I know most things about my Irish. And I know that Michigan pretty much taught us the game of football. But I'm pretty sure we have the oldest marching band in the country. Well a Michigan fan buddy of mine said that we stole their stadium design and we stole their fight song as well. He thinks the victory march is just a different version of hail to the victors.

Some one PLEASE tell me some facts that I can shove back at him. Did'nt our fight song come out before theirs anyway? I dont know. Some one tell me if you know the answers.

I think michigans was written in 1898 and ours was written in 1906 or something like that

The stadium opened its gates in 1930, replacing the old stadium Cartier Field. Total cost of construction was more than $750,000. The original seating capacity was 54,000. Knute Rockne played a key role in its design, keeping the space between the playing field and the stands to a minimum. The stadium is patterned, on a smaller scale, after Michigan Stadium, the main difference being the tunnel location. The Irish played their first game in the new stadium on October 4, 1930, beating Southern Methodist University 20–14. The official dedication was on October 11 against Navy. Over the years, its capacity was gradually increased to 59,075. In 1997, 21,000 new seats were added to the stadium, bringing the seating capacity to the present 80,795. The playing surface has always been natural grass PER WIKIPIDIA

I for one know for a fact that Notre Dame has the oldest marching band in NCAA history. Ask him to prove that they stole the design, I mean, its not likely that he was alive in 1927 and 1930 to see the stadiums be built. And as for the fight songs, tell him hes insane because the irish fight song was written exactly 30 years after michigan's song. And if he still is being defensive about it tell him that the only thing we stole from them was their pride in 2005 when we kicked their ass when they were ranked #3 and we were #20. We won in the big house 17-10. GO IRISH!

Musically, Hail to the Victors and the Notre Dame Victory March aren't similiar.

Doesn't Michigan only have 1 National Championship in the last 60 years anyway?

If Michigan taught Notre Dame how to play football, didn't Rutgers teach everyone how to play football?

Here's some things to counter with:

1. ONE national title in the last 62 years and they weren't even the best team that season. Nebraska was and shared the title.

2. Bo Schembechler never won a title.

3. Army has as many AP titles as Michigan.

Notre Dame Stadium's design was based on Michigan Stadium. ND's first football games were against Michigan. Our band was the first university band, and predates the football team. The Notre Dame Victory March and The Victors bear no resemblance to each other (BTW during the 100th anniversary of college football, the ND Victory March was voted the greatest of all college songs).

This discussion brings up a point that's nagged me since ND began accepting women in 1972, my junior year.

Cheer, cheer for Old Notre Dame,
Wake up the echoes cheering her name,
Send a volley cheer on high,
Shake down the thunder from the sky!
What though the odds be great or small,
Old Notre Dame will win over all,
While her loyal sons are marching
Onward to victory!

Good shit, indeed! I humbly propose a subtle but significant change to the last two lines. It wouldn't disturb the meter or overall message one bit, but would be far more accurate these days:

"While her loyal sons and daughters
March on to victory
!"

Try it. I promise that it won't hurt.

Hells bells, isn't the ladies' 2001 NCAA b-ball crown the last National Championship du Lac has garnered?

I'm pretty sure I've read that the change has already been made. I'm sure BGIF and the Mod Squad or JPham could clarify.

My only initial semi somewhat doubt about adding "and daughters" was that I thought the fight song was a football song, played by the sons. But "sons and daughters" makes perfect sense, since it is a University song, not just a football song.

Fight song wise nothing beats the victory march and the victors sounds like a duck being drowned in a deep fryer... it is loud and obnoxious just like all of those scUM fans

i would agree - i honestly don't think they sound musically alike.

Also, it is fair to say that our stadium is more or less fashioned in the same manner of the Big House.

Nevertheless, fight songs and football stadiums? That's all he can throw your way?

Ask him about what Michigan did after we beat them for the first time? They refused to play us for several years after we finally learned the ropes and gave them a loss.

Hell no! there have been several attempts to do this (Or the even worse "Loyal ones"). most of us have come to understanad "Sons" to encompass both sons and daughters. There is way too much political correctness in the world already. BTW, you may notice that some female students shout "her" while some male sstudents shout "sons."

Clearly mucking about with copyrighted, classic lyrics shouldn't be taken lightly. At the time the song was written there were no "daughters," only rowdy sons. If a change has been made I applaud it. If not, I urge it. As it is, I've yet to see or hear anything.

Adaptation can be a wonderful thing.

Fortunately such a change has NOT been made. You might note that the words to "The Irish Backs" and "Hike Notre Dame" also remain unchanged. '"Down the Line," though a football song is gender neutral.

The fight song's have different time signatures and chord progressions. They aren't alike, and aren't even similiar.

Should we all eat the early bird dinner at 4:30 then?

Would that be Monday Meat Loaf, Tuesday Tacos, Wednesday Wacky Waffles, Thursday Turducken, Friday Filet o' Fish or Saturday Steak Tartare? Never on a Sunday ... that's my day of rest.

I'm in.
