If you've been watching ESPN this offseason, you may have noticed wide ranging "opinions" voiced by different "college football analysts" about Notre Dame.

The worldwide leader in hedged bets, I told you sos, kicking ND when they're down, and fellating them when they're up, has been setting ND up as either a Cinderella story, or a huge dissapointment that they couldn't help but see coming.

The reality is, no one knows exactly what kind of team ND will be this year. No other team in the nation could go so far in either direction. What is certain, is that 12-0, or 6-6, ESPN will be there profit from their brilliant prognostications.

Thanks to the eternal battle between the two races of people in the world, those who love ND, and those who hate ND, all eyes will be on the Irish when they square off with Nevada on Sept. 5, to see what this years edition has to offer.

Should the Irish struggle out of the gate, ESPN will have plenty of "Charlie Weis Hot Seat" material prepared, just in case. Wilbon, Stephen A. Smith, and the insufferable Mark May will again play the race card, comparing Weis' tenure to that of the incomparable Tyrone Willingham, who has since proven with another program to be the coaching equivalent of the SMU Death Penalty.

Seriously, if the NCAA does ever hit USC with that Lack of Institutional Control charge we've all been waiting for, making them hire Willingham seems like the perfect penance.

More likely, ND comes out and ROLLS against the Wolfpack. Whether people are actually afraid of Nevada, or are trying to give more credibility to ND's admittedly manageable schedule, I can't figure out, but this game has 52-7 written all over it. The Wolfpack have a potent, gimmicky offense that puts up a lot of points in the WAC, but matches up horribly against Notre Dame.

There is no receiver on the Nevada roster that would cause problems for ND's 5th cornerback, much less their top two. Jon Tenuta will keep eight in the box, blitzing early and often, making life miserable for Qb Colin Kaepernick.

The undersized Nevada lineman rely on quickness and execution for their zone reads and veer option running attack, and that plays right into the strength of this year's Irish Defense: Speed.

A little later in the season, and Nevada might be able to prepare better for Tenuta's scheme's, and know a little better where the heat will be coming from on ND's young defensive line. A week one matchup does not bode well for the 'Pack.

Which brings us to the Nevada Defense: 91st in total, 99th in scoring, and dead last, 119th in passing D in 2008. They will be lining up against the best WR tandem in the Nation in Golden Tate and Mike Floyd, and 6'7" future Mackey award winning tight end Kyle Rudolph. If you thought Clausen lit it up on Christmas Eve, wait til you see him in six weeks. Expect 400 plus yards, and another five TDs.

Thanks to the ESPN highlight reel airing 38 thousand times per day, ND will rise about ten spots in the AP rankings, and Jimmy Clausen will be thrust into Heisman candidacy. From there, it will be up to young Jimmy to earn the Heisman where it was meant to be won: On Sportscenter.

NDOM if you wrote this, its the most sensible thing you have ever said.

That's not saying much. :) Seriously, good writeup. I'm all for predicting a week one blowout, its the national championship talk that's a bit over the edge.

I'm still worried about our offensive line. I have no inkling as to the outcome of the first game of the year. After all, Nevada did average more than 500 yards per game last year and have most of those folks back. If its as easy as NDOM says, why play the game?

as nice as it would be to open the season with a blowout. ill be happy with a win from a complete team. no last minute turnovers, just a complete game from a balanced team.

No last minute TD and game winning tackles against an inferior opponent. (SDSU)
They better run up the score and run it up big.

...and fellating them when they're up....

gotta love that....

Wilbon, Stephen A. Smith, and the insufferable Mark May will again play the race card....

I keep saying to myself their comments are not racially motivated, but I dont think I am too convincing. I like Wilbon and Stephen A, but Mark MAy is a complete Spencer Pratt-Dbag.

Seriously, if the NCAA does ever hit USC with that Lack of Institutional Control charge.....

Pete the Cheat (PTC) was in the news yet AGAIN this week; again 'explaining' his 'fine line' use of an ex-Raider coach at USC practices. Doesnt he get tired of explaining, and clarifying his position all the time? OJ was found not guilty, but do you think he got tired of all the murderer comments and questions?? Where there is smoke there is fire. Dude is in the news all the time explaning his side of things, and why everything is always on the up and up at USC. wait a couple weeks and you'll again see PTC in the news clarifying another player arrest, player suspension, academic problems, or use of a coach, or some recruiting situation that will need clarification. at best, he's a slimy dude.

...ND's admittedly manageable schedule......

As a Notre Dame fan I am expecting to hear all the comments about the schedule, that would go in line with ND winning the majority of the games. past the 5 or 6th week of the season, if I still hear ND haters talking about their weak schedule, then i'll know that ND is doing good. So during USC week when MArk MAy says something to the effect of "but their schedule is so weak...." it will put a smile on my face.

