It's not about then having the money, or not. It's about their willingness to pay insane sums of money to a transfer and how they feel that will impact the dynamic of the lockeroom and the stability of the program when they've sold their compensation system to their roster as merit based... If suddenly you go pay a guy $3 million to transfer to ND, and his statistical merit is thay of someone that Notre Dame is paying $700k internally, you're going to get a lot of pissed off people on the roster, wondering why someone is making 4x more money than they are, for the same / similar returning production.

You can probably justify (to your roster) a reasonable "free agent" premium for incoming transfers, but if it gets out of control that's when you start losing a losing a lot of key players to transfer, not just depth players.

Overpay for 2 DTs. Unless injuries happen, that will essentially guarantee them a deep playoff run and they will make all that money back and then some. There is not one DT on the roster who would have the right to get pissed off if they overpaid for proven talent.

People keep acting like that the only people that would be pissed about overpaying are other DT's. At a minimum, the whole defensive side of the field are at risk of being pissed.

Yes, a decent chunk may see the big picture of it helping the team get to the National Championship, so the overpay is a very minor irritant. I guarantee that there will be some where it would be a pretty big deal if an important member of the defense found out that a lower quality player was getting paid double of what they got.

There's a decent chance that it could be all smoothed over. But it's a risk that needs to be seriously considered before significantly overpaying for a DT

It doesnt work like that. If you "overpay" for a DT that has little career production at this point, its not only the DT in your current room that are looking at that and getting pissed. Its every position group, and every player on the team that feels like ND valued someone from the outside more than they value the guys that have been in the locker room the entire time, without the production to warrant it.
MF is walking a fine line, and I'm sure if they go out and overpay for players and he loses the locker room and 2026 goes south you will be one of the first ones there to criticism him for that too.

If players are upset about bringing in personnel needed to win, they can hit the door and not look back. Very simple.

Somehow other schools can manage retaining, recruiting, and portalling but it's just too complicated for Notre Dame specifically? Nah. It can be figured out.

Hopefully it does on the DL at least or next season basically over before it starts. Hopefully many learnings resulting from this cycle for the people who matter at ND.

They're egos are what gets in the way with new players being brought in if they're making more money. depending on who it is I can't say I wouldn't be pissed if I found out somebody was getting paid that I knew I was better than. Happened when I was in college and found out dudes were getting more in scholarship money.

Would we rather they potentially maybe have a pissed player, or another year of the whole team being gutted because we went 12-0 against the weakest schedule in ND history but OSU ran for 289 yards to an easy round 1 win and Marcus Freeman says “enough”?

I remember the last time the staff valued player’s feelings over making the roster better. It resulted in a Tyler Buchner and Drew Pyne QB battle.

The defense is going to give up 200 ypg on the ground, but at least everyone will be happy.
You're predicting that ND's running defense will go from #10 to #125?

I understand it's frustrating to not have landed an impact DT in the transfer portal, but the rest of the team and the coaching staff is too good to fall off that badly.

If the interior DL can’t hold up, it’s going to have a trickle down effect. The OL will be able to easily get to the linebackers and wash them out. Traore will almost never get 1v1 opportunities because there’s no one else on the DL that scares you.

Two things:

  1. So far, reports are that money has NOT been the issue for the guys we've missed on. In some cases, we've offered the most and the players have still chosen to go elsewhere.
  2. In the example IIO gave, he was talking about a player of equal value to players already on the roster. It would be really dumb to significantly overpay for a player of equal value, because if ND is willing to do that, why wouldn't the current DT's on the roster conclude that, obviously, they could find a team willing to overpay for them too, and then jump into the portal unless ND matches whatever they are paying the portal player?

I agree with #2

I guess Russaw and Smith go way back as they were teammates in High School as well.
