College Football News posted an article the other day about the top 10 candidates for the Heisman:

Scout.com: 2009 Spring Preview - The Heisman Candidates

Nice to see JC make the list, although they lose a little credibility with me when they also include the 3 USC QB's (whoever starts). C'mon guys. Also, they say that Brady Quinn was only a fringe candidate, even though he was the highest returning vote-getter his senior year and was a front-runner.

But nice to see JC getting some love. He has the receivers, he has the arm strength, he has the work ethic (from what I've read). He needs a running game, that's for sure. Can he put it all together, consistently, while also looking off receivers and using his 3rd or even 4th options? He has experience now, and I think he'll have a great year...

That would be awesome if he was in the running of the Heisman at the end of the year....

I'm not so sure that this is good thing for JC to hear/see. He seems to have a touch of arrogance about him (which can be a good thing), and I hope these reports dont go to his head. I think this is premature, given that he has a good year this season, I can see him being a candidate next year.

JC should approach this season like he still has ALOT to prove. Not like he is a superstar.

Even if Clausen is unbelievable this season, he will be bombarded with claims of a simple schedule and a great supporting cast of receivers by every non-Notre Dame fan in an attempt to keep him from New York...not to mention ESPN, who have a gigantic mancrush on Tim Tebow and will drill his "brilliance" into the minds of the stupid.

I would say that he has not earned it yet...HOWEVER, the Heisman is not based on 2008, it's 2009...everyone should be considered to some degree and the whittling begins fast and furious.

the simple schedule will play a BIG part but if he remains consistent ......then the sky is the limit...

First let me go on record as saying I am not a Tebow, Urban, or Florida fan to say the least. I wish all three would fail miserably, however, they will not. Urban is a great coach and has built a great program. Questionable ethically, but that's why he didn't choose ND, he didn't want to have to care. Winning is all that matters to those boosters, and the education of players, or fair recruiting are far behind that. Winning is what he does. Tebow is insanely talented and fits the system to a "T". He is all Urban could have imagined and in the big game he shines brighter than at any moment. Lets not kid ourselves he deserved the Heisman last year, and the committee said nope not two young man, not good enough for that. If he hadn't won by default of a qualified candidate the year before he would have won last year. Tebow will not win the Heisman this year no matter how good he is, the committee would never allow it! It is a feat only accomplished once and it will likely never be accomplished again. I go on record now and you can quote me on it for later.........................................

I don't think this article will give Jimmy a big head or anything it doesn't really sound like they wanted to even include him but they are pretty sure he will have a good year and will be mentioned by others later so they wanted to be the first.
I believe Jimmy can use the article for even more motivation...........he will be moving up the list as the season goes along IMO!

I think he has a chance to put up numbers that are worthy especially if they have the kind of record they SHOULD get.

Jimmy will wlin the Heisman in '09. A combination of RB, WR and the new coaches will assure his superb performance on the field. Only one thing can derail his selection and that is the play calling of C. Weis. If he calls the right plays at the right times, then JC wins. Go Irish.

I don't get it. Weis had a great offense his first two years. We called a ton of screens and draws, which opened up the deeper passing attack. The tight end was a key asset to the offense, and was usually wide open and a great option for Brady Quinn.

Now, we rely entirely on the receivers. The passing attack isn't varied and is completely predictable.

Hopefully Weis opens up the playbook again. Then Clausen can start to play at his full potential, and compete for the Heisman.

J Clausen for Heisman this year? Why not?

ND needs to win some games though.

I slept through the bowl game though, so I am not a good analyst. (Gift inside)

JC seems to be very accurate. Good athlete. We'll see. If he sticks around his senior year, then I think he will be a true candidate.

Until then, who cares?

I mean he has all the tools, the options to throw to he just needs to make better decisions with the football. Until I see that on a consistent basis I say no.

Bambi you mean you didn't even dvr the game. Come on, go to best buy and get the box. Then if the sugar in the cracker jacks puts you out again you can watch the game at your own leisure.

I agree with your statement...... way too inconsistent to even be thought of as a Heisman hopeful!

Clausen has all the tools to become a heisman winner. His fr. yr. he had no o-line for pass rushing and last yr. he had no o-line for the running game. When he is on his passing game his accuracy is almost perfect. Clausen will stay for his sr. yr. this isn't basketball.

We will see. If he stays healthy and has the season most think he could have he is going to catapult himself into a first round pick. He plays in a pro offense, he has a great arm, outstanding accuracy, and can make any throw. Plus he is going to be 22 next year. His family isn't reaching for money but if he has a 30+ TD less than 10 INT season he will probably become a first round pick and come out.

Obviously it isn't a guarantee but he came here to play in the NFL because that's something his brothers never did. Something tells me if he has a great year he will leave. I hope not because if he comes back next year and we progress we could be a very good team and he would be a legit hesiman candidate. I guess we will all root him on and watch this whole situation unravel.

sure If he can make plays vs teams that are well...... good. then we will talk heisman. yea he tore the hell out of hawaii...... but USC, different story. the line can be to blame also, but really, it is all irrelavant until we actually win games, big games. winners win heismans, not losers. minus our golden boy Paul Horning (sorry but Jim Brown got ripped).

It's kinda hard to be consistant when someone is trying to rip your head off comming through a line full of holes.

I understand that but that doesn't change the fact that he was inconsistent. He looked good against Hawaii but he is going to have to look good against SC and Sparty for a shot at the Heisman.

Personally, Jimmy is not even the best choice for Heisman on the team, Golden Tate is.

In regards to the schedule... go take a look at Florida's schedule this year... YES they have had a MUCH MUCH better schedule the last two years but not so much this year... their out of conference (As always with SEC teams) is a complete joke and honestly, it's not much different from ours in strength IMO...

BUT espn and sec fans everywhere will thump their chest over their conference schedules all while pounding on ND for "Playing nothing but service academies every year"
