Listed as OLB but Notre Dame see's him at Safety

Townsend will be on campus July 13

No listed favorites so far but says USC is recruiting him hardest

Looks like a solid Safety if he has legit 4.6 speed. Also could have a frame that can support 30+ pounds of muscle at OLB wothout losing athleticism. Maybe he has football speed. The guy popped up out of nowhere with a ND offer and visit so i don't know much about him

Close to 200 tackles, that's why. Dude was a beast last year, and there's a reason why so many coaches are after him. Kid can play...

Care to support this?

Sure. In my mind he looks too small (in weight) to play LB and too slow to play S.

Now... let me first say that I know there are inconsistencies in how 40 times are reported and some people play much faster than their time. What I will say is that I played lacrosse and ran track against Evan Royster (RB for PSU) in HS and he was significantly faster than me in the 55. I ran a 4.7 FAT time in full lax pads w/ a stick in hand (so basically put me at 4.6 speed) and Royster is clocked anywhere around 4.4 and 4.5 depending on where you look.

Now, at LB 4.6 speed is actually quite good. But at safety you have to be able to close distance in a hurry and being a little slow on your feet can also be the difference between cutting down the angle on a big run and getting burned for another 40 yards and a TD. All I'm saying is that I know what 4.6 speed is like and you would get toasted by most elite WRs or RBs in college football.

At OLB if he could add some weight he could be very good.. as long as he also keeps his speed.. and that isn't always a guarantee when bulking up. Either way compare him to a guy like Councell. Councell is taller, faster and bigger and I would think a much better prospect to play safety than Townsend.

But that is just my opinion, and there are obviously a lot of intangibles and other measurables like lateral quickness that we don't have on these guys.

Just look at the offer list. Pretty much should tell you all you need to know.

No that's kinda my point. His offer list is incredible but his measurables scream 3 star. Basically my question was answered when someone pointed out that he had 200 tackles or something outrageous like that. If he is strong for his size, plays fast and is a gamer then obviously you can kinda throw measureables out the window.

4.6 seems like a fairly consistant time for a safety. Alot of schools and coaches exagerate times which is why the NFL combine can prove so much in speed. I remember Florida had that board withc like 6 guys running in the 4.3's or less. Joe Haden was thought to have a 4.3 as CB at Florida and ran a 4.5 at the combine.

My boy Brian Smith runs a 4.8 last i checked but being slow is not a complaint people have of his. I consider Wayne Lyons a 5 star in my book but watching his film i would say he is a 4.6 but is listed at 4.55

Watching his highlights he shows great instincts

This kid is a stud as safety prospect. 4.6 40 is more than a capable speed for a safety. He hits like a Mack Truck, and his game speed is definitely good. If you watch the video on him, he is clearly breaking away from people. He closes and blitzes like an animal.

You give good personal experience points, but basing your opinion on a 40 time that's not bad to begin with is not sufficient

Draft picks with similar speeds coming into college:
Taylor Mays, USC:
6'3", 218, 4.6

Morgan Burnett, G Tech:
6"1, 180, 4.6

Reshad Jones, GA:
6'1, 173, 4.6

Taylor Mays is alot faster than 4.6

Townsend reminds me of Frankie Telfort from 2009. Anyone else remember him?

Rule of thumb is you add ~.2 to hand times to get FAT times so that makes sense. I'm actually surprised they don't have college football recruiting combines where they measure these things for consistency.

People put way to much emphasis on 40 times, football speed, vision on the field, and knowing where to be(instinct) mean a whole lot more than a good 40 time.

amen

40 times are not the best at telling whether the kid can play football.

I'm a Raider fan...I know.

He had better stats his sophomore year

He had better stats his sophomore year

189 tackles, 14 sacks, 36 tackles for loss, and 11 interceptions sounds like good stats for any speed.

Almost 400 tackles before his senior year. The ISD piece shows he is a quality individual. Get him now.

Any news on this kid? Is he still interested in us? We could really really use him now!
