I think that is a fair rating, but I Think he will move into the top 5 by the end of the season. Great year for QBs.

I only see Tebow, Bradford, and McCoy rated higher

How were these rankings composed, what was the criteria? Nobody has more natural ability to throw a football than Claussen. He also has some very nice weapons a year older at WR. I dont see how he doesn't go into the season ranked amongst the top 5 qbs in the nation.

Tim Teabow

Sam Bradford
Todd Reesing
Jeavan Snead

there are five right there that are easily above Jimmy RIGHT NOW...

at the ned of the year??? I have no doubt Jimmy has a great chance to pass up at least one or two of those guys...

Agreed and thats just off the top of the head. Jimmy has all the potential to Break into that top five this year, we just gotta put it together.

Is this an article? any link?

Sorry. But anyways Clausen is the only Pro Style QB in that list. So if we learned anything with Stafford and Sanchez going in the top 5. Clausen is destined to be the number uno pick in the draft. Unfortunatly. Like to see him finish out a senior :(

he may go pro but unlike when Brady Quinn left, we will have the next in line ready. Dayne Crist is the real deal and should do great when its his time to start. If there is one thing you have to give credit to Weis for is he has brought talent back to Notre Dame. So regardless of what happens this year, Notre Dame is still on the verge of returning to greatness

[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]NDinL.A. provided this in the "Claussen (sic) gets no respect in position rankings" thread[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/fighting-irish-football/42205-claussen-given-no-respect-position-rankings.html[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]
Joe Schad from ESPN had his top 10 QBs of 2009, and he had JC at #7. His exact list:

1. Tebow (UF)
2. Bradford (OU)
3. McCoy (UTX)
4. Zac Robinson (OKS)
5. Pryor (OSU)
6. Jevan Sneed (Miss)
7. JC (ND)
8. Daryll Clark (PSU)
9. Locker (UW)
10. Robert Griffin (Baylor)
[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]N.B. I added the missing teams to NDinL.A.'s post.[/FONT]

[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]Clausen finished the season ranked at #43 in the NCAA QB Efficiency Ratings. Schad bumped him up to #7 for '09. [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif][/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]How much higher do you think he should be ranked preseason? [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif][/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]How much higher can he realisticly climb in the rankings?[/FONT]

[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]Consider that the #1, #2, and #3 QB's on Schad's List had their teams finish in the Final '08 USA Today Poll at #1, #5, and #3.[/FONT]

[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]Oh and two of those QBs have won the last two Heisman's. [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif][/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]The #4 QB finished 18th in the polls, the #5 QB's team was #11, the #6 QB's team was #15, and the #8 QB's team was #8. Clausen, Locker, and Griffin teams finished out of the polling.[/FONT]

[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]We all expect Clausen to do better this year as a veteran, upperclassmen with a healthy Floyd, Ragone, to go along with Tate and Rudolph and with a veteran Oline and with a Running Game. And that great secondary should get the offense the ball a few more times than last year. [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif][/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]Clausen should have a record setting ND passing season unless Charlie “pounds it” too often. But will that be enough to finish in the Top 5?[/FONT]

[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]Let's be candid, will Weis put up 51+ points per game like Stoops did last year so Jimmy can pad his numbers? [/FONT]

[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]No, I don't think so either. [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif][/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]So how does Jimmy match Bradford who threw for 1600 more yards, 25 more TDs, and 9 fewer INTs on only 40 more attempts? Jimmy has to cut his INTs in HALF, DOUBLE his TDs, and increase his Yards/Attempt by 40%.[/FONT]

[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]Jimmy will post big numbers but he doesn't have a coach like Stoops, Meyer, Mack, or Tressel that will trounce the cupcakes to get the media's attention. Without Oher, Snead's numbers should suffer. Without some key receivers, OLs, etc some of the other QBs may suffer as well. [/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif][/FONT]
[FONT=Arial, sans-serif]Cracking the Top 5 is possible. Winning the Heisman is possible (ND has the schedule to help). Finishing as the #1 NCAA ranked QB, no. Regardless of whatever Mel Kiper or any of the tea leaves readers says.[/FONT]

He better start by outbattling the guy that finished at #44 last season right behind Jimmy, the Nevada QB.

I don't mind that Weis plays it safe and runs the ball late in the game. The problem is we havent been able to run the ball.

Hope this works. I used to know how to post spreadsheet data. This my fourth attempt with this. The previous attempts using wrap HTML tags and wrap PHP tags ended in the data running together. The preview looks OK, hopefully the formatting will hold this time.

The first column is Schad Rankings of '09 Returning QBs. The next column is NCAA rankings based on '08 QB Efficiency Ratings at the NCAA site. Neither Pryor nor Locker were ranked last year by the NCAA as they did not have the necessary 15 minimum passing attempts per game their team played.

I'm aware that Tebow, Pryor, and Locker (and some others) add a definite running threat of 50 or so yds/game. Total offense is consideration at least when talking Heisman. I'm not about to try and incorporate thoes into these QB numbers. Anyone so inclined (EastonPA are you out there?) feel free to do so.

Well the QB data is there if you care to scroll through the window. Don't know why that happened. Any posting wizards have formatting instructions. I cut and pasted the NCAA table into an OpenOffice spreadsheet, then pasted into a posting box here using "Wrap
Code:
 tags around selected text. I thought the "Wrap [HTML] tags around selected text was the method I've used in the past but the data all ran together when I did that.

