to opposing fans. Telling an opposing fan to fuck off or what not doesn't make the crowd look hostile. It makes it look like a bunch of jackasses. That's just my opinion I wouldn't want that done to me so I wouldn't do it to others

Wait, "The new Rangers St.".... as in The Ballpark in Arlington??? The Rangers can't possibly be planning a new ballpark already... that place is less than 20 years old isn't it???

i agree with KPENN on this one, it should be hostile for opposing TEAMS not the fans, if anything they should be treated well for coming to our stadium where there are less seats available for them than at their home venue. but yes ND's noise volume needs to go WAY up.

when they were talking i think they meant, "new" as in under new ownership. and they are planning on doing alot of renovations. Because the new owners want to have the toughest stadium to play in, so they got into the discussion on how the game day experience should be.

Yeah, let's see if we can be cruder than Miami fans or drunker and more obnoxious than LSU fans, throw fish and urine like Georgia Tech supporters or be as classless as the Stanford band.

This is Notre Dame. Where excellence is the goal. Not the gutter.

Do you know the words to the Victory March? Did you ever really listen to them? Or read them?

Rally sons of Notre Dame:
Sing her glory and sound her fame,

...

Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame,
Wake up the echoes cheering her name,
Send a volley cheer on high,
Shake down the thunder from the sky.

It's about us. Not them.

It's not JEER JEER at Old State U. like a redneck jackass.

There's nothing docile about Cheering HER NAME nor Shaking Down The Thunder with a volley CHEER on high.

I've seen less than 5,000 Irish fans rock Death Valley while the ND players declawed LSU's Fighting Tigers ON THE FIELD.

I've seen the same number clad in green march into Doak Campbell Stadium chanting "HERE COME THE IRISH" then the ND players took the heart out of the Nole players ON THE FIELD.

And I've seen 80,000 ND fans root their team on to victory with enthusiasm and sportsmanship and welcome the guests to ND's campus.

After the FSU win in '02 I was alone and trying to find the shuttle bus stop to get back to the parking deck for the long drive home. I asked directions at a tailgate of about a dozen middle aged alumni and got invited to sit down while I waited. Solid supporters of their program. I spent the next hour with them talking football and eating some of the best Alaskan king crab legs I've ever had. One guy noted, "The worse part about losing to you guys is, you're so damn nice. Your players, your coaches, and your fans. You not like those jerks from the SEC that act like pro wrestling badass wannabes. You folks do your school credit. ... And I'm a Baptist!"

When I got to the car I made a wrong turn looking for the highway and ended up driving past a bunch of fraternity houses. When two guys on a corner saw my ND hat they hurled their half empty (from the sound of the thuds) beer cans at my car while screaming obscenities. I just hollered, "Great Game!" and drove on.

I'm by no means trying to make it sound like I want ND fans to be just extrememly rude or anything. I just agreed with NDOM because or how he put it.

All I am getting at is that during a majority of the games I have went to, I've been yelled at by more of ND fans to "shut up and sit down" than opposing ones. Personally if I wanted to watch the game sitting down and eating popcorn i would have just stayed home.

Personally I would rather it be extremely loud to where you can't hear yourself think, not being rude to other fans. But to distract the opposing players, that's what I put in my original post,

i would rather win games.

I'd prefer Family Friendly over hostile. I bemoan the glorification of the demeaning of fellow man. Just as most of you wouldn't like to feel threatened at a game, you shouldn't do unto others. Like many have already said, it is up to the players to make the visiting team uncomfortable on the field. By shear volume of noise, and thousands united in song, that adds an element of discomfort to visiting teams. Opposing teams, and fans can be made intimidated by ways other than crass behavior. Just my 2 cents.
