First episode of KOTSK was pretty good. Setting things up, a little background story.

Much lighter. Have to wonder if it gets heavier or not. I never read the book so can't say.

The books are definitely lighter in tone than ASOIAF, but it's GRRM.
I've read the books, loved them (prefer them to ASOIAF's books), and so far think the show is capturing the world perfectly. Very optimistic about how they'll handle the story the rest of the way.

We’re far enough away from the season 8 disaster that this show has made me want to rewatch the first 6 seasons.

HotD has time to course correct. It's a shame Condal seems like such a dickhead. But they brought George back into the fold for season 3 so maybe he can help them get back on the right track.
Because of Zaslav HBO forced them to cut off 2 episodes from season 2. It was too late in the game to rework anything so they essentially just chopped the final two episodes off, which also really hurt peoples perception of the season. For all it's faults it's also basically an unfinished product too.
