Do not take this as a slam against the character of Randy Edsall. I think he is a great guy with good moral character who led young men through a HORRIBLE situation.

But, there is not a single sports analyst, fan, recruit, alumni, current player or other who will say, "wow, that guy will change the program!!" You will hear everyone say that this proves ND has lost its luster. ND is just not the IT job in football anymore. Randy who??? If it were not for the tradgedy that his team experienced this year, most would not know who he was or where he coached. I can literally see immediate fallout if he is the hiring.

I would rather take a risk with a bigger name who may have had some failings, ala Tubberville, than settle for Edsall. Go get Stoops at Arizona, Bielama at Wisconsin, Petterson at Boise or some hot coordinator.

I pray that this is just posturing to get Kelly to take the deal. I know that not every person will agree that Kelly is the perfect hire, but there is a large number of analysts, fans, players, recruits and prospective coordinators who will say, "wow, great hire!!!". I would rather have a coach who brings buzz and wow from some compared to Edsall who would leave us in that, "ND is just not ND anymore".

I am sure Randy is a great person, but there are many great people who do not belong as the next ND coach. PLEASE Jack, do not give everyone confirmation that ND is no longer relavent!!!! You are headed down that path!!

I second this post. I agree. You prolly shoulda maybe put this in the Randy Edsall thread. It may be moved there regardless. But I agree Jonesman.

after what we heard last week and what has come out THIS week.... VERY, VERY little has been proven anywhere near true... how about we take it all with a grain of salt until a new coach is hired... and go from there

Explain why the Edsall hire would make us any more irrelevent than the Parseghian hire? - Ara went 36-35-1 at Northwestern after leaving MAC Miami.

Before we throw the university under the bus, lets let them hire a coach first and not listen to all the rumors.

i just want a proven winner, edsall has done great with less but his best year was 9-4, which is pretty damn good at uconn but, ND aint uconn.

brian kelly has had a history of winning everywhere he has went.

ND is and always will be relevant, if edsall is hired he will become relevant. thats how it works. the press bashes us every time they get a chance but they probably want us to be good more than we do.

As I've said... If Edsall is the hire... call me for your season tickets back in 2011... We'll welcome all of the defectors back... at a price ;-)

Actually, that would be cool to see him as a special teams graduate assistant one day.

We ust don't seem to be the BIG players in college football, Alabama wanted Saban and went and got him, we should do the same instead and looking to save money on a contract. GO offer Bob Stoops, 10 yrs, 65 million and let him say know no!

I agree with this. Trust the process. Edsall is certainly not a marquee name, but so what? That doesn't prove much to me. If Swarbrick is doing the process correctly, he may find that Edsall is the guy.

That works until he has his 1st 7-5 year (after the 1st 3 or 4) and don't say it's impossible (he lost a QB and TE this year and shit hit the fan) - then threads start calling for his head and a $35 mill buyout.

Honestly when I heard Edsall's name I was somewhat happy. I think he has a good shot to succeed here. Think about where he did good at. UCONN? Are you serious. UCONN wasn't a complete Division 1 school until 2002. 2000-2002 was their 2 year transition. By 2003 he had them finish 9-3. In 2004 their first season in Big East play they reached a bowl game. Kinda crazy in only three short years he made that sort of transition. I'll bet since 2000 they have yet to have a top 25 recruiting class. And you can almost argue they have been a more successful program then us since joining 1-A. Because of the obstacles they have overcome. I just don't want Brian Kelly, I'd think that would be like hiring Weis again.

By the way Skip Holtz also coached UCONN when they were still in 1-AA. Just my thoughts. I think Edsall might be a fine choice. I bet you he would turn things around. By the way as anyone as excited about Dayne Crist if he can get healthy as I am?

What is the big deal? It’s easy, our new coach just needs the following:
• Go 10-2 next year, win them all 2nd year, win them all big in third year
• Embody every catholic belief and never once violated those beliefs (helps if the Pope is on board too)
• Only go after maybe 55-60 of the top 100 players at the start of recruiting
• Have his entire life open up for attacks on him personally or possible his family
• Have every decision 2nd guessed by the media and well informed fans like us on the board here
• Keep graduation rate at 90% or higher AND win them all or your fired

I bet Nick Saban is doing some soul searching right now on how he can get out of that dreadful situation in Alabama

agreed. Go after the big boys, not for exactly a 10 year contract but offer them more than they are making or will make at their current school.

Bring them in. If its edsall, im going to be pissed off very much that we didnt keep charlie. That would be an outrage. We hire someone with a worst record than us who coaches in the big east.

"Oh, his only downfall is they lost a bunch of close games!" Wasnt that charlies downfall as well?

r u nuts?
yeh, a coach with 2 national titles, and a coach with 1 national title.yes, that would be absolutely terrible for us.

if we're actually looking at edsall, why the hell not go after phil fulmer? id hate that as much as anyone, especially since i live in knoxville, but at least he has proven success.
or how about brian billick? he ha actually admitted he is very interested in the job, but they dont want someone from the nfl. what?!?!? he won a superbowl as a head coach! he's a defensive minded guy.

this whole damn thing better be a big ass smokescreen, because if we get edsall i might have to become a ut fan.that would suck.

UConn had a worse record than us????? If CW had gone 7-5 JS may have punted the coaching choice.

By the way... if the guy can't recruit... how many 1st and 2nd rounders has he then developped in the last 2 years - - - at Uconn!!!!!! Okay Clausen and tate willl skew this year, however....

i just cant get any more excited for Kelly than Edsall. in my mind, Edsall has had the greater challenge at Uconn. Kelly hasnt won playing big time football, either. i do not consider the big east anywhere near the level of the Pac 10 or SEC (or the bif 12 or big 10 in some years).

does coach of the year and undefeated and BCS mean anything to you? or are you just hoping that if some tragedy were to happen at ND he'd be the guy?

coach of the year past winners: tommy tubberville, larry coker, mark mangino, lloyd carr, gary barnett. no, the whole coach of the year thing doesnt get me too excited.

i just think what edsall has done at uconn has been very noteworthy and given the resources he can win at ND every bit as much as Kelly would.

what was lou holtz when he came to notre dame? was he the urban meyer or bob stoops of the time? he sure as hell wasnt just like so many coaches they werent great until they got to notre dame. everyone really needs to get off of this we need this that or the other to be relevant or to win.

its swarbricks job to decide who is the best choice, let him do it and lets root for brian kelly like he was the guy we all wanted the whole time!

i agree with you dskool. i have really grown to appreciate edsall and his style of football. i have always been a big proponent of a tough running game and defense, and i can tell you as someone who lives in ct that he has done that. the things he did with howard getting killed really dont figure into my feelings for him. he is building a program very nicely at uconn, nobody that doesnt live in ct can understand how hard this is. ct is not a place where there is a ton of football talent or football love you will typically see a kid 180 lbs playing on the line in ct in high school... jake golic was one of the best players in the state a couple years ago. he is doing things without local talent or a care for the football program.

sure he has his questions, everyone does but i think he could have done well at notre dame and i was a little disappointed when i saw kelly was hired.
