To quote NeuteredDomer

any other thoughts on what can only be described as the immaculate reception (of recruits)

To quote Aaron Lynch "with all the guys were bringing in, WERE GUNNA BE BEAST"

How will this affect 2011 and beyond? (Please play the song while writing your reply)

Gentlemen: although I agree with the wait-till-signing-day caution, I believe that what the coaching staff has now proven is that they are elite recruiters and we have nothing to worry about in that category about them. --- I did some bone-head logging of the recruiting situation of the top 75 programs in the nation, and although none of this is brilliant, you guys might find a few things of interest here. [lots of you will know all this already].

A) one month ago, when ND had 11 commitments, it could be argued that only Texas, Stanford, Oklahoma, Ohio State, and [marginally] USC were moving at a higher quality pace than Staff Kelly. Alabama, Georgia, Nebraska, Florida, and LSU were close to us. On a quick glance at that, it seems pretty rare air to be traveling in.

B) one month later, today, using the same criteria [numbers of recruits committed and their star ratings], it could be argued that only Texas, Ohio State, Stanford, Alabama, and Oklahoma are moving at higher quality paces and that ND has closed the gap on Oklahoma and Stanford at least [Texas is on a different planet with their crowd of 22 recruits, 18 of which committed before recruiting commits even got started with most other programs].

C) the picture this year is of the football world waiting patiently while one Monster [Texas] feeds, and then rushing to the trough. --- I'm going to give a few actual numbers for you to muse about, should they bring up any thoughts: these numbers are going to be in this form

School; # Commits; 5*s; 4*s; 3*s; 2*s or NR
1.Tex;22;7;9;6;0
2. OSU;17;2;10;5;0
3. ALA; 16;2;8;6;0
4. Stan;20;0;9;11;0
5. OU;18;0;10;8;0
6. ND;16;1;7;7;1
7. UGA;15;1;7;6;1
8. LSU;15;2;4;6;3
9. OKS;17;1;6;9;1
10.UNC;16;1;4;9;2

--- My amateurish view of this is that, given that he's "selling" a program which has been no better than "average" for several years, and that there is a whole new [read: unproven] staff and system coming in, this elite performance [sustained over a long period of time] by Staff Kelly should be met with awe. Frankly, this just seems impossible to me, that someone can be this good. --- I'm going to stop this post now, as it is a long one, and start up a second one in a few minutes on other things seeable from these numbers. Hope it's not a waste of everyone's time.

The jabberings of Old Man Mike, Part Two:
Perhaps you folks would like to compare how we recruit vs. the opponents on our upcoming schedule? [Sorry, I'm going to tell you anyway]. As in my previous entry,

Notre Dame is (16;1;7;7;1) on the numbers of commits and star-rating breakdown.

2010 Opponents
a) Stan;20;0;9;11;0
b) USC;11;2;5;2;2
c) Pitt;11;0;4;7;0
d) UM ;9;0;3;6;0
e) Utah;17;0;0;7;10
f) MSU;11;1;1;5;4
g) BC ;7;0;1;5;1
h) PU ;5;0;0;5;0
i) Tulsa;12;0;0;2;10
j) WMU;2;0;0;0;2
k)&l) Army and Navy; zero for obvious reasons on 2011 commits.

What these numbers say to me is that if the star ratings mean anything at all [and this board bases almost all its speculations and hopes around them], then ND will "go to battle" with an incredibly advanced arsenal compared with a typical opponent in years to come. It also points out to me what spoiled brats we sometimes are on this forum: what if we were involved with some of these other teams? --- well, since this is football and not social work, I am happy that Staff Kelly plans to give us a powerfully unfair advantage over our average opponent and coach them up even farther. --- again I'll quit for a moment and get back to this in a few more hunt-and-peck minutes.

Jabberings, Part Three: here are a few other program numbers that may surprise you.

1) Miami-6 commitments;
2) Penn State-4 commitments;
3) West Virginia-9 commitments, NO 5 or 4 stars;
4) Virginia Tech-8 commitments;
5) Wisconsin-7 commitments, NO 5 or 4 stars.

There's a lot of those kind of numbers out there. Kelly [and Weis] stockpile a far more powerful arsenal, on paper. --- regarding recruiting style: some of this is a fooler, though. One of my ex-football-playing brothers who is a personal friend of Frank Beamer, says that some programs like Virginia Tech take NO athletes unless they really know the relevant COACH. If they have a trustworthy relationship with the HS coach, then they'll take the player without any glance at star ratings. My brother claims that Beamer doesn't even consult the star-raters at any time. The Georgia Tech coach said an identical thing recently. This policy will work if you have an extremely good network of relationships, and a veteran like Beamer doubtlessly does--it helps to have Bud Foster as your lifetime defensive coordinator to turn rough stones into NFL diamonds, too. But even having said that, the star-ratings DO seem to translate into elite programs even if you can do it another way--therefore we should admit that TX,FL,GA,AL,OK,USC,OSU going after the 5&4*s is not a mistaken behavior on their parts. --- when one looks at the NFL draft [which is an indicator of those athletes who can really play football], one finds that many "no stars" are there, but the draft is nevertheless speckled with many of the old 4&5*s from HS days. Once again, you CAN do it in other ways, but having an arsenal of elite HS highly-rated athletes is not a bad idea. My point is this: Kelly did it the hard way at Central and Cincinnati. Now he's showing that he can also get the fire-power to build off an already partly elevated base. Even though it's not NSD yet, I'm honoring this guy and the staff.

Well, this is possibly the greatest weekend in recruiting in many years.

It's gonna most likely be awhile for more recruits to commit. Now I'll just focus on September 4th!
