Okay, this might seem to be a boring poll, but I guess I'm just most interested in seeing how many protestants there are in our fan-base---at least in the one represented on this site.

My cousins are presbyterians and are the biggest ND fans in the world.

I'm Quaker...

Catholicism is a part of the school...it's not a part of the team.

Now, for those of us who attended ND and knew very little about Catholicism, it was quite an eye opener. The Priests at ND were amazing men, I have so much respect for them, they were kind and always great to talk to and learn from.

Being Quaker, I am about as far from Catholicism as you can get in many ways. We don't have the ceremonies, the pomp and pagentry, the grandiose nature of the Catholic Churches, etc. Heck, we don't have ministers/priests/pastors (whatever you want to call them).

However, ND is fundamentally a Catholic school and I had a great time there and never felt like an outsider per se. But it was clear that I did not quite fit the mold. Especially on Ash Wednesday, when a buddy of mine had a spot of ashes on his forehead... (which I had never seen before)...and I said "Dude, you have some dirt or something on your head."

hahahaha...he looked at me for a second like I was crazy, but then he realized and he explained...

Not to make fun of another religion but the incident to me was amusing and does raise the issue of differences. I have had much theology up through college.

While at work once, a discussion with a new friend and I turned to religion. He belonged to some sect called "Holy." He stated "I am Holy, are you Holy?" Now I have had 2 years of Catholic ministry formation and could only reply. "Well, I don't particulary think I'm very Holy, and might even go to hell for all I know. Plus that it must be wonderful to automaticly know that one is heaven bound." You see, that word has a different meaning to me and mine.

Well, this sat him off on a tirade of how I should be Holy, and he and his church had it made for heaven being Holy and my catholci church not being Holy.

I could only reply as human beings we try to be holy but often fall short in order to extricate my self from that converstaion which went in circles.

Well, only one being is truly "holy" and "perfect" right?

We are just men, we try as best we can...

Imagine the inefficiency of a census effort that required everyone to return to their ancestral home to be counted. Just mass chaos and society grinding to a halt as travel makes modern holiday flying look like a breeze. An absolute economic calamity. Which is why it didn't happen.

Imagine the audacity of living 2000+ years after said time period, applying modern thinking to an ancient issue and telling everyone, "that's why it didn't happen".

I have plenty of doubts about plenty of things. I never feel comfortable stating things definitely. Does it feel smug to post like this? Or are you so convinced of your understanding, it just feels like your helping educate people about the fallacies of faith?

Why it didn't happen is more simple than that... Romans wanted to tax people locally, not based on where they were born.
Here's a really cool piece on that topic.

I follow Jesus. I was raised Catholic, but am chary about the Nicene Creed.

Jesus is the Way the Truth and the Life.
The Church is a tool to use to help me. It is to serve me, not I it.

I trust Jesus.

And to the Quaker friend above??/ Hello, brother Christian, it is arguable that many of the Quaker tenets are closer to the actual teaching of Jesus than modern Catholicism.

Oh, and I avoid talking about Jesus as if he were not in the room. He always is........

to bayernarsch? I applaud your questioning and hope you enjoy the Q'uuran. At the end of the day, whether you read about the Ahura Mazda, the Gospels, the Gita, the Tao Te Ching or your perfect book, the answer is always the same, isn't it? God is simply bigger.

Well, I learned a new word today.

Out of curiosity, what makes you chary of the Nicene Creed? It's used in other Christian denominations, correct (Episcopalian, Orthodox, Lutheran)?

At the end of the day, the denominations really aren't that important to me. The beliefs may vary some and others may have more liturgy than others, but in Christianity, I suppose we're all on the same team, maybe with just different functions and purposes (like a baseball team: pitcher, cathcher, first baseman, center fielder, etc).
