Tonight I saw in a Blog on ND Nation that Ian Williams is supposedly not starting. I am hopeful that this is NOT true, but have no info either way. I have searched every article out there. I saw on the practice reports that he was running on the first team. He is listed as the number 1 NT, so not sure where this info came from for the blog.

Anyone have more definite data??? If by some way, this is true, CW just lost almost all my respect. That would be BS!!

Weis was asked about it and said Ian was with the starters a lot today so he should be playing a lot, but Weis made it seem like its up to the defensive coaches to make the call on Ian's PT.

You would lose respect for a coach who sends a message about playing hard by sitting a guy for the first series, or maybe even only the first couple of plays?

The message he is sending to Ian would be not to speak your mind. That is not right.

Weis told you that, or you are assuming that that's what it is? Maybe Williams is dinged up, and they just haven't advertised it?

What message?

What action was taken?

Your own first post said you could find no information to support a left handed comment in a blog. You pointed out you nothing to support and further that Williams was running with the first team in practice, and he's listed as the #1 NT.

So why twist it pseudo fact by repeating it?

Here's the quote from the Vannie's ND Pitt Preview. Emphasis added.

Pitt Awaits Fuming Irish

posted by John Vannie

Reeling and squabbling after a devastating loss to Navy, the Notre Dame football team heads to Pittsburgh to take on the ninth-ranked Panthers on Saturday night. Dave Wannstedt’s team is 8-1 on the season after easily dispatching Syracuse, but there is no chance they will take the Irish lightly. Led by Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, the entire city is intent on showing extraordinary support for Pitt this weekend as the Panthers pursue their own BCS dream.

The Irish players have attempted to show solidarity this week in the aftermath of public player criticism of the defensive schemes run against the Midshipmen. As a consequence, starting nose tackle Ian Williams will not start at Pittsburgh and it is unclear whether he will play in the game.

Jimmy Clausen, Golden Tate and Kyle McCarthy ultimately accepted responsibility for the loss on behalf of the players, but the smoldering remnants of internal strife remain palpable on campus. Irish assistant head coach Corwin Brown fanned the flames by calling out Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo for encouraging illegal blocking methods against his defense, and he went on to defend his team’s game plan. This circling of the wagons is usually a bad sign that significant cracks are forming in a program’s foundation.

Meanwhile, Coach Charlie Weis hopes to have tailback Armando Allen and guard Trevor Robinson back for this game, but tight end Kyle Rudolph injured his shoulder last week and will not be available on Saturday. The defensive line will be thin without Williams in the middle, which may enable Pitt’s running game to wear down Notre Dame’s front as it did in last season’s quadruple overtime victory.

...

Notice in the first reference that Williams will not start. Two paragraphs later the claim escalates with a second reference and now Williams will not be playing "without Williams in the middle".

Here's the quote from Weis in response to a question at Thursday's Presser:

Q. As for, er, are there additional reprecussions for Ian Williams as it pertains to playing time this week?

A. Matter of fact, today he was running with a lot with the ones. So I don't know exactly how it will play out. Ian will being playing plenty in the game.

Keep in mind the "without William in the middle" author and his associates are the same people that ran the banner headline 8 years ago, "It's Gruden!"

These are the same guys that ran the caveat ( below) the same day as the "without Willams" article to posters on their board about the ills of posting sausage without foundation - from sportwriters. Obviously their writers are exempt from the caveat. They can publish sausage with a shred of attribution as long as it stirs the pot.

Good read.

I repped you, but my lower keys are stuck and I misspelled on the rep. Happens when you spill Cracker Jacks (surprise inside) on your keyboard.

Things get stuck.

ever play football? football is not a democracy, you do what you are told when you are told.

if he wants to speak his mind, he should write in a blog, or stand on a box in the quad and see who listens to him.

Ian Williams should not start, he shouldnt even play this week.

This is something that I would blame weis for, no way he should play this week after his comments about the coaching staff last week. Just because I blame weis for this, doesnt in no way shape or form think he needs to be fired. There is middle ground with me, im not only HOT or COLD, there is WARM with me.

If he isnt starting because he stated the obvious - Navy outschemed them - and an inferior player is ahead of him because of this then I guess the head coach isnt putting his team in the best position to win is he?

So, basically if they don't play Williams you lose your best run stopper against one of the best running teams in the nation. Don't make sense to me. This have not been comfirmed yet.

have you ever played organized sports? if you answer yes, you were a shitty player/teammate. you have no concept of what it means to be on a sports team.

to suggest a coach should not play a player after a discipline issue, just because he is the best player in that position, tells me you have no idea what it means to be on a sports team, and absolutely no idea what it means to be a coach. (makes me think your weis observations are way off base too)

your comment is Pete the Cheat's policy, what you are suggesting is EXACTLY what is being done at USC....just sweep it under the rug, and play the guy, no need for discipline here. (this is well documented with PTC, but for reference please see Rey Maualuga)

Is that how you want weis to be? IF ND blows out Weis, is that how you want the new coach to be?

From what I read about this. It seems it is up to the defensive coaches who will decide how much he plays and weather he starts or not. It is not Charlie's call.

He was calling out the Defensive Scheme, not CW's scheme... therefore it makes sense to have the coaches on the D decide this one, not Charlie.

CW plays it classy once again, I love this guy!

I don't have a major problem with him being disciplined. But Weis shouldn't have done it with the media. You don't do that to a kid. Do it behind closed doors. The way he did it, "That's why he's a captain and he's not" was pretty low, in my opinion. That's a personal shot and not really called for from an adult. It could have been handled a lot better.

Weis being the boss...its ultimtely his choice. whether Weis drops the hammer, or Tenuta, or Brown.....its all Weis' decision, he is the boss. If he wants to delegate that to an assistant, or coordinator, that HIS CHOICE. but ultimately, any punishment would either come from weis, or at least was run by weis for his approval or denial.

basic chain of command rules apply.

I know, but I was complimenting Weis for delegating that authority to his defensive coaches, let them make that decision as they have that personal relationship with Ian
