There are reports all over the Net that OL commit Matt James fell from a 5 story building and has died.

I hoped it wasn't true but it looks like it is.

Thoughts and prayers to his family. Tragic news.

EDIT: Here's a facebook page dedicated to him. RIP Matt...

There is nothing worse for a parent than to have to bury one of their children. My prayers to his parents.

My parents had to endure the death of two of their children.

Oh my God. This is the saddest thing I've heard in a while. This is awful. Prayers to his family, friends, and classmates at St. X and ND.

You never believe that this could happen to you or someone who you know (or hold in high regards like we did with Matt) until it happens. Horrible. 17 is too young, man.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Matt and his family. All those attending the Blue-Gold Game, if you could, try and light a candle for Matt in the Grotto. I know I will for Matt.

Oh no!

This is just terrible. How in the world could this have happened?

God bless his family.

For the James family:

I am standing upon
the open plain.
The horse at my side takes a whiff
of the morning breeze
and starts for the blue horizon.
He is beauty and strength
and I stand and watch him
until at length
he hangs like a speck
of white cloud
just where the land and sky come
down to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side says:
"There! He's gone."
Gone where?
Gone from my sight - that is all.
He is just as large
in height and girth and style
as he was when he left my side,
and just as able to bear a load
to the place of destination.
His diminished size is in me,
not in him;
and just at the moment
when someone at my side says,
"There! He's gone,"
there are other eyes
watching him coming,
and other voices ready
to take up the glad shout,
"There he comes!"

-Henry van Dyke

So many others are so happy to meet Matt where he is now celebrating. I have a grandfather that will show him around, and they can sit and watch Notre Dame games together with the best seat in the house... I read this poem at his funeral. The lord only takes those strong enough for the journey.

You'll always be Irish Matt!

How my heart hurts...

Just makes me feel sick. I feel guilty for thinking, "why can't it be some other kid". I hope and pray that his family can deal with their loss. I don't know if I could if I were in their shoes.

Notre Dame Football - Terrible Tragedy

Tragic news today out of Panama City, Fla. as multiple news organizations are reporting that Matt James lost his life in an accident while on spring break.
James reportedly fell from a balcony at the Days Inn motel on Front Breach Road at around 6:25 Friday evening.

The 6-foot-7, 291-pound offensive tackle from St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati signed a National Letter of Intent with Notre Dame in February.

Notre Dame officials were not immediately available for comment.

James was just a week shy of his 18th birthday and leaves his parents, Jerry and Peggy.

This is horrible, to think how bright this kids future was. Going to the University of Notre Dame to play Football, and he can never see the field, it is tragic

So so so sad. I get choked up just thinking about it. And not because he was a football player or a kid going to Notre Dame, but because he was a good young man and a child of God.

I know right now that it hurts our hearts to even think about. However when God calls, it is time to come. I hope and pray (and know) that his memory and spirit will give his family, his community, the Notre Dame family, and many others the support, encouragement and faith that it needs from above.

I promise to light a candle in the grotto when I go back on Tuesday especially for all of us here at IE. Our prayers are all we have to offer of ourselves to the family at this time.

Thank you for all of these comments. It truly makes me so blessed to be a member of this wonderful community.

I'm really curious to see how Luke Massa is holding up. He has to be a total mess right now. Rest in peace Matt.

I'm really curious to see how Luke Massa is holding up. He has to be a total mess right now. Rest in peace Matt.

I forgot what website I was reading, but Massa's father was quoted saying something along the lines of "Luke lost one of his best friends"... and "Luke is in disbelief"...

Luke I'm sure is going to be deeply effected by this.. Not just a short brief sadness like most of us...

Massa can use this tragedy to fuel a spirited career at ND, for himself and for Matt's sake too.

May God Bless all involved in this terrible loss.
