I'm not shocked he got fired... I'm exhilarated... His mouth - as usual - wrote a check his ass couldn't cash... Fuck him...

What is the big knock on Rhule? Sure he got fired at Carolina but the NFL is a different world when it comes to coaching. He was good at Temple and Baylor and seems to have Nebraska moving in the right direction.
The big knock on Franklin is not winning the "big game."

Rhule has an even worse record against ranked teams.

Assuming they had the conversations about sourcing the money for the buyout (Terry Pegula has that in his couch cushions, as an example), I don't know that there was much choice but to fire him to be blunt. He's had 12 years to show he can win a big game, and he hasn't done it. Couple that with the last two weeks and every home game he remains the head coach becomes a likely source of embarrassment where the team gets booed coming out of the tunnel just because he's there with them.

Can't wait to watch James Franklin's Bowling Green next year. Shame they won't be able to beat Ohio or Toledo
Lost in the shuffle, but as a former Glass City resident I hate that Toledo-BGSU was played this weekend. Why do we call it a rivalry?

The one argument that you might be able to make in Rhule's defense is that Franklin's teams had more talent than Rhule's.

Personally, I think it would be lazy of them to hire him just because he is a Penn St. guy and friends with the AD. But, I don't think it would be a "bad" hire. He'd probably be about the same as Franklin.

I want them to make a bad hire that sets them back for 5-7 years if not longer.

Penn State wishes they were more like Clemson. Clemson has more national titles, 18 more ACC titles over Penn State's 4 B1G titles. Clemson's been to the playoff more than once, Penn State's only trip was two easy teams before they faced us. Penn State hasn't won a national title since the year I was born, and I'm 43, so most college football fans are too young to remember or they weren't born yet.

I think it's a bit different though. Penn State was anointed at the beginning of the season as the heavy favorite to win it all, this was going to be the year they had everything and James was going to get his flowers. They had the big time QB (Not really), they had one of the best DC's in Knowles, they had the talent around them, etc. Here's hoping James gets fired and Penn State tanks.
- I'm not getting the Penn St:Clemson similarity. Historically they had medium to weak schedules?

- I don't understand how any coach can avoid a bad year in the age of NIL instant roster turnover.

Is Knowles the interim?
"Penn State football cornerbacks coach, defensive recruiting coordinator, and associate head coach Terry Smith has been named the interim head coach following James Franklin’s firing on Sunday, Penn State Athletics announced."

I don’t doubt Rhule is a good coach. I doubt he can raise the talent level to a point where he’s exceeding Franklin’s results. Hasn’t been crushing it in the portal or recruiting at Nebraska (Raiola was a one off with a connection). Not convinced he’s the type of guy you write a $50M buyout check for.

Haven’t seen proof of life since the announcement of his firing
Lol, this motherfucker just won the lottery. We could all be so lucky to get fired and make $49m for the next 6/7.

We make fun of him and laugh, but he will literally make waaay more than 99.99% of us. For doing nothing.

Something had to go down for them to fire him mid year like this. I get the optics, I suppose with their QB situation, it keeps the situation less toxic for the players. But its so strange to fire him after 3 losses given all what he was able to bring the school. Im not defending him either, just the timing of it all seems suspect. Probably tried to get him to resign and he refused. Only thing I can think of.

I think yesterday sealed his fate.

At that point, you might as well fire him now, if for no other reason than to avoid the toxic environment at home games the rest of the season.

He had $50 million reasons not to quit. The situation was just going to get worse.

I'm genuinely asking here as I haven't watched a Nebraska game other than their game against Cincy, is Raiola even that good? I was not too impressed with him against the Bearcats.

I watched him against Michigan and was hoping that he’d help them pull the upset. I felt he played well and kept them in the game. He has a cannon for sure! Here’s what AI thinks… take it for what it’s worth. He does have good #s. Excuse my typos in advance😉

Yes, Dylan Raiola is considered a very good and promising quarterback, with current analysis highlighting his strong statistical season for Nebraska, including leading the Big Ten in passing yards, touchdowns, and completion percentage. Despite his strong performance, there is debate and disagreement regarding his overall ranking among power conference quarterbacks, with some media figures advocating for a higher position

He reminds me of Allar in the sense that they are both talented and cocky as hell but something is missing.

There's also the whole Mahomes cosplay which is immensely off putting. Allar is a good comp though because there's a lot of hype around him but he didn't pass the eye test imo.

I haven't watched either, but he's 16th in pass efficiency and has a negative YPC for the second year in a row.

Rhule is 2 - 22 against ranked opponents. You would basically be hiring Franklin again in some sense.
Yes but he wasn’t competing with the same talent Franklin has.

In the 25 years for JoePa following his 1986 title, PSU won only 69% of their games, basically a 9-4 average record, a significant drop off from JoePa’s first 20 years where he had a 79% win % and 2 titles.

I just don’t know what these fans expect. They aren’t a blue blood, and only have 2 titles. The 2022-2024 run (as well as OSU’s seemingly endless run) has totally distorted what expectations should be.

Which might make his record against ranked opponents improve, but against top 5 or top 10 opponents where the talent is equal, I'm not sure. I've never been overly impressed with Rhule. He lacks a big time feel to me.
