FootballCoachScoop sources confirmed that Tony Alford (Running Backs coach) and Brian Polian (Special Teams coach) have been retained by new Head Coach Brian Kelly.

Not the most credible source out there, so I'll wait until it's confirmed by Kelly.

Alford may have been sent by Kelly due to being a RB prospect and stating the opinion straight from the position coach. With the change of coach we need to be direct and instant with contact.

can we put that site to rest. have they been right ever during this process? i really hope Polian stays because he's a great recruiter and i love seeing local kids at ND but they might have jinxed him

What problem do you have with that site? Our new head coach Randy Edsall/Jim Harbaugh/Skip Holtz feel this site with their 137% accuracy is the new gold standard for information...PS new Cincy head Coach Quinn thinks its great too

[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]Alford, who just completed his first season on the Irish sidelines, made significant strides with the Notre Dame running backs. After the two worst rushing seasons in school history in 2007 (75.25 ypg) and 2008 (109.69 ypg), the Irish improved its rushing output by nearly 17 percent to 128.2 yards per game on the ground this season. In fact, the Irish churned out 135.6 per game on called running plays in 2009.

Notre Dame also saw a major upgrade in rushing yards per carry. The Irish backfield averaged just 3.9 yards per carry in both 2007 and 2008, but improved by over 20 percent in 2009 to 4.7 yards per rush average. [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]Notre Dame's running backs also saw an improvement in ball security. The Irish fumbled nine times in 2009, but only three came from running backs in 299 carries. Contrastingly, Notre Dame's running backs fumbled five times in 2008.[/FONT]

ND '10 Coaching Staff Scorecard

N.B. Nothing really new here just a spreadsheet to show the players.

First column is Coaching Function. Keep in mind NCAA allows 9 Assistant Coaches this includes Offensive and Defensive Coordinators, Recruiting Coordinator, Special Teams, and the Position Coaches. The number of Functions exceed the number of coaches so many coaches wear more than one hat. The Strength Coach, Graduate Assistant, and Personnel/Operations slots are not filled by "on-field" coaches. Only the "on-field" coaches can actively recruit per NCAA regs.

Second Column is Kelly's '09 Cincinnati staff. Hinton, Guess, and Coombs have been reported NOT to be coming with Kelly to ND after the Sugar Bowl.

Third Column is Weis's '09 ND staff. Alford is the only ND Assistant Coach retained. While there is lamenting over several ND coaches not be retained for recruiting continuity, it's not clear if they were not asked to join Kelly. For example, Brown may have his mind set on a DC job and Kelly may have seen him as a DB coach. Again only conjecture, Polian may have been offered a job at a position other than Special Teams and refused OR he may have been offered Special Teams again but wants a different responsibility.

Fourth Column is Coaches from Others than UC or ND. So far I've only added Chuck Martin, the Div II Grand Valley State Head Coach who's been mentioned as a DC OR as a Defensive Position Coach should a Div 1/NFL DC surface.

Fifth Column is Kelly's ND '10 staff projected at the moment. Of the 9 Assistants Coaches to be named:
  • Only Alford at RB Coach is confirmed.
  • Quinn was Kelly's OC/OLine coach but he's had additional responsibilites at UC.
  • Forest was Kelly's QB Coach and is expected to do so at ND.
  • Molnar is the UC WR Coach but seems to be getting the least amount of ink of the current UC assistants so I listed Molnar with a question mark.
  • TE coach is up in the air. Supposedly Guess is coming with Kelly but Parmalee wasn't retained. New Blood???
  • DC is up in the air (at least to the public). Diaco the UC DC is supposedly coming but so is Martin who has been Kelly's DC before. Fans still rooting for a "home run" DC.
  • Elston was Kelly's UC DLine Coach and is expected to do the same at ND.
  • LB slot up in the air. Inge hasn't gotten ink on the rumor mill, Tenuta gone, Polian could have been moved here but he's gone too. Diaco coached LBs before becoming DC. IF Martin or big time DC comes I'd expect Diaco to handle LBs. Diaco could do DC and LBs as well
  • DB slot is open. Coombs not coming and Brown gone (for whatever reason).
  • Elston handled Special Teams at UC last year and others have also handled ST. With Polian gone, looks like Elson by default.
  • UC's Hinton not coming. Ianello at Akron already. Elston has been RC at UC.

Dick Bumpas, TCU's DC. He was a DL Coach, 90'92, under Holtz. He came to ND when Gary Darnell was DC and left when Minter replaced Darnell. Mike Trogvac was Darnell DL Coach.

Doesn't seem like that's a lot of endorsement, working under Darnell. Bumpas did coach a DL named Zorich while at ND.

Bumpas has a lot of miles on his career but has done well the past few years at TCU. He took a defense ranked down low like ND's currently is and took them to the Top Ranked NCAA team in Total Defense for '08 and '09.

Isn't it a bit early to second-guessing Coach Kelly? I trust his judgement until such time as he gives me legitimate reason not to do so. And...imo... it is a promotion to be known as the DC at ND vice head coach at Grand Valley State..which few have even heard of.

FWIW, Steve Hare from ISD reporting that BK is going to hire a former Notre Dame assistant coach that everyone will be excited about.

Guesses anyone?

In other staff news, Kelly told Bruce Gaston that he was going to be hiring his old Cincinnati strength and conditioning coach Paul Longo. This isn't a surprise, but it's the first time we've heard that it will happen for sure.

Kelly also told Bruce that ND's defensive line coach was going to visit him next week. Of course, Kelly hasn't announced the hire yet, but obviously he has a guy already...

A visit next week knocks out anyone currently coaching another team in a bowl game.

The coaches have to be under contract (to represent ND) and certified by the NCAA before contacting a recruit (pass the test on recruiting regulations). A few years ago when Vass departed, Powlus who was serving as ND's Director of Personnel, was promoted to QB Coach. Before Powlus could start recruiting he had to take a test to demonstrate his familiarity with NCAA Recruiting Regulations. A coach coming from say the NFL would have to do the same. A coach currently under contract to another NCAA team, such as Cincinnati would already be certified but could not represent ND to a recruit while under contract to another school (through the bowl game) which would bar those currently engaged.

I suspect (but don't know) that the certification test is administered by the school's NCAA Compliance Officer and can be completed in a relatively short period of time.

On that basis I'll hazard a guess that Kelly's either hired Chuck Martin as DL Coach OR promoted Bryant Young to DL Coach.
