It’s the ME vs WE syndrome.
He already has a ND degree. From the outside looking in, it appears he has done everything the program and university asked him to do. He’s put himself in a position to earn more money right now - my guess is quite a bit more - while also increasing his ability to get drafted. ND just has less reps to offer, and chose to commit resources to players they believe are better.
My opinion on the portal and NIL is not very fashionable - I hate it - but if my own son was in Burnham's position, my advice would be to make the decision that benefits the name on the back of the jersey, not the front. In other words, I’d encourage him to do exactly what programs and teams are already doing - act in their own self-interest. I’d rather acknowledge the system as it exists than pretend we’re operating under some set of principles that no longer applies.
Im sure you disagree, but Im equally sure that view would change quickly if this were your own son staring at a chance to make life changing money and better position himself to fulfill his career aspirations, after already walking away with a ND degree.
