Nobody probably cares, but whoever was doing down and distance for the stadium scoreboard deserves to be fired. Consistently wrong by a lot. Like not even remotely close. At one point I assumed that they must’ve been having their 2nd grade son take a shot at running things.

Forgetting about the piss poor job by the refs, I was impressed with how much the Oline has improved since the start of the season. Still room for improvement, but running the ball late in the year leads to success.
They’ve been awesome. Besides yesterday, when can you recall a penalty by an OL stalling a drive or negating a big play? The tackle play has been really pretty terrific and the guards have sorted themselves out. Rudolph deserves his roses for getting this group into this type of form.

It seemed like more yesterday, so I checked.

OL had 3 penalties, Coogan holding (1st play of drive, nullified 5 yd gain), Coogan PF/illegal hands to the face, Wagner PF/illegal hands to the face (1st play of drive, incomplete pass).

Coogan's PF nullified Harrison's 78 yd TD

They really need to adjudicate “hands to the face” by linemen the same way they do a “facemask.” There is a difference between your hands sliding up under the helmet while engaged in a block and grasping and grabbing the facemask. If a ballcarrier or defender doesn’t grasp the facemask, it isn’t a penalty. So should be the case for OL/DL.

Yep, agree. Coogan grabbed and held on, so he'd still have nullified the td, tho. I don't recall a replay of Wagner's.

The other hands to the face happened late 4Q by a walk-on DL.

Is Jayden Harrison the most reliable receiver for ND?

I was worried about Hinish defending the run but he really excelled in both pass & run D

The one thing UVA did successfully was shut down RL run game

I realize UVA scored one TD after refs failed to review obvious incomplete pass & another vs ND’s backups but still weird they outscored ND in the 2H after ND shut them out in the 1H 28-0.

I would say he is right there with Greathouse.

I realize he hasn’t had the # of touches as Greathouse but I can’t recall any blatant drops either. In fact, he’s usually had to leave his feet to secure the pass. I love Greathouse but he and the rest of the WR corps have had some inexcusable drops. I know we all get frustrated w/ RL’s passing acumen but the WR corps bears some blame, too.

Thats probably why Collins was in the portal. And we are failing at WR under MF’s watch. He needs to go hire a stud coach to fix that room.

I’ve noticed a significant change in MFMF in interviews and interactions since NIU. I now call him Darkus Freeman and I’m here for the new attitude.
He has certainly appeared a bit more business like in his responses with the media. He has a very “nice guy” image and I think it is sincere but some on the outside would equate that to weakness. I don’t think he is weak whatsoever but the more business like approach with the media is in response to that, IMO.

Idk if it was clear on TV or not, but on the fake punt, the ref threw the flag AFTER Faison juked the dude in the open field. Like he was standing at the line either figuring ND MUST have done something illegal, or the fix was in and he threw the flag so they could huddle and figure something out.

Watching the official “huddle” as they discussed, I would bet my life savings that the white hat was just giving the ACC booth time to come up with something and was waiting for advisement in his ear piece. I know there is a “deception” penalty they can throw on special teams trick plays, and it’s related to hiding a guy on the sideline during substitutions, so all players are supposed to be visible between the numbers when getting into formation, I thought for sure they were going to misapply that one and then apologize to ND later

It was a very strange look and the announcers commented that the flag came in very late. There was quite a bit of confusion in the booth and the penalty reasoning was explained by the replay stand by dude (can’t remember his name). IIRC, he said it was a penalty because of the numbers on the jerseys of the fellas on the line didn’t comply with the rules. I’ve never seen a penalty like that in my lifetime…….

Coogan unnecessarily grabbed the DL facemask and held it for a couple of seconds. Didn’t need to but hard to argue with that one. The other two were BS and ticky tack. ACC officials coming under attack across the conference yesterday.

So what's the solution? I'd prefer to keep working on it, especially considering there could still be two months left in the season. You think we should just give up and put Angeli out there?

Leonard won't be a consistent passer by the end of the season, but he's not going to improve by standing on the sideline
He was 22-33 with one sneaky int and a couple of TDs. At least 3 passes were dropped plus one pass of beauty that was called back but it showed his improvement. He should have been able to make a better touch pass for the TD.

I agree with others who've stated RL more elaborate running plays are withheld for closer games.

On the fake punt.......

I had no idea there was a rule pertaining to the numbers worn on the line of scrimmage. You can see Freeman saying we went over the play during the meeting. What is the obligation of the refs in these meetings? Did Freeman go over the formation and was not aware of the numbers needed to be worn on the line? Do the officials need to point that out in the meeting when saying a play is legal?

At halftime, the DB on the panel said the numbers on the line would not have helped him discern the play and thought the rule was stupid.

Overall, the offense was sloppy. I figured in the 2nd half they just got lackadaisical due to the score so I was hoping Freeman, and the staff would have hammered home a more disciplined vibe.

The defense played awesome, and I can't believe how well the freshmen are playing and did not expect this much of a contribution. I would think that bodes well for recruiting when the kids see freshmen doing their thing.

His interviews seem less "I'm just happy to be here" than before.

And this will seem dumb because he is well-compensated and coaching ND is unique among college FB positions, but I hope it didn't break him. Like, it seems like he's learned a hard lesson, but I hope he isn't bitter about it, either. Really don't want BK v.2 where everything about trying to win a football game is antagonistic.

I'm prob making too much of it.
