It's October, so about time to get the 2027 transfer portal discussion started!

Here are the positions where ND may likely need to make a move in the portal:
QB- no brainer here
Rb-? Walton/ James appears set.
TE- barring a 2nd half season rise from Ian Premer, they might go looking for a receiving threat.
Wr- guessing we lose more than the guys out of eligibility, given the lack of reps and touches through 5 games.
LB- absolutely
Cb- grabbing Mckinney last year was eyebrow raising, have to assume they'd look for another plug and play guy with Lenny and Mckinney going pro.
Safety- this all depends on what Shuler and Talich decide, imo. Good young talent in the DC behind them

Here's who is currently on the list:

QB- Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele- liked this kid alot coming out of hs. Not a great year so far after a better freshman year. In protocol currently.

Kamario Taylor- as good as Carr is, i think Denbrock's offense is optimized with a QB who can run. The price tag for Taylor will be nuts....

LB Mason Posa- BobbyMac's delayed gratification

LB Charles Correa- the one guy on Purdue's porus d.

TE Jelani Thurman- abused Shuler last weekend, to most everyone's surprise.

Wr Jordan Shipp- showed some juice against the ND dbacks.

Wr Trent Mosely- could a prodigal son return?

WR Tanook Hines- finished runner up out of hs. Does ND get another run at him after sc dumps Riley?

LB Talanoa Illi- portal is for production, but I'll make an exception because ya know, we have a thing for baller Hawaiian backers.

Who else ya got?

Qb is a position to monitor I think. Feel like JKS is a west coast kid. Also, Malik Washington
RB: No
WR: Maybe? Let's see if Ohio State kids develop and our young guys. Does Faison return? I think so.
OL: No
TE: Honestly, I see all but Washington and maybe Laresen returning. So no

DE: Nope. Especially if Young returns.
DT: Explore but probably more for depth
LB: Biggest need? We will need to see what KVA and Ausberry do
Safety: Probably not with Tallich, O'Brien and Long.
CB: I would definitely explore it if we could get a dude in.

QB, LB, CB, and WR are all positions to consider. But a lot of that $ could be at QB.

I don’t think we need a WR. Porter and Graham will be here. Gilbert will be here. And all the young guys will be juniors or sophomores.

I am aligned with this. You only take a WR if it is a game changer who says he wants you. Probably will go pro, but KJ Duff is an example

Linebacker is the only position that I am 100% need to bring in at least one guy. Team can be set everywhere else depending on who comes back. Another corner might not hurt for depth with the three starters moving on, although I have faith in Sanders, Adams, and Golden being formidable.

In a world where Grubbs or Jarrard need one more year, I'd want a class of 23 quarterback. That class was a massive bust overall but I'd take Kienholz or even Minchey. Not a lot else there.

Porter and Graham have not shown anything. We need a WR to replace Faison.
Exactly. If Graham continue to be a ghost then you shoot for at least 1 solid receiver, and maybe 2 depending on what Faison does. You can't depend on Greathouse, Graham, and Porter next year.

Based on how John Brice talks about Porter’s agent “obfuscating” the severity of his knee injury, I feel like he’s a coin flip to be back.

Technically only 5 players on the entire team are out of eligibility (Washington, Onye, Craig, Sneed and McKinney). So Job #1 is to keep the roster as intact as possible.

Beyond that, the ONLY position on the entire roster with depth issues is Defensive Back. So start there.

Picked up Dakorian Moore, Lamar Brown, Justus Terry, Kamario Taylor and Brandon Finney in my Xbox CFB27 dynasty, was pretty easy, think they should try that

This here. Not to be complacent - and we'll see how the second (and third) halves of the year play out - but we have a lot of really good football players with eligibility remaining and interesting draft decisions to make. We have also recruited exceptionally well in the last couple of classes and I suspect there are key pieces of next year's team who haven't seen the field much yet.

I know it's boring when other teams are turning over half their roster with new toys, but barring clear upgrades, I think I'd rather invest in retaining known quantities than go shopping in the portal - where for every Brewu/McKinney there's also a Porter/Graham.

If the staff feels that either Jarrard or Grubbs is going to be the next guy than they shouldn’t take a QB. With how the schedules set up, I’d much rather go through the growing pains of a first time starter in 27 than 28

The goal is national championships. ND should never punt on a season to develop a QB.

They absolutely should pursue a QB transfer if Carr jumps early.

Good point. Our schedule next year is so light. If they're confident that either of those guys can get us to 10 wins, and likely the playoffs, it might be a better move to develop a multi-year starter (who by playoff time would have a full year under his belt) vs. shopping in the portal. And you take the money you save on a QB and invest it in retaining our as much of defense and OLs as possible.

It’s impossible for a coach to think that way. In the NIL world, every team should be in “win now” mode if they have the funds available.

It's not punting on a season. Have you seen our schedule for next year? If we don't win 10 or 11 games, something went wrong. And then once you're in the playoffs, anything can happen. I'd spend on the defense and grow a QB.
