could be worse. in all honestly, I'd rather have Haden than Bob Davie, and I'd certainly take Mayock over a lot of people. I still wish it could have been Tony Roberts, though!

When do we ever get a break? Numerous nd alums available and they get another rival to comment on our play. Pisses me off. Y not celebrate nd and fire up the fan base instead of people who will boost other teams? He'll be better than Haden but still wouldve liked to see theisman or the bus in the booth.

Notre Dame and NBC don't want anyone affiliated with the University. They think it would make the analyst lost his objectivity, and they don't want to seem like they are promoting bias. I can understand completely where they are coming from.

Yea it was never going to be a ND guy, and i can understand that, For anyone who is a cubs fan out there imagine Ron Santo in the ND booth if he was an ND guy.. scary, not saying that if they hired an ND guy he would yelp and stuff. What about that chick that does the 11 am games on espn 2... jk

This is exactly why they shouldhave gone with Joe Theismann.

Seems like an OK choice. An improvement over Haden at least. Would really have loved to have brought in Aaron Taylor.

I love this hire. I don't think you could've found anyone more familiar with what excellent college football looks like, he's decent on NFLN, and I like how he shoots straight.

I'd be shocked if you ever hear any BC love coming from Mayock's call and he should be able to really break down play by watching tape week-after-week and pointing out progressions, problems, and projections. Haden was brutal when the Irish played SC and his jumping at the SC AD job just shows how much he loves his school, but he should have never been calling ND games in the first place.

Well done NBC... now re-think cancelling FNL and we'll be good.

I'm pickin' up your sarcasm?

I'm pretty sure you're agreeing with my statement, but if you do think they should have gone with Joe, I can understand that. Just because they want to avoid the presence of bias, doesn't mean there would have actually been any. It would just be ammo for the haters.

It still rubs me the wrong way that NBC and the university do not want an alum in the booth. It basically means that no "ND guy" is capable of being objective.

And what would be so wrong if an ND guy was a little slanted? I'm talking about having someone who gets super excited when the Irish make a big play, more so than someone who refuses to say bad things about the team.

Even the biggest homer will say bad things about their favorite team. What the booth needs is energy, excitement and entertainment value. Heck I'd take all of that with a little sacrifice of "objectivity" "professionalism" or whatever else you want to call it.

It just seems like a dumb argument that the university and NBC are making. Especially given the god awful broadcast team they've been putting out there for a dozen years.

"Hey our analysis is stale, boring, completely unenthusiastic....but we are sooo objective and not being homers to Notre Dame at all."

We can blame the poor product on the field for not bringing in killer ratings, but the broadcast team definitely is hurting the numbers too.

And I understand that having a non-homer and objective guy in there is appreciable in order to pick up the non-fans who typically tune in to boost the ratings, but those people will tune in anyway if it's a big game.

What happens is they'll tune into the big game and completely and utterly hate the broadcast team, you know, just like the majority of ND fans do. How is this a good policy?

Sometimes you need a little edge out there. By all indications, Maycock will not provide any of that.

He's a safe pick, who won't mess with the stale broadcasting system that's in place.

NBC/ND were looking for someone who wasn't too famous, had a good grasp of football, wasn't rebellious in anyway, and I'm sure they were looking for a Catholic too.

And they got their man.

We're still stuck with the worst play-by-play man in the history of American sports broadcasting and he'll now be paired with another suit who will probably be a good color guy but offer little else besides breaking each play down like Haden did.

Above all I want is some excitement in the booth! Why can't we have that? Even Alex Flannagan looks depressed out there on the field!

She can stay though, I like her.

Anyone know if he will be performing on-air air-humps at halftime if the Irish are up huge? I heard this was in the contract negotiations and I hadn't heard what the final agreement was.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>

Why should ND games on NBC provide the only broadcast team around that is "objective". That certainly isn't ABC/ESPN's goal. What I heard from Haden & Hammond-eggs more often than not is how the Irish "got away" with some minor break just after getting boned by the refs a dozen times.

Basically there are 2 types of viewers for NBC telecasts: Fans & Haters. Go with a broadcast team that the Fans want to hear & ignore the haters... they're just passing by until they see ND is playing well, then they turn the channel. Who cares if they think there is bias?

Mayock Stated his career as broadcaster in local Philadelphia suburban radio in the mid 1980s after he was done with the Giants. he worked in commercial real estate as a developer. He moved to NJN doing sideline reporting of Rutgers and Princeton games.

He went to ESPN where he did a variety of sports before joining CBS in 1996 as Broadcaster. he has done the Orange bowl Tostitos bowl and at least one National Championship game.

He is as objective as the best of them and will dio his best to give a fair shake to either team.

I have heard him ravage BC when appropriate. So expect no worse from him.

I agree with your analysis...

I think you let them off the hook a little though...the damned broadcast is Notre Dame Saturday or some crap like that....who in the hell do these pin heads think are watching...

NBC and ND created a ND Freaking broadcast, and all the $$$$ that goes into branding it...how absolutely stupid is it to then get mired down in not having an ND alum in the booth...I'm not saying it would have to be one...but for the love of Pete, there are tremendously capable ND alum/broadcasters out there...to simply ignore that talent for objectivity's sake is just mind numbingly STUPID given the Brand on the flippin broadcast.

Man I want to drop an F-bomb ridden string of expletives right now...

As choices go I like Mayock just fine...He has some of the same qualities as Theisman...he'll terrorize the refs for calls like they made last year, he'll be hard on everybody, ND and opponents. He knows the game...could be worse I guess.

the sad part is that product could be so much better if folks would embrace the fact that this is an ND product...and use the best talent to push the product...

Sweet hit by the Deke-ster back in '98. Great win on the road during BD's 8 game win streak.

What I could never figure out about Davie is why he had good seasons during even numbered years & disasters during odd numbered years.
