Anyone know when Fall camp starts in August, or where to get a camp schedule? I know no one can start officially until 2 weeks before classes start, but trying to get some definitive days and times.

Crazy as it sounds...I am considering a trip from Philly out to South Bend to catch a few practices and take in the school. Here's why.

1) I have 3 weeks of freedom before I start grad school full time and working at the school as a grad assistant.

2) I have a little money to put intro a little vacation.

3) I've never been to South Bend.

4) I wanna see the University of Notre Dame damnit

Any help, suggestions, ideas, tips are welcome and appreciated!

Just walk around campus and take your time. You have to see every part of the campus because its so special. Its an awesome place to be. Go light a candle at the Grotto and say a prayer to the irish gods for a Notre Dame national championship, check out Sacred Heart inside if you can, and definately the Gug and Joyce Center if you can. Not sure when fall camp starts though. I'm pretty sure JPham goes to school there (I think) get ahold of him somehow and maybe he could show ya around. Oh and dont forget the bookstore.

I actually just got back from a seven week position as a counselor for a summer camp on campus. Notre Dame during the summer is amazing and is one of the few, precious chances to really take in the campus on your own, without the crowds, without the noise. Take advantage of some time on your own to walk around the lakes, noticing every detail inside the basilica, hanging inside the air-conditioned main building, light a candle at the grotto, read on a bench on God Quad, leave a note in the loose brick in the stairwell on the third floor of Hesburgh, walk around inside the Jordan Hall of Science, see if there is anything being performed at the Debartolo Performance Arts Center, get a smoothie at Reckers behind South Dining Hall, and be annoyed by the construction going on everywhere.

I would offer to grab a brewskey with you and show you around if I were on campus, but students don't get back for another few weeks as you noted (and I am studying abroad in the Fall anyhow).

I would HIGHLY suggest coming down to see the campus. It is gorgeous in every sense of the word. I am here in SB right now, this is probably my 10th time, and every single time I make sure I go to the campus and walk around. I designated tomorrow as my time to walk around while my fiance picks up her wedding dress and does other things I have no interest in. I can't wait.

As for you checking out practice, that won't happen. They close the practice to everybody. Only the media gets to watch, and that's just for the first 20 minutes. But here's the schedule anyways, which is also posted in another thread (can't remember which):

Friday, Aug. 7: No practice -- it's the final day of summer school -- but Weis and his assistant coaches meet with the media for the first time. No players talk, due to exams and such.

Saturday, Aug. 8: First practice at 1:30 p.m. CT, selected players available to the media for the first time beforehand.

Sunday, Aug. 9: Another 1:30 p.m. CT practice, and the rest of the roster (except the freshmen) available to the media for the first time.

Thursday, Aug. 13: First double-session of training camp. Practice at 8 a.m. CT, then again at 4:30 p.m. CT.

Saturday, Aug. 15: Weis holds his annual open practice for the media. Expect enough minutia to choke a horse.

Monday, Aug. 17/Thursday, Aug. 20: Two more double-sessions, and the 2009 captains and leadership committee meet with the media in between the Aug. 20 practices.

Friday, Aug. 21: It's Freshmen Media Day... otherwise known as Manti Te'o Greeted By A Media Crush At Michael-Jackson-Funeral-Levels Day. One of likely two chances to hear from the freshman during the season.

Sunday, Aug. 23: This appears to the the Student Appreciation Day practice, open to the Notre Dame faithful on campus, starting at 7 p.m. CT.

Monday, Aug. 24: Weis gets the Irish into more of a game-week preparation schedule, starting practice at 3:45 p.m. CT. Preparation for Nevada likely intensifies starting now, if past form holds.

Saturday, Aug. 29: Last preseason session -- likely a game-day walk-through deal, going on precedent -- at 12:30 p.m. CT.

Sunday, Aug. 30: The Irish are off, Weis meets with the media at 3 p.m. CT -- his usual Sunday appearance time -- and the 2009 season is truly officially underway.

I've been on campus four times, and I've only seen a little of the campus, unfortunately. I haven't seen the Grotto, I haven't been down by the lake, I'm a poor boy.

There is no place more beautiful on this Earth than the Notre Dame campus.
I love the campus, but I have been at least a half a dozen places that were more beautiful than ND:

Diego Garcia
Maui, Hawaii
Odessa, Ukraine
Kiev, Ukraine
Fresno, California
Varna, Bulgaria

I have never been to any of the other places, so I can't really tell if you are being sarcastic or not. If you are, good job. If you're not, I just have to say...Fresno? Are you kidding me? So, please tell me you are kidding...or, at least, tell me where the beautiful part of Fresno is located.

Polish Leppy 22, I would highly suggest you take a visit on ND's campus. I usually go during the fall & winter- football, basketball, and hockey games. There is so much to see and I always feel good when I am on campus.

I just stayed a week in a cabin up in the smokeys by Gatlinburg. It's a sweet trip if you can do it. Gatlinburg is a busy town, but if you want anything done stay away from Pigeon Forge. It's basically a cc of Orlando (right next to disney). I think there were 5 laser tag zones within a 3 mile stretch of road.

Polish, if you end up going to South Bend head over to the outlet store, just north of the Edison, Ironwood intersection off of ironwood. Put these coordinates in on google maps 41°41'48"N 86°12'55"W

Sorry, GoIrish. I threw Fresno in there as bait, and then forgot to come back and check it. Fresno was sarcasm, the rest were not. I spent a few months in the Fresno area, even went to a Fresno State game. If they were going to give the United States an enema, they would place right smack dab in the heart of downtown Fresno, the Asshole of America. But seriously, the other four places are fantastic, and incredibly beautiful. They are "Anti-Fresnos".

Also, for you guys who like the Smokeys........

If you ever get the chance, take a drive through Lassen Volcanic National Park, and Lassen National Forest, out in California. It's incredible!! I have been to the Smokeys, and I like them. But they don't hold a candle to Lassen.

kmoose - you KILL me. "The Asshole of America"??? OMFG! That is the best description of the city you can possibly have! Laughed my ass off. And in your other post, you were right on - Lassen is incredible.

No... Gary, Indiana is the asshole of America. So much so the next season of Survivor is going to be in downtown Gary. All they have to do is dodge gun fire.

When I would fly home from school, I would have to sometimes detour through Gary on the way to O'hare. What a shit hole.

Thing with Gary is that it used to be a nice place. There are actually some nice homes there, although now they are run down and converted into crack dens. Fresno never was and never will be anything but what it is - a dump.

I do like your idea of Survivor being in Gary!

I went through Gary last summer for work, and it was amazingly ghetto. I'd rather walk through Baghdad.

Gary, Indiana is where Michael Jackson came from.

The idea of a Survivor in Gary would be awesome.

Let' see now ... and work with me on the allusion ... it's been posited that Fresno, CA, is the effluvia spewing anal terminus of America, with Gary, IN as the armpit. Does that mean, assuming a torso the relative length of Danny DeVito's and legs the relative length of Manute Bol's; that America's running, snot encrusted nose is Newark, NJ and its tri-colored, pedicured toes are luxuriating in the sands of Waikiki, HI? Just Askin'.

Not necessarily. But it does mean that Seattle is America's penis. Gives new symbolism to the Space Needle, huh?
