Per ISD:
Reports from the Chicago Tribune and the South Bend Tribune say that Irish senior tight end Mike Ragone was hospitalized after Wednesday’s practice.

According to the reports, Ragone was taken to a local hospital to be treated for ‘heat illness.’ The 6-foot-4, 245-pound Ragone was kept overnight for observation, but has since returned to campus. Ragone, who is fighting for the backup tight end job behind Kyle Rudolph, did not participate in Thursday’s practice is expected to be held out until trainers and doctors deem him recovered.

Rudolph has missed time early in training camp with a sore hamstring, although it is not considered serious. Senior Bobby Burger was running with the first team on Wednesday with sophomore Tyler Eifert getting second-team reps.

Makes you wonder about the necessity of 'not removing helmets' at all during the practice hours.

This kind of thing happens.

Like Irish4 I have had the same thing when playing High School football. It's not fun and kind of scary but he should be fine. I'm sure they're just being cautious as this has been kind of a hot button issue of late.

He should be fine. I'd like to think he's a better receiving tight end than Burger. I believe Burger is more of a blocking tight end.

Glad he's ok and good to hear that its just heat, this is part of the re/structuring boys-its going to get hot in the kitchen. Its needed that they go to the edge-just dont want any tragedies-thank the Lord he's ok. It may sound cruel but they have to push and be pushed. We've had enough tragedies this year- get well Ragone.

I'm going to assume some folks aren't very aware of the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

They are both very different, as one is actually the early stages of the other. I assume Ragone had suffered from heat exhaustion. Does anyone know if he had a heat stroke? Here's a link to familiarize yourself with the two: Heat Stress

I'm really pulling for this kid...injuries...and of cource the other stuff. I still remember when he chased down that CB from behind...YouTube - und.com Play of the Game - Washington State

I love how the announcer said at the end...."how about the rundown by Dave Ragone" ''

I FUCKING HATE announcers who cant get a fucking name right. PISSES ME OFF. Its their damn jobs for shit sake and they still screw it up. And its ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS Notre Dame that they butcher the names on. FUCKERS!!!!! Learn how to do your jobs.

Are they really prohibited from removing their helmets? As a former player I find that utterly senseless. What are they, the Junction Boys?

Thanks for the link. Good stuff.

WNDU, SBT and the wire services carry essentially the same stuff, undefefined "heat illness". It was reported that the team doctor lowered his body temp and he was later hospitalized for observation.

Notre Dame TE released from hospital
Aug. 12, 2010
CBSSports.com wire reports

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame tight end Mike Ragone has been released from a hospital after spending the night to recover from heat illness suffered at practice.

Ragone was treated by a team doctor and trainer who lowered his body temperature at the team's facility in South Bend, Ind., following Wednesday's practice. He was taken to the hospital after that for observation.

Ragone missed practice Thursday and a team spokesman says it's not certain when he might be back on the field. The Irish have two practices Friday during what has been a hot first week of preseason drills.

...

Follow up reports noted he was held out of practice Thursday and would miss the two a day sessions today.

Don't know if Anchorman has any basis for his comment about being prohibited from removing helmets. He didn't say if he was talking about ND or HS football.

The NCAA has regs that deal with acclimation to practice rigors which is why the players don't start out in pads doing two a days the first day. They work up to it, whether they need it or not.

The trainers and medical staff are on the field and dealt with the situation unlike Bear Bryant refusing to allow medical staff to get involved at the Junction. That SOB should have gone to jail for abuse.

I have a hard time feeling bad for him... what was the weather like in South Bend? I hope he is ok obviously he is part of the family, but come on, I live in Texas... it is 104 degrees here and I drive by multiple numbers of kids of all ages out there in full pads in the heat of the day ( not a the pace of Kelly's practices) but come on.... hydrate... eat right... and play.

I understand your point, but something obviously wasn't right. I would imagine that he was properly hydrated like the rest of team. There could have been other health concerns.

I live in Fort Wayne, IN but I have been in Cincy the past few days and the heat index was 113 degrees, and I heard it was about as equally hot back here.

So give Ragone a little bit of a break, you can never be too concerned with the health of a player.

I hope he is ok, and I agree you can never too safe with the well being of a player but the coach in me says either he has a condition that would have caused this ( not found in the physical) or he didn't take care of himself with nutrition, rest etc. I see a first rate Tight End with Mike and want to see him succeed, but time is running out.

Per Brian Hamilton, Chicago Breaking Sports, Notre Dame's Kelly: Banks out, Ragone improving - Chicago Breaking Sports

8/13
On Ragone's recovery from "heat illness" Wednesday: "Mike's doing pretty good. he was out here today, he's bounced back well. It's hot out. It's hot out everywhere in the country. We've got to be cautious and make sure we take the proper steps to getting him back here. Hopefully we'll do that here in the next couple days."

On the system in place for extremely hot days: "We have established protocol. With heat index, we have prescribed times where we take water and take our helmets off. It's important to follow those protocols. That's why I've been doing it for 20 years. Sometimes you just have a situation like that and you hope that things work out. Mike's bounced back nicely, and we have a great training staff, and things worked out good."
