Are we in the top 25 now?

I would like to think that depsite another frig'n nail biter we should be in the top 25 even close to 20. By next week after Wash st. a few other top 20 teams will take a dump and we'll be 19 or better. The pundits aren't talking shit about our strength of schedule anymore. The two teams wit lousy record (Purdue and Wash) beat SC and OSU and the rest are winning. Iowa got lucky (again) against MSt. and Nevada scored 70. How did we shut them out? This is the week to rack up some style points in prime time.

only 2 teams in the top 25 lost. BYU at 16 and Miami at 10. Maybe if BYU falls out of the top 25 we will move up in the poll in which we were 26. That's about it.

I am a NDamer, an alumnus, and a fan, but not an uncritical one. The administrators of this site are willing to brook no criticism of ND football and/or its so-called "legend," and label one as a troll if any balanced remarks are offered herein. I'm sure the result of this posting will be no exception, but, what the heck, here goes:

Are any of you embarrassed to be participating in a serious discussion of us possibly being ranked in the top twenty-five? On those rare occasions when we play anyone with so much as a hint of a national ranking, we come up short. Admittedly, there's not a lot of evidence to support that contention, because we virtually never play anyone any good, and then wonder why we get blown out in the bowl games when we finally do. We love to stack the deck in our favor, scheduling-wise, demanding a 7 (home game)-4-1 format, no representative home-and-home schedule with several traditionally strong teams, and we carefully handpick opponents that even we are guaranteed to beat. In that noble tradition, we have added two more patsies for 2010, Western Michigan, who has a losing record in the pathetic MAC, and Tulsa, loser to the Sooners by 45-0. If we want to manipulate scheduling in a manner that will please the home fans and get us lots of "winning" records, that's fine, but let's not pretend that we're doing anything but lying to ourselves, suggesting somehow that we "belong" on the real national scene when we do that....we don't, and to talk about us deserving a national ranking is, frankly, embarrassing under the circumstances. When we start playing no more than half our games at home, when we visit top programs on their turf every other year, and when we succeed on that basis (don't hold your breath), then let's talk about rankings.

Wow, we visit USC and Michigan every other year! Are you saying that these are not top programs? Also, starting in 2012 we start a 4 or 6 game stretch with Oklahoma! You are indeed a troll sir!

Asan ND alumn i would expect you to understand the nature of scheduling as an independant. Notre Dame has several traditional rivals like USC and Michigan, thats are scheduled years in advanced. Games like Navy, Purdue, or Stanford which you call soft are practically conference games for us. Everey school must take adavantage ofthe schedule so we play 7 home games. That is one more than every other school. Unlike Florida or Penn St, we never play 1AA schools. Also becasue of our independant status, it is harder to find schools that are willing to play us, or are available to play us between conference games. Unfortunately 2010 will be a year where the schedule will not be too hard. This will be the 3rd year of our percieved weak schedule. Traditionally we have played very hard schedules and will continue after with games against Oklahoma, and talks with Miami and the SEC. So i guess the point you weretrying to make is that we suck and have to water down the schedule to compete. That is a stupid argument and you clearly do not understand what goes into scheduling

Wow, I am no administrator here, so don't try to hold my words up as some example of the contention that they brook no criticisms of ND football. But you, Sir, are a moron. I find it hard to believe that ANY ND alumnus could possibly be as stupid as you appear to be. You complain that we rarely schedule any ranked teams, and that we added "patsies" Western Michigan and Tulsa, for next season? But you fail to mention that we also added Utah. Oh, by the way............Utah has represented pretty well in the polls lately. Tulsa is 25-10 in their last 35 games (all of 2007 and 2008, plus this year). Directional Michigan I will concede should absolutely be a gimme game. Right now, we belong on the national scene as much as any other program that is ranked in the bottom 5 of the Top 25. Get over yourself, dude. This isn't 1966.

Your first paragraph aside, I don't have a problem with your post. It states your opinion, and despite what you think of this site, our mods allow opinion on the board ... just not inflammatory responses that are intended to provoke hateful responses. I, too, dislike our current trend toward scheduling weaker opponents. I also believe, however, that it is difficult to avoid. Jason sufficiently provided information covering that subject, so I won't expand further. I do not believe our schedule is any weaker than the rest of the nation, just weaker than we are used to at ND. From one of BGIF's posts in another thread, I understand that we currently hold the 17th ranked toughest schedule. Not too shabby. I challenge you to find more than 10 other teams ranked in the top 25 that have a more difficult schedule than that. In addition, there have been talks about OU joining the schedule and a confirmed commitment to play ASU (underrated, IMO). TCU (undefeated, 8th ranked) recently turned down an invitation. As Jason mentioned, rumors have also mentioned a renewed series with Miami and while nothing has been negotiated, Alabama as well.

So where does that leave us? We continue to play one of the toughest schedules in the nation despite what the media would like you to believe. You can't expect us to play a team in the top 25 every week. Also, we get everyone's best effort. Our game is the one game circled on their schedule. Even though we have experienced a serious drop-off in results and expectations over the last decade and a half, teams still use us as their measuring point. We are coming back around. We need to stay the course. Talent level is rising. Charlie is still learning. We have invested a lot of time and effort into him. The team has bought into his system and they support him (I wasn't sure about that the last 2 years). I'd like to see the pay-off in the next couple years. We're not there yet. Infact, I see at least one more loss this year. But, I think our expectations must be higher next year.