Agreed. All I ask is that the coaching and playing demonstrate competence and control. There's no need for show-boating blowouts (with the exception of USC, if possible) to be in the hunt. The passing game, with all its talent, should live up to expectations. Caveat: should the performance of the offensive line not improve and the revival of a running game not come about, we're good but ho-hum.

My hope is that we have neither "Moral Victory" losses and nor "Schoolyard Bully" wins. A simple, undefeated season with no drama but plenty of excitement is all I ask. To (mis)quote Jean-Luc Picard, "Make it so, Mr. Weis."

There is a need for show-boating blow outs. As a result of not finishing the job last year we ended up losing 3 or 4 games. When you have a team down by double digits, you keep going.
I'll settle for blow outs against Nevada, Navy, Michigan, Washington and WSU. Blow the teams out you are supposed to, soundly beat the other teams.

That reminds me of a Robert Vaughn line in Superman III;

"I ask you to kill Superman, and you couldn't do that one simple thing?"

That's where competence and control have been missing from both the coaching staff and the players on the field. You get a commanding lead against a "lesser" team and you hold on to it and add some points without piling on the points and inflating stats.

USC and BC are the exceptions. Blow outs of 30 or more against those two would go a long way to making me a happy Irish camper. BC this year not so much; +21 will do. My point: Build a solid lead in the first half and into the third quarter. Hold it, add a bit to it, but don't ignore player development just for the sake of stroking an ego or two or juicing the pollsters. Embarrassing an opposing team is decidedly gauche. [My apologies to any southpaws out there.]

A beat down of USC would be tasty and go a long way toward easing my (far too) occasional pain over the last three decades. And elevating the status of NDv.2009. Pounding BC, regardless of their current troubles; would be simple, sweet, sweet revenge.

Yup. Keep in mind, though, that I was raised Catholic, dated many a Catholic girl in my youth, was married to and divorced by a Lutheran Lass, 57 and currently in search of employment. I'm used to asking/begging for things I have little chance of getting. All I ask is that you let me dream the impossible dream and think/opine outside the box.

Clausen could throw for 300 yards or more against Nevada, Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Washington, Boston College, Washington State, UConn, and Stanford.

He could easily get 400 against Nevada, Purdue, Washington, and Washington State.

Unless we have a couple of disasters like Boston College and USC from last season, Clausen should easily throw multiple touchdown passes per game.

Its not the multiple TDs I am worried about, its the multi INTs.

I agree! He cuts his INT's way down and everything else will take care of itself! Here's to blowing people out so much that Crist gets a good bit of work!!!

I agree, N-Doomer. And, with a little help from one of those pharmaceuticals constantly advertised during sporting events, my personal "Phoenix" might be rising ... I just need to find a target for my "free bird." If you run into any Nymphs during your wanderings in the forest who might be interested, let me know – PLEASE!

Have pills, will travel.

Fear not. Faline is as deer to me (and as untouchable) as an SMC freshman with a Hometown Honey. I was just trolling for a loose forest denizen or two (or three or four) that could look past my obvious negatives and concentrate on my beneficent positives.

Wink, wink; nudge, nudge. Say no more. Say no more. 'E's not dead, e's only sleepin'!

Oh, and I'm honored, thrilled and all a-tingle ... I got me a "Bastage!" More valuable, in my book, than Reps and Vbucks since I have no fucking clue as to what they are and how they could possibly be more deer to me.

"... and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard rain a-gonna fall."

[I'd attach an MP3 of Bob Zimmerman/Dylan croaking the song, but I don't know (or care) how to do it]

I'm not dead yet...I think I'll go for a walk.

Good on you! Enjoy the cool, star and moon lit evening ... if it's cool and clear where you are tonight.

We had a high of 81 yesterday and a thunderstorm about two or three AM that lit up the sky, dropped the temp a good 20 degrees; gave the trees, flowers and grass a much needed drink and provided every doe, buck and Nymph in the woods a welcome (and much needed – they were getting quite gamey) shower.

I'm in SoCal (Southern California to you non Cali folks...), and it does not rain here.

Oh snap! It drizzled (my nizzle) for 33 seconds 1 hour after I washed my car 6 months ago. Aqueduct anyone? Anyone?

Tongue is fine, but I suffer from DPS - Delayed Punctuation Syndrome. It's a rare syndrome that causes the sufferer to radomly type periods on forums.

Hmmm. Looks more like PPS – Premature Punctuation Syndrome. A not-as-rare-as-some-would-admit syndrome that causes the sufferer to type periods before "the time is right."

Just sayin'. I know, I know. "Bastage!" Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa, etc.
