They just need to get rid of him.
The results aren't where you want them to be, and I'm not sure that his micromanaging allows guys to learn and figure it out like you'd want, either. But the way ND MBB has to operate, it's probably not to ND's advantage to fire him at this point. It's a recruit HS kids and develop program in MBB, the NIL isn't there for impact transfers even if you could get them in. If you fire Shrewsberry, you're right back where you were when Brey left. Everyone decent transfers out and you're left hoping you can figure out how to fill a roster for a few years while you recruit and develop.

The jury is out in if Shrewsberry can develop. Right now, the answer appears to be no -- I said before that they just don't seem to be improving year to year, and I stand by that. But how much of that is a function of the "old" guys just having a limited upside and how much is Shrewsberry not being able to push the right buttons? If some of the freshmen start leaving, though...that changes things. If you can't keep guys to develop them, then you're not going to have success.

You can replace them just like he did with the transfers.

He is dead weight

I went to the game yesterday just some thoughts....
  • this team doesn't show any excitement at all
  • there is no leadership on this team
  • a few members of the baseball team were signing autographs before the game
I think it's time Coach Shews gets some new blood on the coaching staff.
Towt has been the only consistent player on the court- he does what he was brought in to do.
I feel like there is some disconnection with the men's basketball program which goes along with my third bullet point. Kudos to the men's baseball program for getting out and connecting with the fans. I think the men's basketball program should do something similar for an early football game to connect with fans and sign autographs.

If you get rid of Shrews you are hitting the reset button and who do you get? I feel that this team has potential- they just need a good kick in the ass.

You know you have issues when the fans run to get the baseball players autographs at the men's basketball game. 🤣🤣🤣

As someone who likes the baseball program, good to see that. They need to get out there so people know about them…. they don’t get the attendance they deserve.

I also like the baseball program (thank you Link Jarrett) kudos to the coach for setting this up. Shrews should use the same idea and get the basketball team out and interacting with fans.

The Shrewsberry's are the very definition of entitlement. He thinks fans should flock in droves just because he and his son are part of the team. He could care less about connecting with fans. We just moved Brian Kelly to men's basketball. The program is not in a good place right now. You can tell. There is no joy on the faces of the players for the past three years under his leadership.

Another offensive snoozer
Bench is playing better than the starters. I'd like to think Sir is getting it, but he's had good games before followed by multiple clunkers. I'm sure Imes is a great kid and a hard worker, but he just is not a P4 player. For all the complaining about nepotism, it seems his loyalty to his kid's friend is a bigger problem.

We are so back

To still being a shitty basketball team. Idk if Shrews will survive this season.
Outside of another weird outburst, I would be surprised but not shocked if he is let go before the end of next year. I would be shocked if Garrity didn't have a series of chats about where things are going as the season progresses and into the office season. Even with Burton going down, there just doesn't seem to be any meaningful improvement with players themselves (which may be in part because they have to do things they aren't really capable of with Burton out).

You just brought in a really good recruiting class, and followed it with a solid one. You would almost assuredly lose every decent player to the portal. Starting over from scratch, which is likely what you'd have to do if you fire him, seems like the way only if there isn't a definable, reasonable plan to improve.

Shrewsberry will not get let go before the season ends, that would be a horrible move.

This is a very young team, at one point vs Clemson 3 freshman were on the court.

I didn't think the loss of Burton would hurt team this bad, but it is.

I think Shrews will be back for next season and his son is better coming off the bench.

To all those who want to get rid of Shrews who do you get?

Literally anybody else. Shrews has been an awful hire. Fooled me. He’s not a great X/O guy and he’s not a great developer of talent. Sorta gotta be one of those things to succeed at ND. He is a solid recruiter, though. And that’s what always gave me hope.

Unlike football, they just haven’t done enough in the portal to accelerate this rebuild. I think they’d really have to tank in ACC play for me to not have Shrewsbury back for another year. The alternative is just blowing up the entire roster.

We need to hire a coach from an established BigEast or Ivy who can develop talent at a program where academic standards are high and portal acquisitions aren’t super prevalent.

Alan Huss would be my first call.

Sit back and wait a bit.....they are well on the way to "tanking"

Get rid of this whole team and staff, besides Certa and Brady Kohler. Keep Sanderson on as SC for his sons next year. He’s highly regarded enough to have the next coach keep him on.
Restart…

I was fooled by Shrews.

Best case is you find a coach from an equivalent school, like ND, that can basically transfer most of his team over.

Before you get rid of Shrews I'd bring some new blood in on the coaching staff and I can see Garrity look to make changes after the season.

Looking at today's box score vs Va Tech only Shrewsberry played over 30 min. I'd go with this starting lineup: Certa, Koehler, Mohammed, Haralson & Towt. When I've watched I don't see Mohammed & Haraslon on the court much as the same time. Haralson & Towt need to see more PT.

Shrewsberry isn't going anywhere in the immediate term. Looking to the portal for anything beyond replacement level/try-hard players is a pipedream at this point.

Even accounting for Burton being out, the rotations don't make a lot of sense. There is no reason Braeden should be getting 35 minutes in a game where he can't make a shot. Imes is a bench player. The young guys need minutes to develop and doing what they're doing isn't going to do that

Scroll to the right on that box score and you'll see why Jalen and Towt didn't play more.

If this roster was being coached by prime Mike Brey, we would be a top 25 team. We have the shooters and talent to make some noise. However, this roster is stuck with a coach who does not have any functional offense. And you can see that the team has given up on defense. Oh, and I can't wait for another four years of a Shrewsberry to start and absolutely add no value to the team.
