I mentioned it in the ND Talking Heads thread recently, but the shit talk from Penn State fans is not going away anytime soon. For weeks they've been salty about ND and the bowl game, and it hasn't gotten any better with recruiting mixed in. These were just some of the latest threads I saw today, these aren't even the ones PSU started, but some of the comments are entertaining lol.

Series was really lit back in the late 80's early 90's Holtz vs Paterno. Think we lost a few more than we won.

We were tied all time, right down the middle, until the latest bowl game. We now have a winning record against all B1G teams besides OSU and Michigan, and Michigan only has the edge because of the leather helmet era when most teams weren't really organized yet. Michigan also dodged us during some of our best eras like the 20s, most of the 40s, the 60s, and most of the 70s.

If anyone follows college hockey, Penn State is completely splurging in hockey. Might land the future #1 draft pick. That is not nothing type NIL. Did JF get some of his funds taken away till he wins a Top 10 game?

That's one more big game for Franklin to lose every year. They'll never say yes.

State College is very scenic compared to South Bend. The one advantage they have for any recruit who grew up in a flat area.

Penn State is a hockey school from now on.

Honestly idk if you can even count it as the leather helmet era, it was more like the late 1800s, probably before there were even helmets being worn. Once we finally beat those punks, they stopped playing us in the 1900s. Then Fielding Yost got scared of Knute, and they took another long hiatus.

Oh, they are....
I had a good feeling about Bielema at Illinois. Seemed like a solid fit at the time and last year was one of the best season's they've had in a long time. Kind of fun having Illinois punching above their weight in that conference, we'll see how long they can ride this wave.

PSU seems like a whiny fanbase. We beat them fair and square in the semi-final. Looking forward to locking up these recruitments in their backyard.

Illinois is never going to be tOSU, scUM or PSU. I do think they could put together a run like Iowa and Wisconsin, however. There is absolutely zero reason they can't consistently go to bowl games and be competitive, even in this era. It's one of the best public universities in America and they have geographic range to pull players from.

The have 23 commits right now. 8 from IL, 7 from FL.

Bielema laid ground work with Illinois HS football coaches as soon as he was hired. One of the first things he did, in fact. So much of that got lost after Zook left and wasn't there before Zook got there either.

I went to a state directional school and actually cared about sports. Growing up an ND fan prior to that, I never really cared about U of I. Having seen Wisconsin, Iowa and Purdue under Tiller have football success kind of sucks as a resident of the state, admittedly. Hell, Northwestern has probably outperformed them as a program for the last couple of decades. Even when they had some success, It was Zook doing it at the expense of Weis and ND because he was beating them to key targets.

Not a fan of Penn State at all. I used to admire Paterno from afar and was pretty neutral toward them. I think it's cultish

Imagine being so delusional that you think Franklin has a better personality than Marcus Freeman

Without naming names, I know a few people who've gone through the recruiting process with both Vanderbilt and PSU, and they say, without a doubt, that Franklin is the biggest, whiniest POS on this green planet.

I know there was an article that came out awhile back that said "Franklin cries more than any other coach about negative recruiting, but it's a tactic he relies on extensively" and their experience confirmed that to be the case.

Edit: found the article! James Franklin makes two-fold mess by talking ‘negative recruiting’ | Sporting News

This tweet is what captures what a POS he is:

That's amazing insight. What a hypocritical POS.

Remember when he had that creepy quote about how he wouldn’t hire an assistant if they didn’t have a hot wife because it was evidence that they weren’t a good salesman and therefore couldn’t recruit? Bro’s wife must be fugly as hel!!!

I’m not sure, no. But I certainly choose to believe it as it seems very on brand for that walking thumb.

AI Overview

The most prominent college football coach to have referenced wives in the context of recruiting and hiring is
James Franklin.
James Franklin made comments regarding evaluating assistant coaches based on the appearance of their wives in relation to recruiting ability. These comments were made in 2012 while he was the head coach at Vanderbilt. Franklin later apologized for these remarks, stating that they did not reflect his views on women.
Lane Kiffin also made similar comments in 2018 regarding evaluating assistant coaches' wives to judge their recruiting skills.
These comments were met with backlash and were viewed by many as sexist and objectifying. The idea that a coach's wife's appearance correlates to their recruiting ability is seen as a flawed and potentially offensive concept.

Nick Shepkowski's Quick Takeaway:

With as much talking as Penn State head coach James Franklin likes to do about Notre Dame whenever he's given the chance, it's extra sweet to see another prized recruit from his backyard end up with the Fighting Irish.

If you think Franklin and Penn State backers are upset now, just wait and see if five-star safety Joey O'Brien, also of Pennsylvania, potentially picks Notre Dame when he announces his college commitment on Friday.
