Is Jimmy Clausen ready for the NFL?

I really don't think he is.

The talent is there and he's made huge strides throughout his years here, but I don't think he's completely ready for the NFL. There's just something missing. He has the arm and the accuracy, the leadership ability.

However, I think his pocket presence is still below average. He has a tendency to create pressure when there is none and bail out of the pocket too early (see USC). One of the most important skills an NFL quarterback has to have is poise in the pocket.

Do you guys think he's ready?

And I thought I was alone in thinking maybe he should stay another year for reasons other than being selfish. No I dont think he's ready sometimes he can be a great quarterback but in some instances he still makes bad decisions that I think another year could maybe do him some good. I dunno Im rambling im just glad Im the only one that doenst think he would be smart to leave right now

I think he needs another year........

Another year would help unless he lands on a good team with a good line. IF he went to the Raiders he should bank his signing bonus and remember his good ol days at ND.

i'm with you on this. i've been saying it the last few games (to my wife, not here). his accuracy is up there, but today he missed some crucial throws. his touch was bit off too.

my biggest concern is the way he throws off his back foot. he tends to lean back when the throwing the ball and relies more on his arm strength than stepping into a throw. watch some video and you'll see what i'm talking about.

when he goes to throw his back leg is still bent and he doesn't really step into the throw. i could be off on my assessment but i still feel that he needs another year under his belt.

if he leaves, i feel he will become a bust.

You have to factor in his toe injury with all of that.

He clearly will play in the NFL. But the last three games makes it clear that another season at ND will put the icing on the cake for him. And I think it could be the difference from being noteworthy at the next level or just another bust.

How did the other Clausens' NFL careers turn out? Put the signing bonus back for a rainy day.

Like IrishR#1 said, I think it has something to do with his turf Toe....

I'm one of the biggest Jimmy fans out there, but I think he could definitely benefit from one more year at ND. He needs to work on stepping up in the pocket, maybe checking down a little better. He also still looks like he could stand to bulk up a bit. I have no doubt he can and will be drafted high, so sticking around won't help that. Fact is, he has a major league arm, and would have accuracy to compare with any NFL QB. I thought Quinn was NFL ready, and he has looked bad (thanks to Cleveland?), so what do I know.

Another season won't help Jimmy if he's busy learning a new system.

If Weis were to stay, then yeah, he'd prob benefit from another year, but I think his problems can be fixed at the NFL level too. The intangibles are there. He's just gotta work on the little things.

He's very much prepared for the NFL.

Agree...holy cow...what a long way he's come this year...his first two years he locked on to receivers, and never avoided a sack, and at the first sign of a collapsing pocket he'd panic, and stop looking down the field...he never showed the poise and footwork I saw this year...and most importantly his tenacity in the play by keeping his eyes down the field...I see the other QBs, and while they win more, Jimmy seems more skilled.

Don't get me wrong...I'd take him if he wanted to stay...but WOW what a difference a year made in him.

whoever drafts him will work on tweaking what is needed. most qb's drafted have some weakness that still needs work. the determining factor will be his projected draft status. all mock drafts have him going pretty high, so he is not coming back just to work on a couple issues. besides, there will likely be a new rookie wage scale in place for 2011, so anyone in a good draft position is going to get in this year.

how crazy would it be in 2-3 years to see charlie mentoring brady or jimmy again in the NFL?

Jimmy's gone. All this stuff about his bro not getting drafted - it means the family wants him to jump to NFL when his draft stock is highest. That is now.

He could stick around another year and maybe win 9 or 10 games, but we also thought that would happen this year. IF you are him, why punish yourself? ND gave him a platform to show his skills, he gave a lot to the program, but as far as winning, nope, it didn't work out. Life is too short to stick around for a winning season on spec.

Plus, he's going to graduate this year, or be close enough that he could finish up in his spare time.

There is absolutely no way he comes back. Let's resolve ourselves to this, be thankful we have a guy like Crist waiting in the wings, and move on with (hopefully) a great new coach like Brian Kelly.

Jimmy is gone...next year will be an inexperienced offesive line except for Robinson. Plus if CW gets fired(we can hope!) I doubt if Jimmy would want to play in a new system. He will go in the first round despite his flaws and I can't see how he would turn that down

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Charlie would definitely find another job in the NFL and it wouldn't surprise me to see him on a team that ended up with either one of those guys.

He might not be completely there yet, but he is probably the most nfl ready qb that will be in the draft. Its obvious he has all the tools and has shown why he was the #1 recruit in america

No, I also think that Clausen is not ready for the NFL. He keys on 1 receiver when others are open and I thought last year his deep ball was better. No doubt that he will for sure go to the NFL, but he is coming off of a turf toe injury, and I think coming back for his senior year will benefit him.

Two things here, regardless of whether Clausen will, or will not, declare for the draft:

1. The Rookie salary cap is not as big a threat as people would like you to believe. The NFL owners will just follow the lead of NBA Executives a few years ago. They will sign rookies to smaller salaries, and pay them 10s of millions of dollars in signing bonuses.

2. The line may, or may not, be inexperienced next year. If I remember correctly, only Olsen is NOT eligible for a 5th year. So they may only have to replace one offensive lineman, next year.

he also has a tendency to lock on to a receiver when throwing short routes........... if he does that in the NFL it is sure to be a pick six

Ummm... Sam Young has started every game since he got here, I doubt he can apply for a fifth year lol.
