ESPN 150 Watch List recruit and future U.S. Army All-American offensive tackle Matthew Hegarty (Aztec, N.M./Aztec), has confirmed with Irish Sports Daily that he has verbally committed to Notre Dame, choosing the Irish over a slew of other scholarship offers from nearly all the nation’s best programs. The 6-foot-5, 265-pound Hegarty becomes the ninth verbal commit to pledge to head coach Brian Kelly and Notre Dame in the class-of-2011, and the third offensive tackle, joining fellow ESPN 150 Watch List prospects Jordan Prestwood (Plant City, Fla./Plant City) and Conor Hanratty (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan).
“I did commit,” Hegarty wrote ISD in a text message.
Hegarty visited Notre Dame for the first and only time on March 20th for junior day. He also considered scholarship offers from the likes of Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, California, Florida State, LSU, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Oregon, Stanford, Texas, UCLA and USC.
"After taking a few days to just think about everything, I came to the decision of Notre Dame because they are truly the complete package," Hegarty said. "Their academics are excellent, the football heritage is incredible, and the situation couldn't be any better. I enjoy the spread, and look forward to playing tackle for the Irish."

I like the idea of building up the lines first! The foundation is the most important part of building a house!

Great Work BK, Welcome Hegarty.

I assume we are done recruiting tackles....

Holy hell what a pick up. I don't think we are done with tackles yet though - still looking good with Austin from CO. Kelly also has said that his tackles and guards are pretty interchangeable.

I said it before this signing, but our OL recruiting class looks incredible this year.

I was in New Mexico all of last week for work, my presence in the area must've had an influence... And I'll be in Chicago in a couple of weeks too so maybe it will be a sign for a couple of WR's.

Seriously though, this is a HUGE pickup! Tackle is a position of need for the Irish right now, but soon it's going to be a definant strength. 3rd and short is going to feel a little different in a couple of years.

Great deciscion Matt, Go Irish!

Of the O-linemen on board so far, who do you thinks sticks at tackle and who moves inside?

Welcome Matt! Go Irish!

IMO, Prestwood and Hegarty are OTs, and Hanratty is probably an OG. One of the nice things about this offense though is that the positions are more interchangeable than in a pro-style offense, so the coaches have a lot of freedom to find the best fit for these kids.

I say buy some stock in some local buffet businesses in South Bend. It looks like we are bringing in some eaters!

Probably our full time ND student who volunteers his time to maintain this board in addition to his academic workload. He's dealing with exams but took the time to post an update and made an error.

Thank you for your support. But my nose hasn't been in the books (except for the likes of Blue & Gold, "The Greatest Coaches of Notre Dame, an ND Media Guide, or Phil Steele) for quite some time.

I'm not the ND student, nor are any of the other volunteer board moderators, our Administrator is the ND student. Last year he maintained the formating and graphic design for Irish Envy while he was a student in France in ND's overseas program. Hail to the Chief!
