I don’t know anything about him personally but Texas Tech is an intriguing program to raid on the player personnel side.

Kind of interesting hire. The II guys were saying how the GM might be more of an NIL/money focused person and less of a recruiting type, but he seems to be squarely in the recruiting type, though with the added benefit over Bowden of a scouting background.

“The two things that stick out to me for James Blanchard — one is an eye for talent, how he evaluates, but [also] the way he connects and builds relationships at the same time,” McGuire said, according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal back in 2022. “… I’ve seen a lot of evaluators and they have personalities of cardboard. I’ve seen guys that are not great evaluators but are phenomenal at creating relationships. That dude has it all.”

My guess is they’ll position NIL fundraising at an AD or Asst AD level, while allowing the GM to focus on talent acquisition and development.

Hard to tell how he will turn out compared to Bowden until he has a little time in the position, but this does look to be a positive move. Particularly since he has ties in Texas.

Idk anything about him and won’t pretend to, but I did pay a lot of attention to what Texas Tech was doing on the trail the last couple cycles and there’s a lot to love, especially with how they locked down Texas for high schoolers. Thought most of it was driven by Joey Maguire, but obviously this guy played a huge role. Great portal class incoming and they got their first 5 star (albeit a bust so far).
