The issue is that many/most ND fans (some of whom will sell their tickets to IU fans) don't have their tickets yet. When they see that a ticket with face value of $150 (or whatever) is worth $1,000, what will happen?

I would think there would be a lot more diehard ND fans willing to pony up huge dollars for tickets as oppossed to diehard IU fans, if there is such a thing.

Lots of sudden IU football fans who are excited about what is happening, but are they diehard enough to pony up $1,000?

A lot easier to do that from the comfort of your own bed than if you needed a flight and hotel to boot. Most ND fans need those flights and hotels and might rather book time in New Orleans, ergo ipso facto - don't get an ulcer when the stadium looks a bit red.

yeah - not a lot of people even know if they have a ticket to sell yet. Visiting team gets 3500 tickets with minimum 1500 lower bowl and up to 500 for a band according to my quick search. Season tickets are probably the only ones who know right now.

The economics of this are kind of fascinating.

There surely are more diehard ND fans willing to pay up than there are IU fans. But some will save their bullets for the second round, which will be easier to make the travel work, being three weeks away in a much larger city with more hotel rooms and flights. It is also a holiday week whereas this game will take place on what is a workday for most people.

Meantime, for Indiana fans this is a once-in-a-lifetime sort of event, and many won't even need hotel rooms or airbnbs (which have soared in price) because they live close enough to drive, which is not the case for most of ND's fan base. There may be far more ND fans nationally, but there are probably more IU alums who live within, say, a three hour drive, just given the size of the schools.

As for ticket prices, they will go down in price starting tomorrow when tens of thousands of alums get tickets in the lottery, some of which they will not be able to use. But how much?

Some enterprising economics grad student should study this closely.

I had hotels booked in South Bend, New Orleans, Glendale (AZ), Glendale (CA), Atlanta, Miami, Dallas, and Atlanta again but flights might be the thing that keep me out. They're brutal and getting worse.

Season tickets were able to guarantee their season seats but they could also enter the lottery for more, and they're sitting around waiting on the results like the rest of us.

SP+ is down on us more than essentially any other index FWIW. They are one of the only ones I’ve seen where we aren’t top 5.
