Just thought these were interesting numbers:

Coach A: 16 Seasons

116-65-3 Overall Record
7.25-4.065 Average Season Record
6-4-2 Bowl Game Record
3 Conference Titles

Coach B: 20 seasons
168-57-2 Overall Record
8.5-2.85 Avg Season Record
2-1 Bowl Record
8 conference Titles
2 National Titles

Just post which coach you would rather have A or B.

How do you win 8 conference titles and 2 national titles but only play in 3 bowl games?

Srictly by the numbers B is the obvious choice. I'm sure we are going to find out that A had a better reputation/popularity as the better of the 2 coaches.

Sure seems like a trick question. Maybe coach B is a Div II (FCS) coach? There's really not enough information to answer this properly.

But if B has two national titles in 20 years, and a better winning pct., I think you have to go with B.

I echo these same points, verbatim.

Coach A is Lou Holtz prior to his hire at ND.

Coach B is Brian Kelly up til present day. The 2 national Titles are from his days at Grand Valley State where he built the program, and the Bowls are from UC but he also earned a bowl with Central Michigan before moving over 2 UC.

Counting DII national titles is pointless in this arguement. Coaching at DI is light years ahead of coaching DII and shouldn't be compared. Having a good DII resume is a plus, but should not be used to determine if someone is ready to take this job.

Coach Kelly sucks

lol

The only concerns I have with him is if he can really recruit or not, because he only spent 3 years at CMU and is in his 3rd year at Cincy, so he has really won without "his" guys. Also, I want to see how a top 25 D does against his offense. Being in the shotgun a lot, the run game can be easy to slow down, and the only time they have gone up against a real D, they scored 7 points (VT in the Orange Bowl)

He keeps getting jobs because he's lucky, he's never played with his own players... his team will stink to all heaven next year, TRUST ME

Why is it pointless? X's and O's are X's and O's are they not? He was playing with comparable players to his competition level right? So basically he coach and schemed his way to back to back national titles, on the field by the way not just in some polls. And it's not just that as well he took over a bad MAC team and went on to win a conference title in 3 years and now has UC looking pretty damn good. I'm not saying Kelly is the guy but your reasons for him not being the guy are pretty weak. Guy reminds me of Tressel or Meyer.

They only lost that game 20-7 to a VT team with much much more talent.

To answer the recruiting question, 5 thats how many players were rated 3 stars or better by rivals on Cincy when Brian took over. So in 4 years before Mr. Kelly took over cincy landed 5 3 star guys, Since Kelly took over they have landed 36 3 star or better players. To me thats pretty dang good, I've been to Cincy its a tough sell.

Good point. I hadn't done much research on Cincy recruiting since Kelly took over. I'm still curious to see where they would be next year or in two years because all the juniors and seniors are Dantonio's recruits still.

Virginia Tech is not exactly full of 5 stars either. Frank Beamer has built a reputation of turning 3 stars into All- Americans

People... on National TV last year, Kelly said that he doesn't want to leave Cincinnatti. Just because his name is out there for a job, doesn't mean he's goning to leave his current job. Same with Meyer. Same with Stoops.

Meyer also said he wasn't going to leave Utah...

as long as we want ND to become like Central Michigan, and Grand Valley State, I say he is our man. but if we want to win in D1 (yes, im old skool, i still say D1) then we dont anything to do with him.

He would be Ty II - He would get the same players he got while at Central Michigan, and Grand Valley State; just like Ty got the same type of players at Notre Dame that he got while at Stanford. Central Michigan, Grand Valley State, Cincinnati, Stanford recruits, are not ND recruits.

Well he also has 19 players rated 4 stars or better on his roster, compare that to the 0 Cincy had when Brian Kelly arrived. In 2002 Cincy had a class with 16 players who were rated below 1 star or not rated. That was the senior class Mr. Kelly inherited. So yes he has been winning with another coaches players, the same players that Mark Dantonio could only manage an 18-17 record with.

All he has done is win everywhere he's been. Just like Ty, right? We might as well keep Faust II! lol

Well most likely they are going to lose a game. West Virginia and Pitt are both pretty tough teams. Not to mention they have been playing with their backup QB for the last 3 weeks.

While I agree that his championship titles came against equal competition, and he should be commended for winning them, you can't compare that to Holtz, because that is not the same competition.

You can't have it both ways.

You could also find some high school coach with 17 championship titles and say "Who would you rather have, huh???" It's really not the same thing.

I'm too young to really know the Holtz era well, and I'm not anti-Kelly, but this comparison is dreadfully flawed.

Let's see both of their Div I comparisons.

What? It starts to get ridiculous when people criticize coaches for winning with previous coaches' players. That's how Weis got to his BCS Bowl games. If you watch Cincy play you would know that they are a great team. Kelly is 30-0 going into the 4th with a lead at Cincinnati according to ESPN. If that is true, that is unbelievable and will get him a big time job next year.
