The reports on Minchey are that he has high level arm talent and is a gun slinger who will grip it and rip it downfield......both good and bad. Needs to take the next step with the play book, needs to become more of a vocal leader, etc, etc. Angeli is a perfectly competent, solid QB. Just is very likely not to be at ND.

I've been critical of Sneed in the past due to his play. So much of that seemed like a lack of instincts and fundamental linebacker play. Now hearing from the coaches and the young man himself this spring make me hopeful the light bulb has turned on. About the halfway point of this vid, he even references that point.

I was at the point with Sneed where i was writing him off as a likely transfer. Now i want to see more...

Tbf he was never coached to be a linebacker in his HS. He had to learn the game at ND

Linebacker is tough to learn. We've been spoiled with some guys who were ready right away, but like offensive line and QB it's something most guys have to get used to the game speed while being able to process faster than anyone else on the field. It would have been great if Sneed was capable from day 1, but it's not weird or concerning that he wasn't imo.

One could argue that it is more important for the LB over the QB. The QB knows what play is called and can see the D pre-snap. LB doesn't know if it's a pass or run, let alone which side of the field the play is going. I'm excited to see what kind of havoc he can create.

Agree except who was really ready right away other than Manti and Jaylon (generational talents)?

I think NDs issue is we have landed so many top players at their positions we just expect them to be better than those infront of them right when they step on campus. Example - Sneed was ranked high not because of his ability to play LB but his physical abilities that could allow him to develop into a great LB. KVA is different where he knows how to play the position walking in the door. Seems we are landing one every 10 years or so.

It took JD 3 years to start playing descent. Morgan, Coney, etc all take time at LB.

Jaylon arguably didn't learn linebacker either, at least not right away. He was a freak talent that could just react and had the speed to chase people down. That's one reason Joe Schmidt was the QB of that defense in 2015, they needed someone that could get people aligned right and know the system inside and out. It plays into the whole thing with Morgan and Coney too, both were great athletes that had to learn the position. Manti was the one that had the physical tools and the understanding to run the show.

Coney was not a "great athlete"

Otherwise he would have been drafted and/or played in the NFL

He was extremely productive but not some great athlete that "just had to learn the position"

Although like 99% of all players he did also need time to learn the position before becoming very good

They're just the usual Spring feel good sound bytes

I'd be more inclined to agree with your initial impressions of Sneed

If he actually could put it together upstairs there'd be JOK type vibes around him because he's that type of athlete

We'll see what comes out about him during Fall camp--but he wouldn't be the first guy that just couldn't get it and he won't be the last

That's why you have to recruit/sign a large quantity of athletes year after year. Not just every few years or so

313 tackles in his career, 7 sacks, 1 INTs, couple fumble recoveries. Not a good enough athlete to get drafted in the NFL, but he was a pretty good linebacker in college his last two years..

QB and OL are really what I have been most interested in tracking this spring. Literal big shoes to fill there.

If Carr can win the second job that’s a home run but what worries me is Leonard is injury prone. Ideal situation Leonard stays healthy and Carr gets plenty of snaps this year and takes over next year. With 3 years left of egilibity. If that happens Angeli and Minchey most likely transfer so ND would most likely need to bring in a transfer after this year for depth.

Great summary. If you don’t have 14 minutes here are some key points:

- defense won overall. Offense turned it up late but was hurt by pick-6s
- CJ Carr was the best qb. He didn’t go against the 1s, but he throws the best ball and just looks different out there (somebody please let On3 know about that)
- pick 6s were from Watts (ball hawk) and Mickey. Shuler also had an interception on the last play. Angeli threw 2 of those. Minchey 1 and Carr 0
- offensive line struggled. Tackles especially. Pendleton had a rough go as backup center snapping the ball. Coogan leading for left guard
- edge rushers looked good. Prister said Traore is big time
- greathouse looks like a number 1 receiver, cam Williams also played well with 2s and 3s - cj was throwing to him
- Raridon played and looked good
- love is playing all over the field. Not just at slot
- only 12 personnel was in goal line
- jeter missed a field goal hitting the upright
- Jayden Thomas hurt with hamstring, Jayden Harrison out with plantar fasciitis. Tyson ford stepped away for personal reasons

I hate losing any of these guys, but Carr already being good enough to be number 2 is probably the best case scenario.
I'd still name Steve number 2 because we NEED three quarterbacks on the roster. Naming Carr might cause them both to transfer out.

CJ and Steve can battle head to head in 2025 and Steve might still stay if he loses since he'd be so close to the degree.

Unfortunately if CJ is that good this early it might cause Duece to look elsewhere or refuse to sit 2-3 years of this chance.
Good problems to have though.

O line is super concerning. Wish we could buy a front line left tackle in the transfer window and bump Jagusah into left guard and go from passable to good O line. That could be the difference between playoffs or not or winning a playoff game or not. How O line U ended up in this situation when most of the recruits were highly rated is beyond me.