The NCAA FBS QB Efficiency Ratings (less Pryor and Locker) can be found at:

[URL]http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/natlRank.jsp?year=2008&rpt=IA_playerpasseff&site=org[/URL]

You have to construct Pryor's and Locker's data from team reports and the NCAA QB Efficiency Rating Formula.

I'm sorry that list is COMPLETE FLIPPIN GARBAGE...

five of the top ten are from the Big 12 and none of these are Todd Reesing??? SERIOUSLY!?! usually let these lists roll off my back but that is just silly...

and yeah I agree completely that Jimmy has a better future ahead of him than almost everyone on that list BUT as of now... you can't compare Jimmy to any of them... (in regards to my last post)

I dont want Clausen to be on any preseason lists. I want him under the radar, if thats possible for a ND QB.

Remember BQ senior year? He was touted at the front runner in preseason for the Heisman. I thought he was doomed from the start...preseason hype, and being the quarterback at ND? talk about pressure and expectations...

Plus if Clausen doesnt beat USC, then there will be no Heisman. So I place Clausens chances this year at slim and none...and slim is looking to leave town.

Clausen needs to go at least 12-1, beat USC, and have a TD:INT ratio of 25-10 or better to have a shot at the Heisman.

Clausen won't even get consideration with a TD:INT ratio of 25-10, much less a trip to New York. In my opinion, he'll need less than 10 picks, and at least 30-35 touchdown passes. He also needs to perform well in big games.

I don't care if Clausen wins a Heisman, he just need to cut down the mistakes and play more consistenly. Id much rather have a legit BCS team than any individual awards right now.

Just saw these #'s from another website, and I thought here'd be a good place to put them.

Want to add a reason to re-examine the football future? Of course you do. Start here: Check out these numbers, from Quarterback A and Quarterback B.

Quarterback A: 406 of 685 (59.3 percent), 4,426 Yds, 32 TDs, 23 INTs
Quarterback B: 329 of 604 (54.5 percent), 4,272 Yds, 26 TDs, 23 INTs

Quarterback A — the more impressive totals — is Jimmy Clausen during his first two seasons as a starter for the Irish.

Quarterback B? The same for the No. 1 pick from April's NFL Draft, Georgia's Matthew Stafford.

The original article I got it from is premium from ESPN, but Golden ND wrote it so I copied it from his blog.

I've been comparing JC's first 2 years to his for a long time on this site to all the Jimmy bashers, but hearing it from someone else who knows a helluva lot more than I do is nice. Again, this could be a special year for Jimmyyyyyy...

I think jimmy is going to have a good year but those numbers don't tell me anything. Georgia plays in the SEC.

They tell me alot. It means that we have a good quarterback who everyone likes to bash because
A) Notre Dame is one of the most hated teams in sports
B) Some Irish fans put unrealistic expactations on him. (good luck to Te'o considering the hype thats around him)
C) People forget that he is a true sophmore playing on one of the youngest and most inexperienced teams in the country.

Can you elaborate on that? NOt ripping you just trying to figure out exactly what you meant. Georgia does play in the SEC, but Stafford had the luxury of playing against the likes of Western Kentucky, UAB, Western Carolina, Troy, and SEC road kill like Miss St, Ole Miss, and Vanderbilt. Their schedule, while it did have some tough games, was not murderer's row whatsoever.

Clausen played his share of easier teams too, but zero 1AA teams (or whatever they're called now)...

EDIT: Funny sidenote: Both these guys, as sophomores, played against Hawaii in their bowl games. We all know Jimmy's numbers: 49-21 win, 22-26, 401 yards, 5 TD's 0 INT's.

Stafford's #'s: 41-10 W, 14-23, 175 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT.

Means nothing, but it was a funny coincidence...

Required criteria for winning the heisman:
1. Be the starting QB
2. Be on the #1 team in the nation

If JC is the starting Qb for ND and ND is #1 JC will win the heisman.

I think jimmy is going to have a good year but those numbers don't tell me anything. Georgia plays in the SEC.

Those numbers don't tell that Clausen played as a true freshman in a season he should have sat out with a medical redshirt following elbow surgery on his throwing arm.

They don't tell about the inexperienced OLine that gave up a record setting 58 sacks.

They don't tell of the pair of 1000 yd WRs and the record setting pass catching TB that left the team before he arrived.

They don't tell about the lack of a running game at ND that allowed defenses to tee off on the pass rush.

They don't tell about the deep advantage in team talent Georgia had over ND (wanna check recruiting classes?) on BOTH sides of the ball.

They don't tell that Clausen has never played a Div AA school (You're right Georgia plays in the SEC) like Gawja Southern, Western Carolina, and those Div AA Hybrids that play in Div AA stadiums, have Div AA programs but declared themselves 1-A to get a 1-A paycheck, staples on UGA's schedule (Georgia plays in the SEC) like Troy, UAB, Western KY, and CMU, and lest we forget such SEC powerhouses as Vandy, Miss St, and Kentucky.

You're right like most sets of number you have to take the time to look below the surface to see the truth.

Thanks LA for sharing.
